19.01.2022 Some members of our community may find this new support page helpful. Sent in by one of our followers: "Hi, Im not sure if this is allowed, but I wanted to let you guys know about a group that has formed on Facebook that is proving really helpful for guys that are suffering mental health issues, often stemming from custody battles or anxiety over life and relationships. https://www.facebook.com/groups/VicroianBrotherhood/?ref=share... This is a male only group, designed to have a support network for blokes that want someone to talk to, vent to, or get advice from. I am not an admin of the group, nor can I take credit for its founding. I can, however, speak volumes for the help I see it providing guys in the community."

16.01.2022 For the first time we've seen, 1800-RESPECT is advertising their service as "for women AND MEN". Pity it's based on the Duluth Model, so male victims will probably be assumed to be the perpetrator. We would love to hear from any male victims who have called 1800-RESPECT for assistance. Were they helpful?
16.01.2022 Researchers at Griffith University are conducting an online survey to understand how people handle conflict with their partners. It should take about 10 to 15 minutes. Please take the survey if you have the time. Thank you! https://prodsurvey.rcs.griffith.edu.au/pr/index.php/427967
15.01.2022 Another sexist, one-sided inquiry into domestic violence. On 4 June 2020, the House Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs adopted an inquiry into family, domestic and sexual violence. The inquiry was referred by the Minister for Women, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, and the Minister for Families and Social Services, Senator the Hon Anne Ruston. Submissions close: Friday, 24 July 2020... Terms of Reference are as follows, almost all of which exclude male victims and female perpetrators: That the Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs inquire into and report on family, domestic and sexual violence, including with a view to informing the next National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children, the following: a) Immediate and long-term measures to prevent violence against women and their children, and improve gender equality. b) Best practice and lessons learnt from international experience, ranging from prevention to early intervention and response, that could be considered in an Australian context. c) The level and impact of coordination, accountability for, and access to services and policy responses across the Commonwealth, state and territory governments, local governments, non government and community organisations, and business. d) The way that health, housing, access to services, including legal services, and womens economic independence impact on the ability of women to escape domestic violence. e) All forms of violence against women, including, but not limited to, coercive control and technology-facilitated abuse. f) The adequacy of the qualitative and quantitative evidence base around the prevalence of domestic and family violence and how to overcome limitations in the collection of nationally consistent and timely qualitative and quantitative data including, but not limited to, court, police, hospitalisation and housing. g) The efficacy of perpetrator intervention programs and support services for men to help them change their behaviour. h) The experiences of all women, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, rural women, culturally and linguistically diverse women, LGBTQI women, women with a disability, and women on temporary visas. i) The impact of natural disasters and other significant events such as COVID-19, including health requirements such as staying at home, on the prevalence of domestic violence and provision of support services. j) The views and experiences of frontline services, advocacy groups and others throughout this unprecedented time. k) An audit of previous parliamentary reviews focussed on domestic and family violence. l) Any other related matters. Despite the regressive and bigoted nature of this inquiry, we still urge as many people as possible to lodge submissions. We have strength in numbers. If we don't take part, it will be yet another whitewash. https://www.aph.gov.au//Social_Policy_and_L/Familyviolence

14.01.2022 Progress or propaganda from the NSW government? One in Three has consistently called on state and federal governments to introduce services and support for all victims of family violence, rather than continuing with their long-standing policy of supporting women only, with token support for men. I visited my GP today and saw this poster on the wall. I was intrigued by the gender-neutral language used. Going to the website listed on the poster (https://www.speakout.dcj.nsw.gov....au), once again the language was gender-neutral (though all the images were female). Could it be the case that the NSW Government was finally providing support to all victims, regardless of gender? My excitement was short lived. Going to the website for the NSW Domestic Violence Line (https://www.facs.nsw.gov.au/domestic-violence/helpline), I discovered that the line was still only available to women experiencing domestic and family violence. Male victims are referred to the two national telephone support lines (Mensline and 1800 RESPECT) that subscribe to the "risk assessment framework" that presumes men who call claiming to be victims are actually perpetrators. Is it progress or propaganda that the NSW Government's latest campaign uses gender neutral language? On the one hand, using inclusive language is helpful in educating the public that family violence can affect anyone, regardless of gender. On the other hand, men who call the number on the poster are going to hit an immediate wall when they are told, "sorry this line is for women only". Perhaps the poster should be re-worded as follows? SPEAK OUT If you are a woman, we will listen to you, believe you, and help you. If you are a man, we will refer you elsewhere where they will listen to you, question you, possibly believe you, possibly decide you are a perpetrator, and probably not help you as there are few services available to refer you to.

12.01.2022 Another sickening example of the double-standard when it comes to gender and family violence. If women think it's harmless (and funny) to do this to their partners, they may well think its harmless to use other forms of family violence. If the genders were reversed there would be outrage. https://www.facebook.com/linda.pisani.9/videos/10158195028498006/

06.01.2022 We have lost count of the number of male victims of family violence who have contacted us with stories of police misconduct and/or abuse of judicial process. They are falsely arrested and removed from their homes because of the assumption that because they are male, they must be a perpetrator and not a victim. When this happens, children can be left unprotected from the perpetrator of the violence, leading many men to suffer the abuse in silence in an attempt to protect their... children. Police can laugh at male victims, tell them to go home and "man up", ask what they did to cause their partner to hit them, or ask them why they weren't able to protect themselves. Police are also at times complicit in legal-administrative abuse: the use of legitimate services in a way that abuses the rights of others, for example, taking out a false restraining order to prevent a father having access to his children. If you are a victim of police misconduct and/or abuse of judicial process, please use the appropriate link below to make a complaint. If possible identify yourself rather than making an anonymous complaint as it adds credibility. Make sure you detail all the alleged conduct, including who was involved, what occurred, where and when. If you can include supporting documentation it will be advantageous and will minimise delays in decision making. Insist upon the public interest nature of your issues, as this is the major criterion they use to determine whether to take your case. Three days after making your complaint, telephone the agency to ask for feedback. We need to start weeding out the bad eggs.

04.01.2022 A woman refuses to leave a man's house, yelling and screaming at him then ripping his screen door off its hinges. Another man is grabbed by the genitals and squeezed hard. Both retaliate against this domestic violence, and it's all THEIR fault. Their partner's behaviour is absolutely fine, apparently. Appalling reporting by the ABC as usual. To be clear, the men's use of retaliatory violence isn't justified, but surely BOTH parties are at fault as both used DV. https://www.abc.net.au//reinvest-trial-men-domes/12988544
04.01.2022 We are looking to hear from any male victims of family violence who have used the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) in Canberra/ACT recently. It has just been brought to our attention that the DVCS has opened their 24/7 Crisis Intervention and Legal Support & Advocacy services to persons of both sexes, which is great to see. We would like to add these services to our website, however we hesitate to recommend them until we have heard from any males who have used them. Th...ey may well question men's victim status and assume they are perpetrators, as other such services are trained to do. If you have had recent experience with the DVCS or know of anyone who has, please let us know. Thank you! https://dvcs.org.au/our-services/crisis-intervention/

01.01.2022 Ever wondered why the ABC's coverage of family and domestic violence is so biased? Here's an excerpt from their Editorial Policy on DV. "Research the facts, consider the weight of evidence and avoid false balance. An example is the one in three figure which is sometimes quoted to suggest one in three victims of domestic violence are men. This figure, derived from the ABS data, can be seriously misleading if not presented in context and with qualification." https://edpols.ab...c.net.au/guidance/domestic-violence/ We have had all the ABS statistics in our latest infographic fact-checked and verified by the ABS. There is nothing misleading about them. http://oneinthree.com.au/infographic
