07.01.2022 Competition Winner Update!! Well, it's taken us a few weeks to drag @sunshine_sal out of the waves around #lordhoweisland ...but we finally tracked her down! We're SOOO stoked that Sal won our Intermediate Watermanship Programme prize- what an absolute ocean-loving legend! We caught up with Sal for a chat and she told us her story (below). Read on for some real inspiration! ... Surfer, free-diver, diver, marine ecologist, conservationist, ocean lover and grateful mummathat's me! The ocean and nature have always been my greatest inspiration and when I had my first free dive/snorkel on the outer Great Barrier Reef at the age of 7, I knew that I wanted to spend a life on, under and near the ocean. I have spent all of my adult life dedicated to caring for, learning, exploring and conserving the Planet Ocean we live on. I’ve been lucky enough to have spent over 25 years living and working and undertaking marine conservation and research on some of the most beautiful island and coasts the planet has to offer...AND I'm still super-passionate about caring for our oceans and it’s creatures. I am always salty and searching...for how to be the best person possible, searching for ways to live more sustainably and searching for ways to give as much as I can to caring for the oceans...oh yes, and always searching for waves to surf! It is the ocean and especially surfing, that fuels my soul and for me, surfing is the ultimate expression of oneness with the Ocean and the ultimate way to recharge and reconnect. My heart is filled when I see this same love and passion for the ocean in my son, Kai who is an energetic 8 year old who loves surfing, snorkelling, swimming and skateboarding and shares the same the love of the ocean, its creatures, waves, and all of life. Together on Lord Howe Island, we both feel deeply grateful for being able to live and breathe the magic of this World Heritage paradise and feel honoured to help care for its pristine marine park. My vision is for more people to awaken, realise the interconnectedness of all things and to conserve and protect this amazing Planet Ocean that we are lucky enough to call home. See more
