25.01.2022 I just thought I would share this wonderful feedback that I received today from a happy mum. Please spread the word to anybody else who might be struggling with their "ones and twos" issues.... "Can I just say your service and the outcomes that it has achieved for our son have been a blessing. We have not had a single accident since our last appointment with you. Amazing! He has yet to poo outside of our house but we are hopeful with his new found confidence that this will come. He has no fear around the toilet and is matter of fact now about the event. We cannot thank you enough for your assistance and we have passed on your details to our childcare centre for any other children requiring assistance. Thank you so much!"

25.01.2022 Now is the time to get proactive with making sure your child is toilet trained before school next year! Please book an appointment ASAP to let me help you with this! https://www.couriermail.com.au//67d3f855a75f27703c24ed9141

24.01.2022 As a result of the increasing demand again for my services this week, I am now available for consultations on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursday at Clayfield only. Please contact the receptionist (ph 07 3152 8266) to arrange Monday appointments as these are currently not yet available online. I have been particularly impressed this week by a number of new families who are getting their childrens issues sorted now so that they are ready for Prep next year. Please dont leave it until too late to sort this out as I will be not taking any new clients during the Xmas school holidays!

24.01.2022 Due to the recent changes and restrictions that are in place as a result of the Coronavirus, I am now offering phone consultations as an alternative to appointments in person. I anticipate there will also be some opportunity to do some videoconferencing in the near future and am currently researching the best options for this. However it is highly advantageous for me to meet you and your child in person in the initial consultation, so I would encourage you to try and come int...o the clinic if everyone is asymptomatic. I have also recently experienced a reduction in numbers of clients wishing to see me. This has resulted in my decision to temporarily limit my availability to Tuesday and Thursday at the Clayfield clinic only. However if you wish to see me on another day please contact me on (07) 31528266 to see if we can arrange something suitable for you. At this stage I would like to encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to get all your "ones and twos" issues sorted out while we all have some "good quality time" at home with our children too!!! PS I promise you I wont be doing this with my children either (yet!) See more

24.01.2022 After practising in the area of "ones and twos" for over 20 years now, I dont often see too many surprises. However I wanted to share the story of Axxxx who managed to certainly impress me this week. This 13 year old young man who is medicated for ADHD on a daily basis, has delightful social skills, and a fantastic supportive mother, but has never been dry at night EVER. He started seeing me in April to try and fix this before his school camp in May. I was dubious about th...e timeframe we had to work with, but started my therapy anyway. He worked diligently every day to maintain a good routine with his fluid intake, and his bowel habits also improved. He was initially slow to respond to the bell and pad alarm at night, but definitely showed signs of improvement in the week prior to camp. I wasnt confident of his ability to remain dry at camp though, so recommended he start Minirin to help hide the bedwetting symptoms while he was at camp. To my surprise, he decided not to take the medication, and has remained dry every night in the lead up to, and during, camp. The happiness and confidence he has gained from this experience was a delight to be a part of this week. What a fantastic result for him and his mother! I am sure with a few more weeks of maintaining the same patterns, he will remain completely dry at night from now on. See more

23.01.2022 What an inspiring project to follow! This must only be a positive thing for anxious children who dont like the school toilets? https://www.abc.net.au//the-school-toilet-projec/11406954

23.01.2022 Please have a look at my new website and let me know what you think? http://onesandtwosot.com.au

22.01.2022 I get so frustrated when I hear stories from parents who have "tried everything" and their child still has problems going to the toilet independently. Today I saw a 5 yr old boy who is due to start school next year and has ASD (level 1). He was constipated as an infant so was given advice by a gastroenterologist regarding medication. He has since seen a Paediatrician for his ASD, Occupational Therapist for the "anxiety" surrounding the toilet, Psychologist (for the same reaso...n!), and a SLP for his "selective mutism" about the topic of toileting. No wonder he doesnt want to talk about it after nearly 5 years without getting any results! My greatest frustration is when inexperienced OTs are consulted for help with toileting and they choose to try and address it in other ways (eg they address the childs anxiety about this issue by running off any excess energy, or provide blowing exercises or sticker charts, or give them gross motor experiences to strengthen their core and pelvic floor muscles!!!). Please note that these strategies do not work for a child who is anxious, stubborn, and/or constipated! Parents need to be aware that not every Occupational Therapist in private practice understands, or has in depth knowledge and experience about this topic. Please know that if the topic is not specifically addressed, then the therapy may well be a waste of your time and money! I will keep an update on the progress of this particular child in the weeks to come just to prove my point.... See more

21.01.2022 Please spread the word that this information evening would be a good way for all parents to gain a better understanding of all the skills and abilities children need to be ready for school next year. Get organised now and make sure your child will make an enjoyable and successful graduation to Prep in 2020.

21.01.2022 Ive been aware for some time of how many parents agonise over the reasons why their children refuse to do a poo at all, let alone in the toilet. I usually advise them not to worry too much about the emotional reasons (assuming there is nothing medically wrong). It often can be as a result of a child being anxious/stubborn and not wanting to change their habits of pooing in a nappy. Others get so engrossed in their activities that they dont pay attention to body signals. Som...e have had such a long history of painful stools or messy soiling, that they choose the strategy to "hold on" which only exacerbates the problem. As a result, this only makes the whole topic of poo a very negative one. In Occupational Therapy I can assist parents and children to better understand the physical reasons and managements strategies, as well as the psychological reasons and solutions. I hope that those families who worry about the psychological issues as being of most significance, realise that it isnt necessarily something that requires just a Psychologist to provide help with either. 19.01.2022 What a fabulous way of getting reminders for the toilet and then keeping records of all the events that happen along the way. Im going to trial this with some of my clients in upcoming weeks but would love to get any feedback from anyone else that finds this user friendly! Its just a shame that you cant schedule the specific time for reminders. Potty Toilet Training by Francois Duchemin https://pottytraining.me/

17.01.2022 This week I had the opportunity to review Chelsea - a 14 year old girl with global developmental delays. She was successful in becoming independent with using the toilet 6 years ago when she first came to see me. This year she continues to have quite specific problems with the correct use of wiping herself with toilet paper. This app is a recent addition to my tools which she responded well to. It clearly depicts the sequence of the stages involved with using the toilet in... a video, followed by an easily adapted review quiz. The stages of toileting are also available in PDF format to assist those children who are better at learning using visual prompts. Her mum is particularly good at running with my ideas at home so I dont imagine she will need to visit me on a regular basis. Its a great way of brainstorming ideas for parents who are struggling with children who have special needs sometimes! See more

17.01.2022 I started work again this week and have a long list of new clients lining up ready to see me. Im particularly looking forward to helping the family of a 3 year old boy with mild ASD who have made a special trip up to see me from Sydney (the holiday at the beach was an added extra!). I will be checking in by phone, email or FaceTime on a weekly basis to make sure things are going to plan, in follow up appointments in the oncoming weeks. Its good to know that the referrals and recommendations are coming from interstate so please spread the word if you know of someone who also is struggling to get the right assistance and doesnt have support and lives in regional or rural areas or interstate. I am very happy to help no matter where you live! Appointments can be booked online via the website!

17.01.2022 Toilet training season has definitely started with a bang in recent weeks. I hope this might help many of you engage your children more happily to sit on the toilet for at least a couple of minutes (although Id prefer it if you used this afterwards as a reward for sitting first!) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WrziuyiLAK4

16.01.2022 Due to the increasing demand on my services in recent months, Im pleased to be able to offer an extra day to see clients each week. So from March 2020 onwards Ill be available from Monday to Thursday between 8.30am and 3pm. Please be aware that I will not be taking new clients just prior to the Easter school holidays so now is a good time to book an appointment to see me!

16.01.2022 I am now available at Clayfield in a new location with the Our Family Health Care team every Tuesday and Thursday. I will still be available at East Brisbane on a Monday. See the website for more details! Online bookings are also now available to clients at https://ones-and-twos-occupational-therapy.cliniko.com/book

15.01.2022 This is the time of year that I suddenly find I am swamped by new families wanting some help before school starts for their children next year. Please make sure you get in touch with me now if you are in the same situation and are thinking about getting help, as I am less available during the Christmas school holidays. Please be aware that it will take 4-6 sessions with me for things to improve! Look forward to hearing from you all soon!

14.01.2022 The issue of toileting problems is fraught with negativity - understandably! The words and emotions surrounding the toilet are most commonly unpleasant and cause distress and anxiety to the child, and everyone else involved. The best way of dealing with these situations is to focus on what you want the the children to be able to do (poos in the toilet), rather than what you dont want them to do (i.e soil). So often I hear a parent say in front of the child, "Im worried abou...t XXX soiling at school/kindy and they will make a big mess". Instead, I encourage parents to say.... "I would be so excited if you did a poo at kindy/school today that Ill give you a ........(rewards)". It sounds totally different to the child to hear what they need to do, rather than what theyre not supposed to do. Children often revert to "holding on" as a strategy, because they are associating anything to do with poos/wees as being a negative or terrible thing. Come and talk to me about other ways I can help you stay positive with toileting problems! See more

13.01.2022 So glad I was able to help! Lets hope I can help lots more families again this year.

13.01.2022 Two more wonderful success stories today at Ones and Twos OT! Lxx (three years old) has mastered the use of the toilet and can take himself now for ones and twos after only three sessions with me. His parents cant believe that only three weeks ago he relied entirely on a nappy! However he is very vulnerable to constipation so I will be keeping a close eye on things for another couple of weeks! Jxx (7 years old) has finally had clean undies for the past 2 weeks! This is so e...xciting because he has finally experienced success after years of soiling himself on a daily basis. This has happened despite his initial opposition and reluctance to participate with my therapy because he has failed at so many attempts with other specialists in the past. It is hard to describe the happiness and confidence that is exuding from him now, and his mother is so incredibly calm as well! See more

13.01.2022 Excellent news! I have just had the pleasure of seeing a mother who was in tears because her 11 year old boy has had his first clean week EVER! I saw this young man a couple of years ago and made limited progress because of some underlying attention deficits. Since then he has been put on Ritalin by a Paediatrician and seen another Psychologist with no further progress made. However his parents decided to get in touch with me again and we started therapy two weeks ago. By changing his laxatives and adjusting his motivation (of course he needed limits on screen time so this was the obvious reward to choose!) we have finally seen good progress. The look of pride and joy on this young mans face was indescribable! I really do have a great job!

11.01.2022 Today I saw a 7 year old boy for the fifth time and he has had his first perfect week - EVER! Yet again, he has previously been to see many other specialists including a gastroenterologist, another Occupational Therapist, Mars clinic, and psychologists. He has constantly soiled every day since he was toilet trained, and his mother had made him wear Pull Ups as a result - until now! This week he has been able to wear undies, has good sensation and can take himself to the toilet, and has received plenty of screen time as a result! The main goal now is to keep the success going until he never returns to the bad old ways. What a great way to end the week for everybody!

10.01.2022 What a wonderful "thank you" gift to end my therapy with this delightful young man who first came to see me in April. He has suffered terribly from not being able to poo for 3-5 days at a stretch since mid-2018. His mother has been truly dedicated to helping him with his constipation issues and reluctance/defiance to poo in the toilet. After following all my advice and suggestions, he is now taking himself every day to the toilet without any need for medication!

10.01.2022 For all those families who are now spending good "quality" time at home with your children due to the social distancing rules, please consider coming to see me to fix your "ones and twos" problems. Ive had some wonderful feedback this week from parents who have found it an ideal situation to focus on these problems with great results. I am continuing to see clients in my Clayfield rooms every Tuesdays and Thursday, but am also now available for video/phone consultations if you would prefer.

09.01.2022 Did you know I am available to help you via Skype calls? Ive just spoken to two clients today from Bundaberg and Ballina, and will be contacting other clients from Blackall and Charleville as well next week. Please get in touch if youre not living locally and I will see what I can do to help you with your Ones and Twos issues!

07.01.2022 Problems with toilet training children are one of the common topics that I am frequently asked to help with. My latest success story involves Txx - a 3 year old boy who has been anxious about doing a poo anywhere except in his nappy. After only 3 sessions seeing me over a 3 week period, he is completely "fixed". I always advise parents to use a laxative when going "cold turkey" with a nappy to avoid the child becoming constipated. However this has to be administered carefully and correctly, in conjunction with heaps of education, use of the right words when managing behaviour, and an effective and appropriate reward system. Txx no longer needs the laxative, and is now happily telling his parents of the need to do a "number two" in the toilet. Such an easy success for such a traumatic issue!

07.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/watch/ This is for all those parents who are struggling to maintain a sense of humour with their children who are currently suffering with Ones and Twos issues. Please get in touch with me NOW to make an appointment as I will be unavailable for any appointments after 14 December 2020.

06.01.2022 After many years of working from rooms with a great group of Paediatric doctors who have been incredibly supportive of me, I have made the tough decision to relocate my practice on the southside of Brisbane. From 1 March I will be working from a convenient and family friendly location at East Brisbane. Parking and access should be fantastic with fewer traffic hassles as I will be further away from the South Brisbane hospitals. Please check out my website for more details!

04.01.2022 What an interesting start to term 3. Yesterday I saw four new clients among many familiar old ones for review. They varied from an 8 year old who still sets the bed, to a 13 year old with constipation, a 3 year old who needs help to use the toilet for poos after long term issues with constipation, reflux and dairy intolerances, and a four year old who still relies on a nappy for poos and is going to school next year. With five other new clients starting with me over the next couple of days, and twenty others to review, I wonder who else I will be able to help?

04.01.2022 Appointments are now available from Monday to Thursday between 8.30am and 3pm at the Clayfield clinic only. As a result of social distancing regulations I am no longer ablue to offer a service at the East Brisbane office. However I am happy to now be offering Telehealth consultations which has enabled families from NSW, Victoria, and NZ to currently access my services. Please phone (07) 3152 8266 to arrange an appointment.

01.01.2022 So many children I am asked to help, have problems progressing from doing a poo in their nappy to the toilet instead. This is very common amongst the 3 and 4 year olds I see. However occasionally I see older children who are still waiting to get home from school to still use a nappy. It is usually a quick and easy fix for these children with a lot of education and a couple of laxatives, and definitely some motivating rewards as well. This week Ive seen a couple of 7 year old...s with this problem who have managed to sort themselves out after only 3 sessions with me. Sadly I am also helping a 12 year old boy who is highly anxious about doing a poo in the toilet and would rather hold on all day at school so subsequently soils himself instead. Please do your children a favour and encourage them to wipe their own bottoms before they go to school so that they never get into these terrible predicaments! See more

01.01.2022 I want to share another happy story from a very happy mum this week. Her 4.5yr old daughter was constipated 18 months ago. She has tried using Movicol and Osmolax without success and she has continued to soil multiple times on a daily basis ever since. She has never done a poo on the toilet and becomes hysterical when the suggestion is made that she "just try". I saw her for the first time on Wednesday this week.... I am so amazed already Im sending you a virtual hug of app...reciation! I gave xxx 7 magic drops as soon as we got home yesterday had dinner, went to bed. Woke up this morning (kept her home from kindy) and I gave her 10 drops after breakfast she was very quiet. 11am hit and she came screaming over to me saying she had done an accident in her pants and she needs to sit on the toilet. We went straight to the toilet (just a small nugget in her pants) and she sat for a solid 5 minutes (did not want to get off) and did not stop pooing!! When she hopped off, she explained to me that she listened to the pooey tank man and he was saying its time to empty, time to empty. Her tummy was cranky she said, I need to tell Christine!! Haha. We put a sticker on her chart and she picked a big treat from her bucket of lollies (she picked out at the confectionary warehouse yesterday you should have seen her in that place!) Shes gone for her rest now and has been telling me how she cant wait to go to kindy tomorrow and tell the teachers about her clean bum because she has been listening to the pooey tank man and is emptying poo into the toilet. You. Are. Incredible. I know it is day one, but wow, so impressed.

01.01.2022 Here are some stories of the older children that I have recently been asked to review in my clinic.... Today I was delighted to hear back from a 12 year old girl who came to visit me last week. She has been brave enough to seek help after constantly soiling herself for years. Despite many attempts to fix this previously, she has been able to achieve several "clean" days this week after following my plan for her. She is already more confident and her mother is significantly ca...lmer! I also started therapy today with an 11 year old boy who has had long term problems wetting himself during the day, soils occasionally also, and totally wets the bed each night despite continuing to wear pull ups. He is currently in Year 6 and is normally developing in every way. He has seen Paeditricians, urologists, and other therapists who have advised a totally different approach to mine without success. He also relies on medication to assist with daytime spasming of his bladder. I look forward to giving you some updates on him in future. Finally, I encourage other families who have older children who think they have "tried everything" to still come and talk to me and see if I can offer them an alternative solution at "Ones and Twos Occupational Therapy".
