13.01.2022 #Womenshealthweek Despite being legally blind a hike is not out of the question. Susan is a Flinders University graduate (DM 98) and grandmother of Jacqui Beal, dietitian & Personal Trainer at Flinders University Sport & Fitness. Susan is a former paediatrician who investigated the circumstances surrounding Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) for more than 20 years. She is credited with being the first person anywhere to argue publicly against babies sleeping on their stomac...hs, and in the countries that have heeded her advice, including Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, the incidence of SIDS has almost halved. Now retired and legally blind due to Macular Degeneration, Susan enjoys staying healthy by bushwalking with her friends and her RSB Guide Dog, Xenn, regularly covering up to 50 kilometers per week. Although she can no longer see, she can still hear, smell and feel her surroundings and loves being outdoors. Susan also has weekly family dinners with her 5 children, 10 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild, and says that staying connected with her family in this way has been important for her health, especially after losing her husband, Robert, four years ago. 11.01.2022 #womenshealthweek. Flinders Uni student, team captain, team member Flinders Uni Stingrays, unbeaten this year and playing the the grandfinals this weekend. What does it mean to be healthy? My name is Michelle Wakim, captain of the Flinders University Womens Football team, the Stingrays. To put it simply, and to use a great clich, football changed my life; I am confident many female footballers would echo this sentiment. Football opened up a world of strength, passion, and c...ommunity for the women who support this game on and off the field. Football changes you physically. You realise the strength and power in the female body, and you discover a resilience which propels you forward when you dont think you can go further. You put your body on the line for your teammates, and they do the same for you. But if we are talking about womens health, we also have to talk about how team sports, such as football, benefit our mental health. The power of team sport has never been so significant as it has been in 2020. In a year widely defined by hardship, the women of the Stingrays football team have found a source of salvation and enjoyment in this great game. Football has stood as an outlet, a real flesh and blood experience as opposed to our virtual pandemic world , and a source of pure pleasure to our team. We have also found success: at the close of the home-and-away season, we sat undefeated and locked in a date at the big dance. At the start of the season, we found ourselves sitting around our changeroom, just happy to be training again after lockdown. We sat sharing our hopes for this season. The answers were unanimous: we wanted to take this competition as far as we could and make sure we treasured the road there. Now we sit on the other side of this season preparing for a grand final, in prime fitness, and a united front of women. Our success is led by our coach Michael Wakim the father figure to all, and my father as he returned for his second year coaching our team. We have seen his philosophy, teachings, and game style come to fruition, and hes empowered our side with knowledge and confidence. We have found our feet as footballers, playing a fast-paced brand of footy accompanied by ferocious tackling pressure. Football has been our way back into health, normality, and joy at our club. I encourage any women looking to expand her world physically, mentally, and socially to join a team, whatever the sport may be. The beauty of female friendships and womens health should be shared far and wide! See more

11.01.2022 Our biggest congratulations to our Joy Bullitis who won our Womens Health Week prize! Its so fantastic being able to share the with our Flinders University community.

09.01.2022 #womenshealthweek Flinders Flames Womens Football (Soccer) Club. Supportive, successful and a family that supports commitment to health and wellbeing. Club name: Flinders Flames Womens Football Club Year established: Flinders University had a womens soccer team in 1997, however, the league soon folded. In 2000, the womens soccer team was re established at Flinders Uni and named Flinders Flames. What is the best thing about playing a team sport? The absolute best... thing about playing a team sport is the friendships that you make along the way. The encouragement and the support from teammates both on and off the pitch is unlike anything else. Throughout the good and the bad times, there is someone to back you up and cheer you on, as demonstrated during COVID when we kept in contact using social media for group fitness, weekly drinks, team challenges and support groups. Another thing is seeing the success of other teams around the club and how happy and excited people are when they are able to share that success with their teammates. How does your club encourage its players to stay healthy? The club encourages its players to stay healthy in a variety of different ways. The main one is having a proper recovery session on a Monday night after a hard game on the Sunday to ensure we maintain our fitness not hinder it. The coaches really make sure that we know how to rest and recover our bodies and take care of any other niggles that may cause problems. The club also encourages us to keep fit and healthy outside of training and games by offering us extracurricular activities, such as strength and conditioning, being able to build up strength and put it to use in trainings and games is such an asset. Having an ex-Socceroo in Joel Porter our Head Coach, has also been beneficial as he has a wealth of knowledge and experience he passes down to us. What are some of the key elements that have contributed to your clubs success? The amount of dedication that everyone puts into their part within the club; from the committee, to the coaches down to the players and spectators. Everyone is willing to help out, be that running the lines for a 90-minute game, canteen for only an hour, travelling a hour out of town to cheer on another division, everyone puts in so much effort to be able to showcase what a brilliant club we are. Players in div one are friends with the players in div six who they might not see all the time due to training and game times but when we are able to catch up and have a chat; it means the world. We have a saying at our club that surmises us perfectly, Flames Family, it reflects the genuine love we all have for the game as well as each other, everyone who steps foot on the pitch every Sunday is so proud to be a flame. 06.01.2022 Lynda Norton, Flinders Uni lecturer and dedicated health and wellness advocate shares with you how health plays scuh a big part in her life. Lynda Norton Qualifications: RN GDip, Intensive Care MPH, PHD Role at Flinders University: Lecturer in the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology program What do you do to stay healthy? Exercise is really important to me and I do some form of exercise every day whether it is planned spin or barre classes or gym sessions at OneFit...ness. I cycle to work as often as I can and I take every opportunity to walk. Another important factor is regular mindfulness practice and I like to recall 3 pleasant things that have happened in my day and spend some time enjoying them. My cocker spaniel helps me to be mindful. What do you do to help others stay healthy? Our Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology students will enter the workforce armed with an array of skills to help people with chronic disease shift their behaviour patterns to healthier practices. I supervise the students in the Health2Go EP clinic and have met some inspiring clients there. My research has focused on helping sedentary people get back to regular exercise that they enjoy and can stick to. Each year I set a goal to achieve one new milestone, last year it was to trek through Nitmiluk National Park in the NT and this year I am staying closer to home and upskilling my software programming.
