23.01.2022 This mornings activity for the penguins was all about fine motor! We began our activity by walking around the garden finding lots of sticks, flowers and plants to use in our playdough! Playdough is great for children to strengthen their hands and fingers however, the loose parts we collected, gave children the freedom to arrange and rearrange, essentially using the parts to create their own rules and designs, which allows the focus of the experience to be on the process rather than the product. Fine motor skills are developed and strengthened when children grasp, squeeze, pull, roll and pick up small objects just like we did today!

21.01.2022 REMEMBRANCE DAY Children spent their morning learning the importance of this day and participated in a few activities. We began by cutting some rosemary that is grown in our very own garden and clipping it to each of our shirts. Children enjoyed making ANZAC biscuits that they will later enjoy before an outstanding effort of completing a minute silence. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minutes’ silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who di...ed fighting to protect the nation. In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day a day to remember those who died in World War One. The day continues to be commemorated in allied countries. After World War Two, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day.

14.01.2022 So proud of our children and their families for being so creative with their egg drop projects! Family input is about working together. It allows us to foster a sense of belonging for both the child and the parents. When parents and educators find a way to collaborate it strengthens the child’s identity and enhances their learning. Our philosophy at One Step Up recognises that families are the most important influence of a child’s development and therefore inclusion of our families is a vital part our program.

10.01.2022 SPACE WEEK What is World Space Week? World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: * October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration... * October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. What are the goals of World Space Week? * Provide unique leverage in space outreach and education * Educate people around the world about the benefits that they receive from space * Encourage greater use of space for sustainable economic development * Demonstrate public support for space programs * Excite young people about science, technology, engineering, and math * Foster international cooperation in space outreach and education #childcare #stem #eylf #learningoutcomes #science #onestepupchildcare #children #fun #dramaticplay

10.01.2022 Unstructured play allows children the freedom to explore, create and discover without predetermined rules or guidelines. It’s been shown to foster cognitive development while boosting physical development and social and emotional development. It specifically helps creativity and imagination, problem-solving abilities and social skills. Creativity and imagination: Because there are no fixed rules to follow, children can make their own games and guidelines. This opportunity to ...create and use imagination is important to cognitive development. Problem-solving abilities: Children work together during unstructured play to solve problems, like who takes the first turn in a game and establishing other rules of play. While activities should be supervised, allow children time to work together on problems before helping resolve a conflict or question. Social skills: Unstructured play encourages social skills and teamwork. Children take turns, learn to listen and share, develop imaginary scenarios and make decisions together. Because they are the ones driving play, they have the chance to learn on their own among friends. Playgrounds and outdoor spaces are ideal for free play because there are endless opportunities to explore and interact with the world. Children can race through a play structure, run in open spaces and create their own games based on what’s available. See more

07.01.2022 Sneak Peak of our renovations

05.01.2022 This morning our penguins enjoyed a fine motor playdough activity! We made blue and green playdough and then each constructed our very own unique version of planet earth! We used environmental prints (images) that are seen around our classroom to help us visualise planet earth before our little hands, fingers and minds got to work ! Playdough is such a great experience for young children. Not only do they love it, whilst children are poking, rolling, and squishing playdough, children develop the small muscles in their fingers and hands. ... They also gain strength and improve dexterity in their hands and fingers, critical areas of physical development for writing, drawing, and other purposes.
