27.12.2021 AN AYURVEDIC GUIDE FOR AUTUMN Autumn is a time for nourishing, warm, grounding lifestyle practices that prepare us for the depths of winter Nurture yourself as ...much as possible on a daily basis. Establish a solid routine - eat, exercise and sleep at the same time each day Rise early (6am) and get 8 hours sleep each night (bed by 10pm) Take time daily for reflection and stillness Protect feet, head, neck and ears from the cold Use humidifier with essential oils at night time Massage with organic sesame oil in the mornings. EXERCISE Favour slow, gentle, strengthening forms of exercise that promote rejuvenation rather than exhaustion. Aim to work at around 50-70 per cent of capacity. Before any physical activity, be sure to warm up slowly and include some joint rotations Establish a regular yoga practice, focusing on poses that promote warmth, grounding, stability and meditation and breathing techniques that help to focus the mind and calm and soothe the nervous system. DIET Consume food and drinks that promote good digestion, elimination and detoxification, and build immunity and strength (see for example Lee Holmes' 'Heal your Gut' book) Eating warm, gently cooked, seasonal wholefoods Favour sweet and salty tastes Cook with ‘warming’ herbs including allspice, basil, black pepper, cardamom, cayenne, cinnamon, cloves, fenugreek, fresh ginger, green chili, mustard, nutmeg, rock salt, rosemary, and turmeric Herbal supplements: Chyavanprash and Ashwagandha Herbal teas: Ginger, liquorice, or a combination of cumin, coriander, and fennel Eat meals at the same time daily: ideally, breakfast between 7:00 and 8:30 am, lunch between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, and dinner between 5:30 and 7:00 pm Eat only when you are genuinely hungry and eat until you are only 80% full Eat in a relaxed environment/mood this will help you digest food better. 30 minutes before breakfast, drink herbal tea, do a few minutes of invigorating pranayama, get your body moving with a bit of yoga/cardio Your digestive power peaks at midday, so make lunch your biggest meal and eat a modest, warm and easily digestible breakfast and dinner
