25.01.2022 Important research about the Great Barrier Reef, led by Jody M Webster, included in the 10 best science discoveries at Sydney Uni for 2018.

24.01.2022 Amazing footage taken by Sebastian Schmidt-Roach on a recent research trip to the island. ENJOY!

23.01.2022 Climate change and rising ocean temperatures are causing mass coral bleaching events, and these events are increasing in severity. When coral dies - the reef dies, and we lose all the structural complexity upon which the other reef organisms depend. Professor Maria Byrne and Associate Professor Will Figueira are co-leads of the 3D Reefs program. Capturing hundreds of photos of coral colonies and thousands of photos of reefs to repurpose into 3D models.... This work helps us better understand the complex reef structures required for regeneration. https://www.instagram.com/p/B53u9IqBNfv/?igshid=ov9ouqbr6adk

22.01.2022 Below is a link to the report by Penny Timms from ABC News featuring Associate Professor Jody Webster's work on One Tree Island. https://www.dropbox.com/s/mx3ovbcscggj/MarineHeatwaves.mp4

21.01.2022 As the third mass bleaching event in five years strikes the Great Barrier Reef, ANU researchers are discovering that another invisible threat of climate change - ocean acidification - could bring the reef crumbling down. Read more here: https://bit.ly/ANU_OTI

18.01.2022 The group from @sydney_science and @harvard_oeb just arrived on One Tree Island this morning and have already toured the reef flat around the island Fun fact for the day - the sea hare (Aplysia dactylomela) featured secretes a purple ink that was used as a colour pigment in Roman times!!

16.01.2022 Congratulations to Kelsey Sanborn from the Geocoastal Research Group at Sydney Uni for her award at the last Australian Coral Reef Society conference in Exmouth. Looking forward to having Kesey working at One Tree Island Research Station again!! #MarineScienceSydneyUni #coral #GreatBarrierReef

12.01.2022 Thank you for sharing this info GBRMPA One Tree Island Research Station is situated within a Scientific Research (Orange) Zone. Entry to this area is prohibited without permission from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. There are only two no-entry orange zones within the GBRMP, making One Tree Island and it’s surrounding reef ecosystem a unique and pristine environment in which valuable research can occur within.

11.01.2022 Great to be back at One Tree Island again with rest of the coral larval restoration team

11.01.2022 Leaving One Tree Island through different forms of transport. We said goodbye to Mike, Kynan and Mark from James Cook University. Lots of exiting research has been happening over the past few weeks here on One Tree :) We will be sharing some of the different experiments that were conducted and that are still being conducted by Gabi and her team from Oldenburg University. Thank you for the great pictures Andreas Bally.

10.01.2022 And we are in the news! https://www.abc.net.au//new-hope-for-great-barrie/11268014

10.01.2022 Join Associate Professor Jody Webster on an immersive, research-led teaching experience as he takes you on a guided tour of One Tree Reef in the Southern Great Barrier Reef. We will explore many of the reef environments and processes, while being exposed to some of the cutting-edge research the University of Sydney is conducting on the island. Associate Professor Jody Webster is from the Geocoastal Research Group in the School of Geosciences. The University of Sydney manages One Tree Island Research Station which hosts a wide variety of teaching and research activities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMYJUZWGUIk

10.01.2022 One Tree Island is currently seeking volunteers available either - 3rd May to 9th May 2020 - 28th July to 3rd August 2020 You must be available for the whole period and be able to make your own way to Gladstone, Queensland. You will also be required to cover your own food expenses and cover your ferry from Gladstone to Heron Island. The station will cover your travel from Heron Island to One Tree Island and your board during your stay.... Work involves noxious weed control, spring cleaning, painting and sanding, and other unskilled general maintenance tasks set by the Station Managers. Volunteers are required to work 4 hours a day. You are able to spend your free time enjoying the island and relaxing in a unique and beautiful place. If you are interested please send us an email with the subject Volunteer 2020 to [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you

08.01.2022 Did you know.... One Tree Island Research Station does its own data collection Here we are swapping over small HOBO temperature loggers and downloading the information to our data base! We collect data from three different locations within the One Tree lagoon and have two at each site... this information is available to visitors to the island!

04.01.2022 A great article written by Sophie Percival from the Australian National University... I always loved the water and the ocean. The only problem is I can’t swim! And yet, Bobby Sun is about to graduate with a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours), specialising in marine science.... Bobby explains how she ended up in this predicament: My Honours supervisor asked me if I wanted to do my research on One Tree Islanda coral cay on the Southern Great Barrier Reefand I was so scared to tell him I couldn’t swim! https://science.anu.edu.au//what-do-you-do-if-you-love-mar

04.01.2022 Goodbye to our last big group for 2019. These students from The Australian National University have been on One Tree Island for the last week for a Coral Reef Field Studies subject. We had great weather and we got to take the students out for a snorkel on the outer reef. They all did there own research projects on different topics to do with the ecology, biology or chemistry of the area. Was very interesting to see what they all came up with!

03.01.2022 https://www.abc.net.au//great-barrier-reef-most-w/12107054 Unfortunately, here on One Tree, we have seen bleaching within the lagoon and the outer reef crest surrounding the lagoon.

01.01.2022 Science in action on One Tree Island This group from The Australian National University are looking to better understand how each component of the reef contributes to its overall construction and dissolution. To do this we isolated patches of the reef, and measure the oxygen, acidity and carbon in the water, which allows us to work out how much the reef is growing and dissolving - Kate Holland (ANU Science) ... For some more context have a read of the article Kate wrote on the topic - science.anu.edu.au//ne/reef-built-day-then-dissolves-night Science at The Australian National University Faculty of Science, University of Sydney #onetreeisland #researchstation #science #climateresearch #greatbarrierreef

01.01.2022 Beautiful birds eye view of One Tree Island captured Elena De Bruine from ABC News. Taken during her visit to OTI in October with Penny Timms. Their report aired last night on ABC... I will post a link for those who missed it! https://www.abc.net.au//one-tree-island-by-the-ai/11732440
