25.01.2022 There’s a lot going on at the moment but did you know that June 5, 2020 is World Environment day?! We thought we’d celebrate by showing off a little of nature’s own creativity! A UNESCO World Heritage site and heralded as one of the top 10 geological wonders of the world by National Geographic, China’s Rainbow Mountains sit within the Zhangye Danxia Geological Park in Gansu province, north west China Covering an area of around 320 sq km and stretching up several hundred metr...es into the sky, this remarkable geological colour explosion took over 24 million years in the making (So don’t get disheartened if you think that project of yours is taking a little too long!) It was created from a combination of layered sediment, erosion and tectonic plate movement - the same one that’s responsible for the creation of the Himalayan mountains some 2000 km away in Nepal! The magnificent colours come from the iron and trace minerals that naturally occur between the silt and sandstone. This, combined with the 24million year time frame, has helped to create this remarkable striation of rainbow coloured mountainous rock! Magical

24.01.2022 For thousands of years, traditional Pacific Islanders have adorned their bodies with an array of exquisite jewellery, masterfully created, using only elements found within their natural environment . . Whether for a harvest celebration, a spiritual festival or a ritual ceremony, choosing the right piece of jewellery to wear in order to convey the correct message to others was a crucial part of the event! .... . Jewellery, for the Pacific islanders, served as both physical and symbolic protection, as a way of displaying wealth and as a means of communicating the social status of the wearer, while at the same time keeping up aesthetic appearances. Well, we all want to look our best! . . Hit the link here to read our full story - and while youre there, be sure to check into our shop for a few, exclusive, hand made, ornamental Pacific Island necklaces from West Papua. They are amazing!! https://www.onetribe.net.au//dis/trading-treasures-part-1/ See more

24.01.2022 This is an image of an original Japanese woodblock print from 1964, created by the artist Minagawa Taizo. The print is titled - Old Kyoto House, and the scene is that of a traditional Japanese kitchen Woodblock printing has been a traditional art form in Japan for 100s of years and used to create both single page images as well as entire books! The earliest example dates back to 764 when Empress Koken was celebrating her victory over her political opponent, Emi no Oshikatsu ... To thank the people for their support, Empress Koken commissioned a troupe of artists to transcribe a Buddhist text onto 1 million tiny scrolls. These scrolls were then placed inside 1 million tiny wooden pagodas and distributed to all the temples throughout the land Now theres politics for you!

23.01.2022 Kaga Temari (thread balls) and Kaga Yubinuki (silk thread thimbles) are traditional crafts of Kanazawa - the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, on Japans Honshu Island - and have been since the Edo Period, around 400 years ago . . These highly decorative and surprisingly robust treasures are made by hand using cardboard, cotton wadding and silk floss for their interior bases then embroidered, one thread at a time, with brightly coloured silk threads left over after sewing kimon...os . . Despite their beauty, both the Kaga Temari and the Kaga Yubinuki were originally made for utilitarian purposes - the thread ball, for children to play with and the silk thread thimble as an aid for sewing . . While these days, both are seen more as decorative items and given as special gifts, it is still a Kanazawa tradition for mothers to give their daughters a traditional Kaga Temari on their wedding day as it is said they bring much luck and happiness. Theyre so gorgeous, of course they do! See more

23.01.2022 The word Mandala actually means circle - or a sense of wholeness and originates from Sanskrit, the ancient language of India and the primary liturgical language of both Hindu and Buddhist religions throughout the world For both Hindus and Buddhists, Mandalas are said to represent the universe and the divine power of our natural world With complex designs based upon the system of natural order, balance and symmetry, Mandalas combine geometric forms with religious imagery ...to create masterpieces that act as a symbol, prayer tool, meditation device and holy blessing all in one! To discover more about the extraordinary art and science of Mandalas check out the full story on our website - https://www.onetribe.net.au//discover/the-power-of-balance/ and dont forget to take a peek in our store for a few exclusive, hand painted Nepalese Mandalas available to purchase now

22.01.2022 Indigo dyed batik, hand crafted by the Miao people, a hill tribe of the south western provinces of China, is particularly unique to this culture. Because of the geographical landscape of the region, the Miao were isolated from outside influences and so developed a style of batik all of their own . The materials they use - hand spun cotton, bees wax, the drawing tools as well as the indigo dye - are all sourced from their natural environment, nothing is brought in from outside... . The outcome - their distinctively elegant batik fabric, created by hand with only two colours - the deep blue dye from the indigo plant and the crisp white colour of the cotton cloth . Another extraordinary thing is that each design is in fact a retelling of a traditional story as this is how they pass on their heritage and culture. They say that Miao batik is akin to Chinese calligraphy as both only use two colours and both are used to inscribe and share the stories of their people . Read the full story about Miao batik on our website and check out our shop for a few unique pieces of this extraordinary textile. https://www.onetribe.net.au//d/of-bees-and-flower-fairies/ See more

21.01.2022 The Miao people, an indigenous minority group originating from South West China, are mostly Animists, meaning they believe that all objects, places, living creatures and even human handiwork possess a distinct spiritual essence and this essence, or energy, greatly influences their lives. Ancestral worship and shamanism are a part of daily life and folklore and superstitions are strong. Their complex myths, based predominantly on nature, help pass on their history and express ...their unique culture. But traditionally, the Miao people have no written language, so they tell their stories visually, through their exquisite crafts. To this day, the Miao revere the spirts of nature, and illustrate them in their embroidery, silver jewellery and batik work. The Miao are masterful storytellers and truly master craftspeople! Read more about these extraordinarily creative people in our 4 part article on our website. There are also a few exclusive hand crafted Miao items available to purchase in our store. Be quick, most are one of a kind! http://www.onetribe.net.au//discover/once-upon-a-butterfly/

Out of the 26 different ethnic groups in Sarawak, the Bidayuh people make up the second largest group. And the word Bidayuh means - inhabitants of land . . Well known in the region for her stunning batik silk paintings, Narong is a self-taught artist who gets her inspiration from the natural environment as well as the unique cultural... of her homeland . . In a semi-abstract style, she masterfully combines traditional indigenous objects such as masks (topeng), stringed instruments (sape) and sun hats (terendak), with an explosion of colourful indigenous plants and animals, creating truly dynamic, vibrant works of art . . We love her style! . . Catch more of here work on insta @narongduan See more

21.01.2022 Its a modern day dilemma - you desperately want a new set of lemon yellow bath towels to match your... ummm... toothbrush, but you cant find the right colour anywhere! This cant be right! Werent the stores filled with lemon yellow towels last year? Where did they all go? Welcome to the world of Colour Forecasting: the multimillion dollar industry whose sole purpose is to predict (or influence) the most fashionable colours for the coming season. It all started in the late ...1990s when a paint manufacturer, who sold mainly to interior designers, decided to announce their chosen Colour of the Year as a little marketing play. The idea was obviously a winner and by 1999, Pantone, a company famous for its colour matching systems, jumped in to announce THEIR first ever Colour of the Year! - called Cerulean. Its a light blue. While Pantone is now the most internationally recognised Colour Forecaster, the industry is actually made up of a rather large, albeit exclusive, group of colour-focused companies who gather together each year to plot out next seasons most fashionable colours. And just so all those fashion designers, furniture manufacturers and household nicknack suppliers stay one-up on the general public, these highly secretive Colour Forecasting dictums are passed down to those who need to know up to 2 years in advance! So, if youre still hunting for those lemon yellow bath towels, hang in there, lemon yellow is sure to become Colour of the Year sometime soon!

18.01.2022 Throughout history and across cultures, the art of miniature painting has been used as a sophisticated form of visual story telling since ancient Egyptian times . . Miniature painting developed as a kind of necessity as many people at the time could not read and commercial printing had not yet been invented, so all written documents were one of a kind. To help convey the meaning of a manuscript or other important document, artists were employed to illustrate the story and the...ir detailed, miniature paintings would sit alongside the written word . . Over the centuries, the art of miniature painting in India has been used to illustrate both Buddhist and Jain religious texts, promote culture and tradition, celebrate royalty and visually relay mythological literature . . But regardless of the subject matter, the highly detailed and microscopic intricacy of each painting was always of utmost importance . . Ive place a pencil tip in a few of these photos so you can see the incredible detail up close! See more

17.01.2022 Around 100km east of Poland’s capital city, Krakow, sits the wonderfully unique village of Zalipie, famous for its vibrant floral folk art paintings that cover almost every surface in the town! . . A tradition that started more than 100 years ago, it’s said that the women of Zalipie got sick and tired of cleaning the walls of their houses that were constantly covered in black sooty marks created by the smoke from their wood burning stoves.(they didn’t have chimneys at the tim...e) - So, once a year, after the Feast of Corpus Christ, the women got together and painted..... everything! . . Exterior and interior walls, barns, fences, water wells and buckets, chicken coops, furniture and evening their dog’s houses - no hard surface was left unadorned! . . Colour, nature and history; their decorative floral patterns are said to be one of a kind and inspired by their natural environment as well as their traditional folk lore . . Nowadays, the people of Zalipie have good chimneys. However, despite the fact they’ve managed to minimise the smokey black soot, their extraordinary painting tradition lives on . . The first ‘house painting’ competition started way back in 1948 and to this day, it’s Zalipie’s most famous annual event! See more

17.01.2022 What better day to celebrate a pumpkin than Halloween! Although, this is no ordinary pumpkin and actually, it has very little to do with Halloween... This extraordinary, larger than life, yellow and black polka dotted pumpkin is the work of the brilliant Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama - who in fact turned 90 this year! A sculptor, painter, novelist and performance artist, she was a celebrated Pop Artist before the term even became fashionable. Its said she was one of Andy War...hols greatest influences! Obsessed with both dots and pumpkins, throughout her career, Yayoi Kusama has created pumpkin sculptures, pumpkin paintings, pumpkin infinity rooms, pumpkin charm bracelets...she even handed out tiny pumpkins to visitors of her exhibition at the 1993 Venice biennale. This particular giant pumpkin sits perched on the tip of a pier on the island of Naoshima, in the Seto inland Sea of Japan. The island itself is worthy of many facebook posts! Originally a sleepy fishing community, in 1985 the whole island was transformed into a major Japanese arts hub with modern art galleries, fabulous contemporary architecture and large scale public sculptures. Enough creativity to keep you busy for days! But Im getting ahead of myself....... Happy Halloween, everyone!

13.01.2022 This eye-popping kitchen might seem a little over the top nowadays but back in 1928 it would have been seen as THE absolute height of design style! . Despite the fact there would have been no freezer, no microwave, no dishwasher, no automatic kettle or pop up toaster, you could still prance around in your gorgeous new kitchen, whipping up some yummy creamed fish, devilled eggs or a delicious pineapple upside down cake (trust me, totally 1928 gourmet!) . And while you were sla...ving over your 1928 stove, there was a whole bunch of other interesting stuff going on as well! . For the first time Mickey Mouse appeared in film; Alexander Fleming invented penicillin; bubble gum was invented (why?); AA Milnes The House at Pooh Corner was published; Katherine Hepburn was making her NYC debut; the first ever colour TV was demonstrated; the UK outlawed cannabis; the Australia aviator Bert Hinkler piloted the first ever solo flight from the UK to Australia (it took 15 days!!); the sliced bread maker was invented and, while Benito Mussolini decided to end womens rights in Italy, the UK passed a law lowering the age of voting rights for women from 30 to 21, now equal to men. . So, aside from creamed fish and canned pineapple, there was a whole bunch of other good reasons to get out of the kitchen!! See more

13.01.2022 Originating in Java, Indonesia, the art of Batik is the technique of applying melted bees wax onto fabric to create intricate patterns or designs, prior to dipping the fabric into a vat of dye. The wax on the fabric acts as a dye-resist, stopping the colourant from adhering to the fabric on the areas where wax has been applied Most people are familiar with the outcome - the intricately patterned fabric itself (think sarongs), but have you ever wondered about the highly detailed, handmade tools used to create those gorgeous patterns? Theyre truly an art in themselves! Read the whole story on how Indonesia invented the Batik stamp on our website! https://www.onetribe.net.au//in-search-of-the-perfect-pat/

11.01.2022 Theres something truly magical about Disneys animated films. Since the late 1920s when Mr Walt Disney himself drew that little mouse with the big ears, Disney Animation Studios have been bringing to life myths, legends and well know fairy tales with adorable scripts, loveable characters and truly spectacular scenery! While Mickey Mouse was of course Disneys first major animated character, debuting in 1928 in a 7 minute cartoon titled "Steamboat Willie", it was "Snow White ...and the Seven Dwarves", made almost 10 years later, that was their first movie length animated film - running for an amazing 83 minutes! One of the most fabulous thing about Disneys animation is their attention to detail. When Bambi was in production, they brought live deer into their studio so their drawings where as true to life as possible! And up until 1985, all of their animated films were imagined, designed, drawn and coloured by hand - not a computer in sight! Catch "Disney: The Magic of Animation" at the Art Science Museum in Singapore until March 2020.

09.01.2022 How to make a simple copper bangle in Sihanoukville, Cambodia ~~~ 1. First, you get a length of copper tubing and tightly wrap it with wire with the aid of a hand egg-beater type tool. (This is done to ensure the copper tubing doesnt bend out of shape during the rest of the process) 2. Then, the wire-wrapped copper tubing is secured to a bench with a vice and, using a metal cone as a guide, its coiled up into a tight spiral shape... 3. The spiralled wire/copper coil is then removed from the cone and cut into neat, even circles with a small hack saw 4. Lastly, the wire is unwound and removed from the copper circles before additional decorative copper elements are fixed into place - creating a simple but very pretty copper bangle!

07.01.2022 Delicious or disgusting, the (in)famous durian has to be one of the most controversial foods out there - and its just a fruit! . . Native to South East Asia, this weird looking, spicy skinned fruit has been known to cause mass gatherings as well as mass exoduses! .... . Its the smell that does it; one that is almost impossible to describe. The smell of a ripe durian has been compared to turpentine and onions, pig shit mixed with old gym socks as well as a sewer full of ripe pineapples. Are you salivating? . . And yet, at harvest season, its not unusual to find durian aficionados queuing up to buy their pre-ordered box to take home or discussing with great vigour the preferred flavour of one variety to another, kind of akin to a wine tasting! . . Love it or hate it, one thing we know for sure, you really have to try a durian at least once! . . 07.01.2022 There are 3 types of lacquer work in Vietnam - painted, mother of pearl inlay and the third pic here - eggshell inlay . . White, as a colour, is almost impossible to create in natural lacquer so its said that eggshell inlay evolved as, being pure calcium carbonate, they were a perfect material choice! .... . An incredibly laborious craft, the shells (usually duck, sometimes chicken) are first roasted over charcoal then broken up by hand into tiny pieces . . The object or surface, which is usually wood, is sprayed with a mixture of glue and paint, becoming the background colour you see between the inlayed shells . . Once the design has been sketched on to the surface, the delicate shells are then inlayed by hand using fine tools, taking great care to choose the right size and shape for each section of the design . . Finally, the surface is coated in up to 10 coats of clear lacquer, gently sanding between each layer, until a smooth and glossy surface is achieved . . What a beautiful way to up-cycle eggshells! 07.01.2022 Happy Chinese New Year, everyone! Well, almost! This coming Saturday, Jan.25, marks the start of Chinese New Year for 2020!! In traditional Chinese culture, each new year is associated with a specific zodiac animal - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig - with this year being the year of the Rat! With 12 zodiac animals in total, the zodiac cycle itself naturally repeats every 12 years so, if you were born in 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, ...1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 or 2020 - then this is your year! In following the principles of the Chinese zodiac, each animal is recognised to have certain characteristic so its believed that people born in a given year will have the same attributes as that years animal If youre a Rat then its said that youre quick-witted, resourceful and versatile. Your most productive hours are between 11pm-1pm (when most rats are out hunting) And, because of their fast reproductive rate, some people even pray to rats for children! However, just because this is your year doesnt mean its meant to be a lucky one - in fact, its said the opposite is true! But dont fret, they say the easy way to protect yourself from bad fortune and evil spirits is to wear red underwear every day for the whole year!! This gorgeous little Rat here is an original, hand stamped Chinese woodblock print. Ink on rice paper.

02.01.2022 If youre ever in Hobart, Tasmania, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to visit MONA - the Museum of Old and New Art . . Now in its ninth year, MONA houses ancient, modern and contemporary art from the collection of professional gambler and art collector, David Walsh. In fact, it was the money he made from gambling that enabled him to create this extraordinary building/ exhibition space. Yes, he won millions!!!! .... . Constructed predominantly from rusty iron, from the outside the building appears to be single story but in fact, most of the gallery spaces are underground, surrounded by exposed sandstone walls and dark, windowless spaces. Its very atmospheric! . . With authentic Egyptian mummies, a swollen red Porsche and original Sidney Nolan paintings, Mr Walshs taste in art is truly eclectic . . But its good to see hes got a fabulous sense of humour too - check out the last image to see the titles of MONAs catalogues available in the store! See more

02.01.2022 Okay, so now might not be the best time to be wandering around in unfamiliar markets (or even familiar ones!), but while were all at home staying safe and protecting humanity (yep, thats what were doing!) theres nothing wrong with thinking about and maybe planning our next travel adventure. 02.01.2022 No. 8 in our THAT WAS THEN series takes us back to 1969, to an article in the Australian Home Beautiful magazine titled, "Furnitures intriguing Future." These guys predicted that "...in the very near future, only the very rich will be able to afford wooden furniture. The rest of us will sit on aluminium or plastic." Remember the time when plastic was all the rage? No? Well, if you were a child of the 70s, you might recall your parents proudly coming home with their super gro...ovy, extremely hip new coffee table...that was entirely made out of plastic! Yep, those were the days when you could not only get plastic bags, you could also get entire lounge suites made out of the stuff! The first truly synthetic plastic was invented in 1907 by a guy called Leo Baekeland from New York. At the time it was called Bakelite - you know, its what the old telephones were made out of - His intriguing recipe included a mixture of carbolic acid and formaldehyde. Yes, really!! Today, plastics are made from natural materials such as coal and crude oil so thats kind of a plus, but the problem is plastics NEVER break down, which is a serious minus for our environment. Thankfully, our interior design trends have moved on a little...
