25.01.2022 For a period of time Islamic Terrorism had gone quiet. In a new research article for OHPI, law graduate Ellena Kouris looks at how ISIS has been launching a different kind of attack; attacking the minds of young people hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The article looks at how terrorist recruiters have been using the pandemic as a way of exploiting those in the 16-28 age group, by preying on their need for community and purpose at a difficult time. 24.01.2022 For those still awake... our CEO Dr Andre Oboler in speaking shortly for the UN for the Forum on Minority Issues, you can watch at: http://webtv.un.org/ Short summary of my talk: Wishful thinking is not enough to combat online hate. Neither are memes and videos opposing hate, positive initiatives that bring people and communities together, education programs for school, public advocacy or public education. Counter speech is not enough. Empowering young people is not enough. ...In short, the dominant approaches of recent years have not been enough to prevent a sharp rise in online hate, and the pandemic has only exacerbated the problem. We need to take the problem more seriously. We need to put real investment into solutions. Solving this problem takes real expertise, not window dressing. I started tackling online hate speech at a time when a small platform called Facebook, then with a mere 70 million users, was struggling to complete with MySpace. In this brief presentation I will share some of the initiatives I have taken over the years, and some of the lessons that come from them. My work began with tackling online antisemitism, and the fight against antisemitism remains the leading effort tackling online hate against a minority. There are lessons to be learned and applied in other contexts. Since 2012 I have been taking the lessons learned in tackling online antisemitism and through the Online Hate Prevention Institute, I have been applying them tackle other forms of online hate as well. I’ve tackled online Islamophobia, racism against Indigenous Australians, xenophobia against refugees, racism against the African community, COVID-19 inspired racism against the Chinese and broader Asian community, violent extremism targeting minorities, and more besides. The approaches I share will bring new ideas and highlight the need for effective collaboration between different types of stakeholders. I will highlight the serious work that needs to be done, the expertise it needs which is in short supply, and the serious engagement needed between governments and civil society experts in this space. It is time we recognise the need to empower and support civil society so it can seriously engage in this space. The problem has been growing every more urgent and now is the time for change.
22.01.2022 An article in J-Wire on yesterday's meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Task Force on Online Antisemitism highlights the contribution made by Australia's experts including the Online Hate Prevention Institute's CEO, Dr Andre Oboler. Extract: [Dr Oboler] spoke of the concept of antisemitism 2.0 which he first raised in 2008, a manifestation of antisemitism that used social media to normalise anti-Jewish hate not only in social media but also back in society. Dr Oboler highlig...hted how the hate in social media had become a pipeline into radicalisation and the role Holocaust denial was playing in this process. 11.01.2022 The struggle to hamper Neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups has been an increasing point of pressure for the end-to-end encrypted messaging app Telegram. Even after receiving notification from the Counter Extremism Project (CEP), Telegram, as VICE recently reports, failed to take timely action on a messaging group that frequently promote[d] recipes for explosives known to be used by jihadist organizations for suicide bombings. Telegram has been widely reported as a go-to... platform for terror recruitment, propaganda, and recruitment. The case, along with many past incidents, illustrates the necessity of public-private sector partnerships in the fight to make all social media platforms hostile to terrorist actors and ideologies.
