22.01.2022 According to Cancer Council Australia, skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers in Australia, with the majority of these skin cancers being caused by sun exposure. Surprisingly, the results of a study performed by the Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research found that the use of petrochemicals and UV exposure may actually lead to increased risk of cancer. Many Australians moisturise their skin believing they are safe. However the resu...lts of this study seem to suggest there may be more to the story. Researchers found that mice at risk of developing skin cancer following prolonged ultraviolet light exposure had their tumour rate increase from a low 24% to a massive 95% in just 17 weeks of consistent applications of some name-brand moisturisers, with the placebo creams having no effect at all. So the researchers now suspect that two of the petroleum-derived ingredients found in the moisturisers i.e. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and mineral oil (petrolatum) may actually promote UVB induced tumour growth. Cancer Council Australia, list Sodium Lauryl Sulphate in cosmetics, as a probable carcinogen, or may be carcinogenic, but with unknown carcinogenic risk of cancer as there is greater uncertainty because of the method of exposure. Further and more extensive research, like this one, would hopefully provide conclusive results. Meanwhile, the question still remains, are we actually harming ourselves with toxic chemicals when we use skin care products which contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and mineral oil (petrolatum) along with plentiful sun exposure?
