22.01.2022 You’ll be in Awe when you meet this Macaw! Tiberius is a specially trained Disability Service Animal from WA. A highly intelligent macaw who is attuned to his client's electrical impulses and can alert her to any changes in her body's natural rhythms. This amazing animal has been trained to alert his client Alicia, to take medication, go to a safe place or person, make herself comfortable or to call an ambulance. This could be lifesaving as she has a severe neuropa...thic pain disorder where she experiences seizures, intense pain, often falls unconscious and can even escalate to a stroke or heart attack. Listen to her fascinating interview with 6PR and learn more about Disability Service Animals here https://www.6pr.com.au/tiberius-the-16-year-old-disabilit/ Alicia is currently fundraising for another Service animal so she can continue to live independently when Tiberius retires. If you are in a position to donate to Alicia's cause head to her Go Fund Me page here https://au.gofundme.com/f/help-replace-tiberius #DisabilityServiceAnimal #DisabilitySupport #ServiceAnimals See more

19.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day. Not only are we commemorating the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have served, but we are also raising awareness of the higher rate of PTSD in the veteran community. We need to ensure veterans and serving members receive the care and support they need. If today brings up tough emotions for you or a loved one and you need extra support we encourage you to reach out to the Open Arms Counselling service on 1800 011 046 or Lifeline on 13 1...1 14. #LestWeForget #RemembranceDay2020 #Veterans #PTSD #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness

14.01.2022 This is an eye-opening article exploring how Australia fares in making our cities accessible and designing communities for a future of accessibility. While its not all great for many with visible and invisible disability, there are promising steps being taken in Geelong, the Victorian city working hard to become one of the most accessible cities in the world. Rural town, Mildura also rates highly in accessibility since a Disability Access Advisory Committee was established i...n 2001. This has enabled true collaboration between council and the committee to ensure consistent access and inclusion in the town. Have you visited an Australian town or city which is making accessibility a priority? We'd love to hear about it in the comments below #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityEquality #DisabilityAccessibility #Accessiblity #AccessibleCities #DisabilityAwareness #AccessibleLiving

14.01.2022 We all strive to raise our children to be respectful and inclusive individuals, but what is the number one thing we can do to ensure these qualities? Model it! Mum and disability advocate, Maria Spencer shares a common question she gets asked When my child sees a child with a disability or difference, what you suggest I tell them when I notice them staring? Tell your child it’s OK to ask a question - talk to them about polite, appropriate questions they could ask the ch...ild or their parent. Ask questions yourself. Use the opportunity as a ‘teachable moment’ to your child let your kids see the interaction between you so they know it’s ok to talk about children with disabilities in a positive way. If you’re a parent of a child with a disability, prepare an elevator speech about your child - a brief, simplified version of your child’s disability story so you capture their attention and truly teach them something about your child’s actions, sounds, appearance, etc. that made them look in the first place. Read the full article here https://themighty.com//teaching-kids-interact-children-di/ Image description: Two young girls with blue sky, a beach and grass in the background. The girl on the left is wearing a pink jumper and has pigtails and is sitting in a wheelchair with a tray. The girl on the right girl is smiling and is wearing a dark green jumper. Her head is leaning on the left girl’s shoulder.
