13.01.2022 Jugoya The Full Moon Festival in Japan Tonight We enjoy Tsukimi - viewing the moon and celebrating the harvest in Japan. People enjoyed viewing the moon on small boats and writing tanka poetry (Japanese traditional poems from about 1000 years ago). Japanese pampas grass and dango (rice dumplings), and vegetables such as taros and chestnuts are displayed on Jugoya in peoples houses and apartments. Japanese people associate the pattern of the moons surface with rabbits making MOCHI, that is rice cakes.

09.01.2022 What is Inari-zushi ? Deep-fried tofu skin pouches simmered in a sweet and salty broth of soy sauce, sugar and mirin (a sweet sake seasoning), then stuffed with sushi rice. It is normally sold at small local stores or specialized take-out stores. One of the charms of inari-zushi is that it can be easily eaten with one hand. Inari is deep-fried tofu (abura-age) sliced thin. The word comes from Inari shrines, where the fox has a place of honor. The words origin is ine nari (rice grains forming on the stalk), and in the old days Inari shrines venerated Inari, the god of agriculture. Over time, the shrines focused on the servant of that god, who happened to be a fox. Foxes are said to love deepfried tofu, and from this came the custom of calling tofu skins inari.

08.01.2022 For Japanese curry rice fans! It will be ready serving from tonight until sold out. You may choose adding chicken katsu or Kara-age as you wish. You might be surprised to know that, Japanese curry that we know of today didnt come from India. It was actually originated in the UK (which of course the English brought curry from India) and was brought to Japan in Meiji period. Curry was military food. British royal army serves curry every Thursday on their fleets. The reason behind this was because when they are sailing, dates and times are easily forgotten. When they eat curry, it reminds them that its Thursday.

01.01.2022 Obon (August 13 - August 16) is one of the most important Japanese traditions. People believe that their ancestors spirits come back to their homes to be reunited with their family during Obon and pray for the spirits. For the reason, Obon is an important family gathering time, and many people return to their hometowns. We make a horse made of a cucumber and cow made of a eggplant. Cucumber Horse means "We would like our ancestors to come fast". Eggplant Cow means "We would like our ancestors to go slowly.
