13.01.2022 At the base of every method, there are principles. Understanding the ideology and the intention behind a certain technique is crucial to successfully practicing it. Now let’s talk about Pilates. One of the (many) wonderful things that distinguish this method from other ‘workouts’ is the fact that all the principles highlight the quality of movement instead of quantity. We’re talking about breath, control, precision, concentration and more. In Pilates, it’s never about the r...ange of movement, the number of repetitions, the weight or the speed of the movement. In my classes, I make room for other qualities such as the flow of movement, continuity and balance. These principles derive from the simple idea of Joseph Pilates that we should be fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure. Many times this concept is misinterpreted. Especially among Pilates newbies, but unfortunately not only. I often meet students who tend to adopt the concept of over working and over recruiting the muscles just because they think it’ll make them stronger. Remembe, we ask a different question: how can I become more efficient, more natural and more conscious of my movement while performing performing my daily tasks? One of my goals as a Pilates instructor is to change that mindset that some of my students have. I ask myself how I can impact someone’s life so they are happier and healthier and more efficient movers.
