21.01.2022 OntheNet is turning 25. From humble beginnings in late 1994 we already had 40 phone lines by mid 1995 when this newspaper article appeared. Although we have moved on a long way from the 28.8Kbps dialup modems, ISDN lines and our DSLAMs with ADSL2+ to NBN, when it comes to service we haven't changed a bit.

21.01.2022 OntheNet’s Managing Director took a few weeks leave recently. He returned to this office featuring: new red carpet, a Santa door with snow sprayed windows, a new 3D fireplace (including sound, a mantelpiece, personalised stocking, cards from each team, advent calendar & family photos & portraits mounted), ... a live pine Christmas tree, decorations galore & presents, a new Christmas ringtone and display on his desk phone, bluetooth speakers in the ceiling playing Christmas carols, and, a remotely controlled hidden canon that covered the room in confetti! Anyone got a better Christmas prank to share?

20.01.2022 OntheNet is turning 25. Humble beginnings. In late 1994 we purchased some dialup modems, a SUN UNIX server, a CISCO router, setup a small office with a fax and answering machine, installed some phone lines and a 64Kbps ISDN connection to the internet. We hoped to eventually have a few hundred dialup customers to reach breakeven. In the first year we reached 1000. (cheesy then and now photo recreation.)

19.01.2022 OntheNet is turning 25. The web started off as text and images, but pretty quickly people started experimenting with streaming audio and video for both publishing and communications. Decades later we have YouTube, podcasting, Skype and WhatsApp. Here is part of an early OntheNet email newsletter (all text of course in 1996) to our subscribers about the move towards audio and video.

11.01.2022 OntheNet is turning 25. Back in the days of dialup modems you could pretty much tell the speed of the Internet connection by listening to the tones of the modem when it first connected. 14.4Kbps, 28.8Kbps, 33.6Kbps, 56Kbps. What was the speed of your first dialup modem? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsNaR6FRuO0

04.01.2022 OntheNet is turning 25. Arguably the graphical web browser was the invention that helped the internet really take off. The earliest web browsers in wide use were NCSA Mosaic (1993) and Netscape (1994). Later Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome came to dominate our computers, phones and tablets. What was your first web browser?
