25.01.2022 Need a fun idea to reinforce literacy concepts this week? Try a Scavenger Hunt! Pick a phoneme your child is working on, set a timer for 10 minutes or so, and send your little explorer off to find as many things as he/she can that contain the target sound! (Madly attempt to finish something on your own to-do list for 10 minutes!!), then when the timer goes off, spend some time reviewing your child’s finds and discussing the sounds you can hear. You could even try spelling or writing (copying, depending on ability) some of the words afterwards, for some spelling/handwriting practice! You’ve got this, Homeschooling mamas and dads!!

21.01.2022 What are Decodeable Readers and why are they so important? A decodable book is a book for a beginning or struggling reader which contains words she or he can sound out. In practice this means it contains sound-letter relationships and word types its reader has been taught. It doesn't include patterns not yet taught. It also relies minimally on sight words or words with irregular spellings which cannot be easily sounded out. Here is a great article on why decodeable re...aders are such an important tool for teaching young readers. https://www.google.com.au//what-are-decodable-readers-and-

19.01.2022 If you know anyone looking for a super Speechie in Sydney’s North Shore, I highly recommend Emma at Chatterbots Speech Pathology!

19.01.2022 So, many of us suddenly became Homeschooling parents this week! As a result, I’ve been asked a lot of questions regarding literacy instruction, by parents who are feeling a little lost. So I’ve recorded this short video with some information about early reading instruction. As I mention in the video, the best tool to use in supporting young readers is Decodeable Readers. My favourite decodeable readers are from Little Learners Love Literacy. They are available as traditional hard copy readers, but also as downloadable ebooks from the App Store, and the great news is that Set 1 is available for FREE right now!! (Pic in comments). I hope that helps!! And I’ll share some more resources soon!

17.01.2022 A little school-from-home humour!!

15.01.2022 In our house, Summer holidays means Summer Reading Logs! = (Because sometimes kids need a little extra incentive to choose reading over other activities! ). As a result, our newest reader has been reminded that he LOVES reading! Oh, and so far he’s pocketed $3.20 as well!! I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a win-win!!

14.01.2022 More lovely - and FREE for now! - decodeable readers, that you can download and use to support your little reader’s new skills!

14.01.2022 Here’s an easy just for fun idea for the kids next week! Dinosaurs could be replaced with whatever your little one is into!

12.01.2022 ONLINE GROUP LITERACY SUPPORT! I’m excited to announce that On Track Speech Therapy will now be offering small group, online, literacy instruction for children and families needing a bit of extra support in this unusual school-at-home season! Schools, teachers, and parents are doing an amazing job adapting to these unique times and supporting their students’ academic development! My hat is off to all of you (us!). However, the struggle is real, as we all try to juggle thes...e new demands and ensure that our kiddos aren’t left behind in critical areas such as reading. If you’re worried that your child may fall behind, or are overwhelmed by the responsibility of teaching important skills, I can help by providing regular, programmed reading instruction and support in a small-group, online format. Groups are forming now, for the beginning of Term 2. Contact the clinic for more information or to secure your child’s spot!

09.01.2022 Speech Therapy should be effective and evidence-based. But Speech Therapy with children must first be FUN or it has no chance of ever being effective! For that reason, I like to let a child’s interests direct the toys we use in therapy (while I choose the speech and language targets! ). Today, a client’s love of monster trucks drove (pun intended! ) our session - we practised size and colour adjectives, as well as location words like under, next to, and on top, as my little friend and I took turns giving instructions for where the trucks should drive. We had heaps of fun AND got some great language practice too!

07.01.2022 Ooh, look... another great phonics/literacy app that’s free for a little while!

06.01.2022 I’m excited to announce that I’ve just completed additional training in literacy support and am now certified to implement the amazing Sounds-Write phonics reading program! I had a ball doing this course! Sooo many lightbulb moments about how children learn to read, why some children struggle, and - most importantly - how to help! I can’t wait to put my new learning into practice!

03.01.2022 A great freebie for those of us teaching a new reader! Be quick - ends today!! (Sorry for the short notice!!).

03.01.2022 What a wonderful resource! Thanks Audible and Chatterbots Speech Pathology!

02.01.2022 The Speechie, the parent, and the reader in me loves everything about this delightful children’s story and its sweet reading by the Obamas! I’ll definitely be adding this book to my collection! https://youtu.be/U-hTKWCX7hc

02.01.2022 OUR VIRTUAL DOORS ARE OPEN!! Like all of you, I’ve been busy learning new things this week, and am excited to announce that remote learning options are now available! Telehealth sessions, as they are called, can be conducted using an ipad or a computer and enable children to continue receiving the speech, language, and literacy support that they’ve been accessing, in spite of current limitations on face-to-face contact. Feedback from parents who have already switched to Tel...epractice have been overwhelmingly positive! I will be getting in contact with all current clients this week, to make sure that you are feeling confident and so we can make the transition to Telehealth as easy as possible. I know that this is just the most awful stressful time for everyone. If now is not the right time for you to take up Telehealth sessions, I totally understand and there is no pressure! As always, feel free to get in touch if or when you are ready to start speech sessions again. Oh, and some great news - NDIS funds can be used for Telehealth and some private health funds will cover some of the costs also! And it looks like the government may allow Medicare to cover Telehealth speech sessions too, so help is available. Please contact us if you have questions regarding funding. Hang in there, parents, and thank you for all your support!

02.01.2022 Wow! Here’s a great visual about why regular reading at home is SO important! And why it’s vital to address reading difficulties early, so kids don’t miss out on valuable learning time!

01.01.2022 Here’s a functional reading activity for the kids...
