25.01.2022 At Onward this year, Sam Chan explored 'Cancel Culture' and how we're only 'one tweet away' from being shunned, shamed or expelled, even from our own tribe But Sam reminded us how the gospel challenges Cancel Culture - by highlighting God’s unconditional love for sinners, that all humans are broken, and yet Jesus 'cancels' no one. Even though the world is becoming increasingly divided into tribes of thought, we can still create inclusive communities marked by love, prayer, blessing and forgiveness for all people.

24.01.2022 We're sharing the answers that Sam Chan and Sam Wan gave to some of the questions asked by you at the Onward livestream! We hope that their wisdom will be insightful and practical for you, in whatever context God that has placed you SW: Like Revelation 7, there are going to be tribes and clans and groups even in heaven. But I think what is so distinct about groups for Christians is that cliques are bad but friendship groups aren’t bad. Cliques tend to be inward looking wher...eas a Christian friendship group is always an outward looking one. SC: We do need tribes. Henri Tajfel Social Identity Theory - for security, for pooling of resources, for economies of scale, we naturally form them, whether we like it or not. And that vision in Revelation shows we stay in our tribes but what’s not good then is the demonising of the other and also the fear from within - and having these witch-hunts to purge from within. If we can just be humble and secure then tribes should do the function that they’re meant to do.
23.01.2022 "Demonising the other" is defined as trying to make someone or a group of people seem completely evil. It's easy for us to make quick judgements of others. Sam Chan responds to this question saying: We don't demonise the other by seeing that we have a shared common humanity. This person is both in the image of God and I’m just as broken as they are. And think best of the other person rather than thinking the worst out of the other person. Let's pray that God will continue to help us to do this!
22.01.2022 It can be tough navigating being a Christian in a post-Christian world. At Onward, Sam Chan reminded us saying: Jesus tells us to love our enemy, pray for those who hurt you, bless those who you hurt you and forgive those who wrong youif you’re going to be known for anything, let it be known for this - that you love your enemy. Let us continue to be prayerful and continually seek God's wisdom as we stand out for Him

18.01.2022 "When it comes to discussions about Christianity and Atheism, it’s often suggested that Christianity is based on blind faith, but atheism is based on evidence. Christians just believe what they’re told. Atheists follow the evidence where it leads. Now, there are a number of reasons why that’s a faulty assumption..." - Ben Smart Read more: au.thegospelcoalition.org//resurrection-evidence-blind-fa/
14.01.2022 It can be scary to speak up as a Christian. Thankfully, the Bible is full of God's promises that He is always with us, and He gives us His strength. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10
11.01.2022 The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope. - Tim Keller

08.01.2022 "McCrindle Research has found evidence that a growing number of Australians are considering prayer and reading the Bible during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is welcome but, in some ways, not surprising. When we are faced with the reality of our mortality, many of us begin to ask the important questions about life and death and God. When life loses its security and certainty, we start looking for someone in whom we can place our hope." If you know someone who is wondering about this, why not take the opportunity to ask them to read the Bible with you? Read more: au.thegospelcoalition.org//pandemic-got-you-praying-youre/
05.01.2022 "There really is nothing new under the sun. Today’s issues, as desperate as they can be, were first yesterday’s issues. This means one convenient and profound truth for the Christian: the solutions have not changed. Christ is still the only hope for the world. He, as the light of the world, still shines, and the darkness with all its cold and confusion has yet to overcome it." A relevant read to our Onward theme this year on tribes and how to stand out from the crowd!
