09.01.2022 This is the Aire River which runs through the Californian Redwood plantation in the Aire Valley, Great Otways National Park. These trees were planted in 1936 as part of a larger statewide experiment to grow softwood trees to harvest lumber for construction (instead of importing it). Other plantations across the state included Baltic Pine, Douglas Fir (commonly referred to as Oregon) and of course, Radiata Pine which is what was eventually the most successful and now our main construction timber for residential properties. The Aire Valley plantation grew really slowly and it wasn't until the 1970s before they started to get really big (about 40m). Now, 80 years on they are giant trees and its a pretty amazing place.

01.01.2022 Ferns and Fir - Otways. This is one of the experimental plantations which was planted in the Aire Valley - it was never harvested so the Tree Ferns had a chance to grow eventually.
