25.01.2022 Nearly gone ..... Old timber slab Woolshed near Collector NSW.

24.01.2022 I like old steer chasers ! Charlie Chowns 1942 66 Blitz last used in the 90s in Reids flat Bush Fire Brigade . You can see some of the terrain trucks like the Blitz had to negotiate down Charlie's way in the background of one of the photos . Based on Studiebaker running gear and motor but with the right hand drive and Blitz cab not to many are around like this . A pretty handy old truck in the day carrying 900 gallons of water ,using a 16 horse Briggs pump she'd crawl aroun...d the hills all day . Not quite up to work cover specs now though! Charlie told me about one of the fires he attended with a then new Isuzu cat 1 tanker there too. They ran out of water and the driver of the Isuzu told Charlie that he would head up the hill to the dam first as he would be much quicker than the old truck. Charlie let him go first ,went and picked up some Tucker for the fellas ,then stopped a few times picking up suction hose sections from from the first truck on the track to the top of the hill .When he got to the dam the Isuzu was just backing into the water ! The old Blitz needs a water pump to go again and apart from that is in working order . Plans are in the wind for a shed for her to move into so she can be preserved . See more

17.01.2022 Baileys Garage Gunning . One of the country Holden Dealers that seemed to be everywhere back then . The fellas used hop on the train to head to Sydney to pick up new Holden vehicles and then drive them back to Gunning down the Hume and run them in at the same time ! 152 Holden vehicles sold in a year was the record!! Out the front today was a HZ one tonner sold by Bailey's back in 78. She's been done up and might be a wee bit quicker than when she was originally sold to a ...local cockie ! Wouldn't it be good to go back to the time when you could buy pretty much what you needed locally ! Bugger Woolworths ,Coles and Bunnings I say . See more

05.01.2022 Well I'm 15 years from a letter from the Queen ,Helen Faros tells Lydia ,Pete and me with a grin . Bigga( population 240) is famous for super fine wool but I reckon anyone who calls in to the Olympia Cafe in Bigga would agree that Helen is the village's best ambassador! I probably visit Bigga twice a year usually on the bike getting away for the day and always call in to Helen's shop to get a drink , a pie but more than anything to check out something that's really rare thes...e days - the speacial little shop / cafe / post office/ fuel pumps . It's hard to explain what gets me in other than to say it just feels homely and welcoming. You can tell Helen is a straight forward woman and straight talk makes clear understanding. The Faros Brothers started the business in 1926 and her uncle built the western part of the building housing the post office . The cafe part was a dance studio and musical instruments shop prior . There will be a big party when we turn 100 she laughs and it will probably go on for some time . I don't know what will happen to the shop when I'm gone ? It would be handy if the government would fix the dirt road to Reids Flat ,then we'd get more people going through town . If you looking for somewhere to go take a drive to a little places like Bigga and find out how good and unique they are . Aussie all the way ! See more
