17.01.2022 Wellness Wednesday! Peer worker Bree talks about the value in being open to new opportunities. Diversity is important in maintaining physical, mental and spiritual health.... You don't need to be elite at surfing, writing, creating, lifting, reading, learning, tackling or sitting mindfully. There’s value in just having a go. Try to embed an open and holistic approach into your daily life. Don’t skip leg day, flex your grey matter and nourish your soul. Find more food for thought from our peers here: https://www.instagram.com/openarmspeers/ #WellnessWednesday #OpenArmsPeers #OpenArmsSupport

11.01.2022 It’s been one year since we rolled out the Community & Peer Program nationally! This program has been hugely successful in complementing the support services Opens Arms provides, enabling Peers to draw on their own experiences of mental health and what works for recovery when helping other veterans and their families. From those early days of being a part of the pilot in Townsville to the roll out of the Program across Australia, I have watched the teams grow to 45 Peers a...cross Australia. Each Peer is extremely passionate about being there for veterans and their families. Next year, the program will be further expanded to two new locationsNowra and Maryborough. And, to be more accessible to regional Australia, we will also be starting web-based Peer Forums. Being a Peer has allowed me to remain connected to Defence, a community I have been a part of for over 28 years, and also be someone that’s here to support our wider veteran community family. Andrew, Peer Worker Thanks to everyone involved for their amazing work in the development and implementation of the Community and Peer Program! Happy Anniversary Peers! #OpenArmsPeers #OpenArmsSupport #StrongerTogether
06.01.2022 This year, Psychology Week highlights how psychology can assist with pain management and recovery. If you have a physical injury, it’s important to not let it define who you are: you are more than your injuries. Invisible pain conditions are hard to tolerate, but learning skills to take charge of your mind and body, and doing this with others who are facing the same challenges, can be very empowering. Jennifer Veitch, Assistant National Manager, Open Arms Our ‘Managing Pa...in’ treatment program is available online or face-to-face for members of the veteran community. The course will help you: Understand the link between physical and psychological aspects of pain. Learn strategies to challenge/change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. Discover important lifestyle factors for managing pain. Develop a Personal Pain Plan.
