14.01.2022 As part of our Self Care Canberra initiative, our staff and volunteers are sharing what makes up their wellbeing plans. Our wonderful EA Blanca Reyes has star...ted learning to paint. Research shows that creating art reduces stress hormones such as cortisol, and through art people can induce positive states of wellbeing. Engaging in visual and creative arts create conditions for mindfulness by accessing and engaging different parts of the brain. Blanca shares, Trying new things and challenging myself to develop new skills brought me to discover watercolour painting. I always thought that painting was not my thing and what a surprise! Now it is my to go activity when Im feeling overwhelmed or a bit down. Some colour mixing, music and a cup of tea bring me back to my calm self. What do you do as part of your daily or weekly self-care?

14.01.2022 April is Autism Acceptance Month. Many people have an understanding of Autism that is based on little more than stringing together a few popular stereotypes. Th...is video aims to help fill the gaps by cutting through the medical jargon and sharing instead the human side of Autism. In the past few decades the world has come a long way in its understanding of Autism. This is not least due to the contributions of autistic adults shedding insight into their own condition. Autism Explained empowers parents to understand their autistic children and create healthy supportive environments. By combining the experience of an adult on the Spectrum with a single mum who lives this stuff every day, we set you on the path to regain family harmony and actually enjoy time with your kids! 08.01.2022 For many people with disability, bushfires pose a greater threat - they can make mental health more fragile, can be difficult to understand and process whats h...appening and can physically make evacuation and care harder to access. Here are some resources that might be useful, particularly for adults and children with intellectual disability and/or autism. I wish all those affected the best, and give our deep gratitude to all the helpers - the firefighters, the evacuation centre volunteers, all emergency services, those businesses delivering food, those helping in any way they can, and the support workers who are helping those with disability too. 03.01.2022 Today I went to Woden Mall in South Canberra to visit the sensory room - The Calm Room. Its in a corridor opposite the toilets, on street level. The staff at the nearby Concierge desk will issue visitors with a code, that lasts six months, to unlock the room. Hopefully this is something that will catch on in other buildings and services.

02.01.2022 Nice summary of how storytelling builds attachment-- and it is one of the expressive arts four-part model of healing practices when it comes to trauma repair an...d recovery; I must have told thousands of stories over the decades to children from violent homes who were subjected to interpersonal assault and verbal abuse. And of course, they told me thousands of stories through images when words were way too painful or impossible. Here is an excerpt that outlines one of the key principles: "Remaining positive is essential to any childrens story. We might include some conflicts and drama, especially as a child ages, but a good story should have a positive outcome and leave a child with a good feeling. This helps build a childs sense of safety and resolve, and connects that good feeling with you. Its one of the principle features of storytelling. By allowing a child to encounter a difficult situation in a story, then providing resolution, s/he/they have a chance to practice for real life."
