Ashgrove Iris Garden, 53-55 Torrens Valley Road (cnr Randell Terrace/Albert Street), Gumeracha is opening for it's 21st year. Ashgrove is a well established garden with in excess of 900 named varieties of Iris. The garden also has mature trees; a small woodland area; over 200 roses in formal rose bed...s; formal ponds with fountains, a tiny Summer-house, and so much more! Windspiel, at 2 Parkgate Place, Upper Sturt, is a lovely garden created on a challenging site - beautifully crafted stone walls have been cleverly used to transform the sloping hillside into a series of terraces linked with a crisscrossing network of paths and steps. 23.01.2022 Sharing something a little different this time. With all the difficulties and stress in the world at the moment, perhaps we could all appreciate a gift fairy....flowers, fruit, veggies, plant cuttings would all be welcome gifts. Another way to brighten a strangers day!
21.01.2022 A mid week tour of June Blake's garden in Ireland. So much colour in this summer garden! "The very best gardens intrigue and restore us, and so it is with June Blake's garden which is a rare fusion of inspired design and painterly planting. Situated in the townland of Tinode in west Wicklow, and spread over three rural acres, it wraps itself around Junes home, a handsome Victorian farm-stewards cottage surrounded by a huddle of austerely beautiful, granite-stone farm buildings."
21.01.2022 Mid week, enjoying beautiful spring weather, and time to enjoy another peek into an English garden. This week we have Sarah Raven sharing her love of Hydrangeas.
20.01.2022 Today is the 1st of September - officially the first day of Spring and also Wattle Day in Australia. On 1 September 1988, Golden Wattle was declared officially as Australias national floral emblem. Although wattle was associated with Australia from very early days, its significance increased around the time of Federation. The first celebration of Wattle Day was held on 1 September 1910 in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
20.01.2022 Its almost the weekend following another week of rather wet, cold weather....so its time for another beautiful virtual garden visit! Unfortunately this garden is not open to visit in person, but we hope you enjoy this virtual visit. Heatherby, located in the Adelaide Hills, last opened to the public through Open Gardens SA in 2016. Heatherby, originally owned by the Birks family from the early 1890s, is sited to overlook a near level two acres of land. Heatherbys majesti...c old trees tower over and create a leafy green setting for the charming white weatherboard cottage that was once the childhood home of renowned nursery man, Quentin Wollaston of Raywood Nursery. Many of the trees are rare and unusual and were planted by the Wollaston family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Species include a heritage listed weeping elm, oaks, maples, lindens, magnolias, conifers and the beautiful claret ash, Fraxinus Raywoodii. (Tullie Wollaston planted the first ever of the now popular claret ash trees as a chance seedling at his Bridgewater property). The gravel drive is edged with the pretty pink Bonica roses, cerise pink Princess Maude azaleas and a formal box hedge. In front of the house beds of hydrangeas open onto the central oval lawn and from here a walkway leads to a formal seating area enclosed by a circular hedge. Nearby a rocky waterfall trickles into an informal pond, its edges softened with an assortment of plants including a profusion of dainty seaside daisy. Shade provided by the canopy of tall trees creates the perfect microclimate for Daphne Eternal Fragrance, hydrangeas, camellias, rhododendrons, fuchsias, arthropodiums, clivia, gardenias, azaleas and hellebores. Children love to explore the wild woods that are beyond the formal gardens and tennis court and with the railway line at the bottom of the garden, there are ideal vantage points for train spotting! A delightful, cool and shady Hills garden. See more

19.01.2022 A weekend of lovely weather - the sun has been shining at last, even if the morning was a bit chilly! And its time for another virtual garden visit - Fifty Shades of Green. Regrettably this garden is NOT open to visit in person. However, we hope you will enjoy this virtual visit. Fifty shades of Green by name and fifty shades of green by nature! This garden last opened to the public in December 2019. This garden, completely hidden from view by a tall olive hedge, has ye...ar-round interest thanks to the original work of well-known garden designer Virginia Kennett. A series of garden rooms on the gently sloping site lead up to the house, which is set off by multi-level decking and a mature array of sculptural succulents. The garden features a well thought out selection of tough Mediterranean climate plants both Australian natives and exotics chosen for their shape, the texture and colour of their foliage and their low water requirements. The planting shows that often species considered commonplace can look quite outstanding when well-placed and given sufficient space. Mature bougainvillea and hibiscus create accents of strong colour while by contrast, ground hugging Dymondia with delicate white edges to its leaves, makes an intricate green patchwork between slate pavers in another of the garden rooms. A dramatic and arresting feature is the strongly sculptural seating which frames the fire pit as you enter the garden. To the rear is a courtyard, which though compact, has interesting plantings of agave and dracaena. A tiny private garden can be glimpsed through a gate. The pool area benefits from an excellent borrowed landscape including a dense Viburnum tinus hedge. A contemporary garden with strong bones and interesting architectural plant selection. We hope you enjoyed this virtual garden visit, and remember, this garden is NOT open for you to visit in person. Please listen to the advice from official, reliable resources in regard to COVID-19 and may you and your loved ones stay safe and well.

17.01.2022 Are you ready for another virtual garden visit? This week we visit Beaumont House and Gardens, and if you enjoy this virtual visit, you can also visit these gardens in person. On SUNDAY 27th September 2020, the beautiful gardens at Beaumont House, 631 Glynburn Road, Beaumont, are being opened to the public by the National Trust of SA. The garden will be open from 10am to 4pm. Entry is $8 and some concessions are available. Refreshments will not be available to purchase on sit...e, however visitors are welcome to bring along a picnic. Although this garden opening is not hosted by Open Gardens SA this time, we hope you will visit and enjoy this amazing garden. The garden at Beaumont House provides a fascinating glimpse into colonial life in SA. Beaumont House was originally built for the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide, Augustus Short, and his family who lived there from 1851 until they moved to Bishops Court in 1857. He named it Claremont and chose the location because of the views and cooler climate. His early plan shows garden to the west, north and east of the house. He is recorded as planting fruit trees and olives, and early sketches show shrubs and succulents under native trees bordering a driveway. The property was donated to the National Trust in 1969 and is managed and maintained by the Trust. Beaumont House became the Trusts state headquarters in 2009 and since that time a dedicated group of volunteer gardeners, led by horticultural consultant Merilyn Kuchel have worked hard to rejuvenate the gardens. Old outbuildings and an aviary have been restored and a fountain installed. The Olive Grove is being rejuvenated and in 2017, for the first time since 1962, olives were harvested and oil produced. Much progress has been made in the garden in the past ten years, despite continuing problems with the pump and watering system. A group of around 15 volunteer gardeners, who help out most Wednesday mornings have assisted with an enormous amount of weeding, mulching, planting and garden maintenance. On the eastern boundary, crpe myrtles have been planted, and a variety of tough shrubs to screen the road. To the west, native callitris have been planted to hide a house and fence. In the large bed north of the house, crab apples, daturas, murrayas, solanums and hibiscus have been added. A herb garden has been established, behind which there are three young almonds and a quince tree. In the NW corner a stone pine, 3 grey box gums and other local natives donated by Burnside Council have been planted. We hope you enjoy this virtual visit and also take some time to visit the garden in person on Sunday 27th September. See more

17.01.2022 A quick mid week visit to a very resourceful ladys garden in France!
17.01.2022 Are you ready for another "virtual" garden visit? Welcome to Seaview. Regrettably this garden is Not open to visit in person at this time of the year as we take a break over winter. However, we hope you will enjoy this virtual visit provided for your pleasure, in anticipation of a spring opening! Seaview, located in the Adelaide Hills, last opened to the public for the first time through Open Gardens SA in Autumn 2016, which is when most of these photographs were taken. T...he gardens of Seaview are expansive, beautifully planted and very well maintained. Century old trees, mostly oaks, shelter the garden and are under planted with camellias and other flowering shrubs, perennials, bulbs and annuals. In one corner an ancient Bunya Bunya (Auracaria bidwillii) towers over the garden. Formally trained hedges conserve the historic aspects of the 19th century main garden and provide a strong contrast to the natural plant forms which dominate the landscape. Further away from the house a vegetable garden produces many edibles for the kitchen including raspberries and strawberries, and an orchard produces apples, pears, stone fruit and citrus. More recently a valley garden has been formed around a newly constructed dam and extends up the side of the valley to the garden boundary. This takes the form of a woodland garden and is planted with a rich diversity of trees particularly those that produce brilliant autumn colour. We hope you enjoyed this virtual garden visit, and remember, this garden is Not open for you to visit in person at this time of year. See more

It's been a very wet, wintry couple of days, so stay warm and dry and please enjoy another "virtual" garden visit - this weekend we visit Anna's Garden. Regrettably this garden is NOT open to visit in person. However, we hope you will enjoy this virtual visit provided for your viewing pleasure! Annas Garden last opened to the public in October 2019. This vibrant suburban garden starts on the verge where di...etes, agapanthus and iris grow under the jacaranda street trees. Inside the front fence a thickly planted assortment of roses, salvias, cottage plants and some veggies have replaced the lawn. A beautiful ginkgo tree adds to the ambiance. Behind the house a series of paths divide garden beds crammed with ornamental plants that intermingle with vegetables, herbs and fruit trees. Productive plants are an important part of Annas garden and fruit and vegetables are in plentiful supply. The mainly Mediterranean fruit trees include mandarin, tangelo, lemon, quince and cumquat; also peach, nectarine and damson. Pots are used extensively, particularly along the side of the house where there is shade and under the trees where the soil is dry. A group of potted ferns and a collection of blue and white pots are just some of the charming decorative features. The tall trees provide shade and a sheltered feel. Eight bins are used to convert green waste to compost which keeps the soil healthy and able to sustain the dense planting. A pretty and productive garden with every available space filled with something of interest! We hope you enjoyed this virtual garden visit, and remember, this garden is NOT open for you to visit in person. Please listen to the advice from official, reliable resources in regard to COVID-19 and may you and your loved ones stay safe and well.

09.01.2022 Welcome to our next virtual garden visit and this time we visit "The Chestnuts", which is located in the Adelaide Hills. Regrettably this garden is Not open to visit in person at this time of the year. (We take a break over winter!) However, we hope you will enjoy this virtual visit provided for your pleasure, in anticipation of a spring opening! Magnificent mature trees are a dominant feature in this elegant, hills garden. The Chestnuts was built as a Victorian villa... to escape the summer heat of the plains. It boasts not only oaks, birches, liquidambers, laurels and maples but an Atlas cedar, a cork oak, golden elm, copper beech, and of course, a chestnut tree. Beneath these trees grow a happy and varied collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and camelias. Among the many features of this property is the rose garden where dramatic rich purple colours have been used and irises bloom in abundance. There are several well designed areas each creating a different mood, including a hot border of strongly coloured shrubs and flowers in vivid oranges, yellows and red. A lower wild area, hidden behind laurel hedges, is towered over by a stately cork oak. From dappled shade a stone edged path sweeps by an arbour wreathed in long scented racemes of wisteria reaching almost to the ground. Curving around a sunny garden of blue and yellow shrubs and perennials, the path comes to a shady seat in a sunken area beneath an English oak where mollis azaleas bloom. Here there is a garden pavilion overlooking the tennis court, where a leisurely cup of tea can be taken. We hope you enjoyed this virtual garden visit, and remember, this garden is Not open for you to visit in person at this time of year. Please listen to the advice from official, reliable resources in regard to COVID-19 and may you and your loved ones stay safe and well. See more

09.01.2022 Are you ready for another virtual garden visit to one of our beautiful South Australian gardens? This time we visit Spring Court Garden located in the Adelaide Hills. Regrettably this garden is NOT open to visit in person. However, we hope you will enjoy this virtual visit. Two stylish stacked stone pillars stand either side of a long narrow driveway which leads into this very secluded garden. Hardy low growing perennials line the driveway and a row of eucalypts tower above... them. Inside the garden a smoke bush and two golden ash trees with a borrowed backdrop of more eucalypts continue above the fence line which surprisingly is just below the S E Freeway. On the other side a magnificent old river red gum is underplanted with pink Bonica roses. Beside the carport the house almost disappears behind a semi-circular raised garden bed with a central pond surrounded by a mix of shrubs, iris and roses. Stone work features throughout some added when the garden was re-designed a few years ago. Lavenders, roses, salvias, sedums and kangaroo paw in a long perennial border provide year-round colour. Box hedging borders pathways and bottlebrushes trimmed as a hedge form a tall dense screen. A pergola is covered with wisteria and beside this the box hedging continues. Clipped abelia interspersed with nandina add to the formality of this lovely area and a row of ornamental pear trees provide more shade. Fruit trees have been expertly espaliered along the fence. Trees and structures create areas of dense shade and as well there are hot sunny spots. With appropriate plant selection this very pretty garden flourishes and is a wonderful example of how to make the most of micro-climates in a garden. We hope you enjoyed this virtual garden visit, and remember, this garden is NOT open for you to visit in person. Please listen to the advice from official, reliable resources in regard to COVID-19 and may you and your loved ones stay safe and well.
09.01.2022 The sun is shining, birds are singing, and we thought you might enjoy this pretty English garden.
08.01.2022 We were, unfortunately, unable to open our last open garden for the Spring season, Nick Mount Glass Studio and Garden, due to COVID restrictions. For everyone who was disappointed at being unable to visit, we hope you might enjoy this "virtual" visit instead. International glass artist Nick Mount uses his garden not only as a productive and decorative outdoor room but an integrated part of his artistic practice. The garden seamlessly embraces his studio, workshop and open sid...ed grinding Cabana. There is evidence of hands-on creativity throughout the garden. The garden is a work space, an inspiration and a refuge with a strong emphasis on fruit and vegetable growing. The small lawn area is delineated from the productive area by a pair of faux Roman pillars; there’s an Etruscan style fountain without water and a dovecot without doves. A thick mooring rope links to a productive mound massed with vegetables and herbs. Moored here are three small dinghies carrying a cargo of herbs and strawberries. Examples of Nick’s glassmaking are found adding beauty to the fruit and vegetable garden and a novel mini garden shed displaying garden tools makes another decorative feature. We hope you enjoy these photos! See more

06.01.2022 If you enjoyed this virtual visit a few weeks ago, you can now visit in person! The beautiful gardens at Al Ru Farm are being opened to the public by owners Ruth and Alan on SUNDAY 20th and MONDAY 21st September 2020, 10am to 4pm. Funds raised assist in supporting the CFS. Al Ru Farm is located at 1016 One Tree Hill Road, One Tree Hill. Open Gardens SA is not hosting this garden opening, however, we wish Ruth and Alan a very successful event. For more information, pleas...e visit Al Ru Farms webpage alru.com.au Al Ru Farm, located at One Tree Hill, last opened to the public through Open Gardens SA in 2019. Ruth & Alan Irving planted a few trees in 1981. Previously sheep grazed to within 10m of the original small stone cottage and camped under the 10 Ash trees close by. Serious planting commenced in 1985. Ruth has planted more than 16,000 trees and shrubs at Al Ru in 35 years, as well as thousands of bulbs! Before the large lake or the stylish farmhouse come into view, the driveway passes a rusty biplane sculpture mounted on a tall pole in the adjoining paddock, a telling sign that this garden is full of surprises! Talented plants-woman Ruth Irving, inspired by her visits to gardens in every corner of the world has created a series of garden rooms each with its own distinctive style and palette of plants. In spring, the woodland garden feels joyful with vivid pink silene, lime green euphorbia, bluebells, honesty, columbines, campanula, Dutch iris and the blossom of six different varieties of crab apple. There are colour-themed perennial borders, a wisteria and rose covered arch leading into the white garden, a formal rose garden and a delightfully informal wild area where perfumed freesias and tiny white lawn daisies have been left to naturalise. Several thousand tulips and many more ranunculi have been planted and in spring they create spectacular drifts of dazzling colour throughout the garden. As well as being bright and colourful the tulips flowers vary in shape from traditional tulips to star-like singles, ruffled doubles and some with fringed and frilly petals! Other features include an exuberantly planted meadow garden, a silver border, lily pond, lake, garden statues and urns, swimming pool and outbuildings including a charming conservatory, the barn and a garden pavilion. The expansive lawns are sheltered by big old trees and dotted with the occasional wandering Guinea-fowl, chickens, cats, and a very large and friendly dog! Al Ru Farm is a big, boldly planted and beautiful!
06.01.2022 We hope you are enjoying this lovely late winter weather. And we have another virtual garden visit for you to enjoy. This time we travel to Mandalay. Regrettably this garden is not open for you to visit in person at this time of the year through Open Gardens SA. However, we hope you will enjoy this virtual visit! Mandalay, located near Mt Barker Springs, last opened to the public through Open Gardens SA in November 2016. Developed around a central formal axis, this roma...ntic Mediterranean inspired garden is a green oasis in a harsh landscape thanks to access to desalinated water and the careful selection of heat and drought tolerant plants. Strategically placed urns and dramatic sculptures provide focal points inside neatly clipped hedged garden rooms which are sheltered from the hot sun by mature deciduous trees. A sheltered courtyard features a parterre filled with roses. Avenues of pencil pines, white graveled paths, topiary balls, sculptures and urns provide structure which is softened by the looser forms of lavender, rosemary and salvias. Peaceful and romantic the garden has become a favoured venue for weddings providing intimate spaces and long views to the borrowed landscape featuring evergreen oaks and olives reminiscent of Italy. We hope you enjoyed this virtual garden visit, and remember, this garden is not open for you to visit in person at this time of the year through Open Gardens SA. See more
06.01.2022 It's almost the weekend following another week of rather wet, cold weather....so it's time for another beautiful virtual garden visit! See more
05.01.2022 The highly popular Theatre in the Garden returns this January! In January 2021 Open Gardens SA and Blue Sky Theatre are presenting an outdoor performance of one of the most successful comedy adaptations ever One Man, Two Guvnors. Richard Bean’s madcap adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s 18th-century comedy, A Servant of Two Masters, is set in Brighton England in 1963. It tells the story of Francis Henshall, a failed skiffle player, who finds himself working for two guvnors. One,... Rachel Crabbe, is disguised as her dead gangland twin; the other is a snooty toff, Stanley Stubbers, who not only killed Rachel’s brother but is also her secret lover. Neither boss is aware the other is in Brighton, as Francis bounces like a shuttlecock between his two bosses trying to please them both. But how long can he keep them apart? As performances are outdoors, there’s plenty of room to enjoy a picnic and a drink from the bar. It’ll be another colourful and energetic experience under the stars. The play will be performed at three fabulous garden venues: Victor Harbor on January 8, 9 and 10. The Cedars in Hahndorf on January 15, 16, and 17. Wittunga Botanic Garden in Blackwood on January 22, 23 and 24. All shows start at 6.30pm. 03.01.2022 Welcome to our next virtual garden visit - Pomona Cottage. Located in the Adelaide Hills, this garden is delightful. Pomona Cottage opened to the public as part of Open Gardens SA in April 2016. This beautiful garden has previously been a part of the former Open Gardens Australia program, opening on 5 occasions. These photographs were taken in Autumn 2016. English box hedges, stone walls and steps lend definition to an award-winning formal garden hosting a dazzling array o...f flowers and beautiful autumn foliage. Landscaped on five levels, themes include a secret garden, rose parterre, rotunda and Japanese water garden with cascades and pools. Another feature is a Debutante camellia hedge. This stunning Adelaide Hills garden is set on of an acre. The planting of many English box hedges has created rooms in the garden which are very quiet, secluded areas. A pergola over steps near the Japanese Water garden was erected in 1997. A pink wisteria now covers this structure. Nearby the rotunda was constructed in 1999 to camouflage the rainwater tank and to give a wonderful view of the many beautiful garden areas. Bird baths and feeders amongst the garden have attracted many birds throughout the years. A large amount of seating gives full advantage of the views and the birds. Regular visitors include Firetail Finches, Blue Wrens, rosellas, lorikeets, corellas, Major Mitchells, kookaburras and many others. Occasionally a koala will appear on a path or up in a tree! And there are frogs and goldfish breeding in the ponds. We hope you enjoy this virtual garden visit. Please note this garden is not currently open to the public. See more

02.01.2022 Have you planted bulbs for flowering in spring? A garden providing amazing bulb inspiration each year is Avondale near Rhynie. Regrettably this garden is NOT open to visit in person at this time of year. However, we hope you will enjoy this virtual visit in anticipation of a spring opening. Avondale is an informal country garden transformed each year in spring when masses of beautiful bulbs burst into flower creating a patch of colour on the surrounding green woodland. T...he bulbs were planted decades ago by the mother of the current owner and since then have been encouraged to multiply and naturalise within and beyond the confines of the garden, their sheer mass making a spectacular spring show. The blue flowers of muscari, hyacinths and bluebells blend with drifts of perfumed freesias, snowflakes and several varieties of daffodils against a backdrop of mature ornamental trees. Vivid carpets of tiny cyclamen, dainty tulips, orchids and rockery plants add yet more colour beneath flowering shrubs and trees; several May bushes, a bright blue native hibiscus, purple toned perennial wallflowers, several white flowering Manchurian pears and a pale pink prunus. Four weeks later there are still thousands of flowering bulbs giving a stunning late spring display of colour. On the hill among the trees and grass there are now drifts of deep red, pink, orange and white sparaxis contrasting with the softer more muted tones of hundreds of cream, gold, and purple pink freesias. The silver birches have their delicate new leaves and under some of the cut-leaved variety, several pink azaleas are flowering. A line of Manchurian pears along a slate path is underplanted with scattered clumps of Spanish bluebells. Beyond are a group of big old pears planted in 1945, a large pink flowered Rugosa rubra rose and masses of bluebells that have colonised and now appear as a sea of beautiful blue. There are potted Cymbidium orchids in the sundial garden and weather permitting, hopefully a dozen clumps of the frilly edged Lemon Lace tulips will also be in flower. Under silver birches, slate and grassy paths link areas and lead to a series of rocky pools with little waterfalls - the largest pond is home to a family of goldfish. Rustic seats crafted from logs and slate are placed to enjoy views of the garden and the rural landscape beyond. We hope you enjoyed this virtual garden visit, and remember, this garden is NOT open for you to visit in person at the moment. Please listen to the advice from official, reliable resources in regard to COVID-19 and may you and your loved ones stay safe and well. See more

01.01.2022 A mid week tour of June Blakes garden in Ireland. So much colour in this summer garden! "The very best gardens intrigue and restore us, and so it is with June Blakes garden which is a rare fusion of inspired design and painterly planting. Situated in the townland of Tinode in west Wicklow, and spread over three rural acres, it wraps itself around Junes home, a handsome Victorian farm-stewards cottage surrounded by a huddle of austerely beautiful, granite-stone farm buildings."
01.01.2022 Another quick view of The Chestnuts, open today 25 October, until 4.30pm at 46 Waverley Ridge Road Crafers West.
01.01.2022 It is a rather damp and dreary winters day today - a good time for a virtual garden visit from the comfort of your own home. This weekend we visit Walnut Hill, located in the Adelaide Hills. This garden is NOT open to visit in person, however, we hope you will enjoy this virtual visit. Walnut Hill last opened to the public in November 2016. Well known author, garden historian, traveler and plant collector, Trevor Nottles own garden reflects his commitment to climate comp...atible gardening. But if you think that his garden would then be a rather run of the mill display of well-known drought tolerant common or garden plants then you would be wrong. An incorrigible plant collector Trevor seeks out and grows a huge range of very rarely seen bulbs and perennials mostly from the other Mediterranean climate regions around the world. To visit is always an education as well as a delight. The century old trees surrounding the cottage provide shelter for the more delicate or hard to grow species and a large collection of pots and urns provide superior drainage for those plants which would not enjoy the cold wet Hills winter soils. Galanthus - small, early bulbs from Europe, Turkey, Georgia and beyond, are a delight to see during mid-Winter and quite hardy here. They flower abundantly and increase well, demonstrating that they like our climate well enough. While there are several thousand named cultivars in the UK and Europe, Trevor manages with about twenty kinds which are scattered around the place under shrubs and in borders. Depending on how the season develops there could also be other small, early bulbs in flower - tiny daffodils and wild tulips, dwarf irises, crocus and cyclamen. In November the garden is full of the abundant flowers and fragrance of early summer with Clematis texensis clambering through the trees and heritage roses in full flush. We hope you enjoyed this virtual garden visit, and remember, this garden is NOT open for you to visit in person. Please listen to the advice from official, reliable resources in regard to COVID-19 and may you and your loved ones stay safe and well.
