25.01.2022 We have one more theme of the month for 2020! "What have you seen while out and about?" Send us images of what you are most enjoying as you make the most of our newfound freedom. Here we have pictured the "Urban Blooms" display created by Flowers Vasette to celebrate the iconic Flinders Street Station in Melbourne. What have you seen that's garden or plant related that inspired you?... Email high resolution images to: [email protected].

25.01.2022 Hosta is our plant of the week, and there are so many varieties there's a plant for everyone! Whether it's an adorable miniature hosta for a pot in your garden or a mammoth monster of a plant to fill up a big space under a shade tree. It's a genus of plant that is also commonly known as plantain lilies and occasionally by the Japanese name gibshi. Hostas are widely cultivated as shade-tolerant foliage plants and are very long lived under the right conditions. Visit our website for more info on this perennial plant that really is a favourite among many gardeners. https://opengardensvictoria.org.au/Plant-of-the-week-2-3-4-5

22.01.2022 This month let's look at how we can support our native bees in our garden. Did you know that unlike honey bees, nearly all of our Australian native bees are solitary. This means that they are not a hive insect, they live alone or next to others. Like honey bees, our native bees are very important for pollinating plants, especially Australian native flora species. There are so many special homes you can build for native bees. Pictured you can see hollow stems and you can also ...use bark, cane, sticks and even holes in clay and old pots or coffee cups. Read more on our website: https://opengardensvictoria.org.au/Kids_corner_jun21 We also have a great new kids competition coming up so watch this space!

20.01.2022 This entrant to our November "Pandemic Garden Project" competition is testament to a total garden transformation! The entrant writes: "Finally during Covid, we found the time to get all this concrete removed (it was a huge task!), and create a living, green and productive yet nourishing space filled with a variety of edibles and flowers. It is our happy place! We come out and pick fruit & veg daily and rarely need to buy anything from the greengrocers. We also enjoy the bir...ds, bees and all the insects that share this part of our garden with us." This competition is now closed as we eagerly await a winner! 17.01.2022 This garden is certainly a busy haven for our feathered friends. Our contributor writes: "We live in Rowville - this is the average daily visit morning and night - some hang around all day. We have a few hanging feeders which they love. It's all very social. The parrot has been a regular visitor for over a year. We did contact lost and found but no-one claimed it".

17.01.2022 In the before and after shots you can see the progression of this "Pandemic Garden Project". The entrant writes that this garden is in Horsham, on Wotjobaluk, Wergaia, Jaadwa, Jadawajali and Jupagulk land. Our entrant shares: "I launched into many Pandemic Garden Projects over the course of the year, but the one I'm featuring today I call "Turfing Out The Turf"! In a nutshell, I decided to dig out an entire lawn area (if it could be called that) and replace it with a garden.... I armed myself with my trusty shovel and got to work in April. The project has continued on to the present day (and will continue beyond it) and I have absolutely LOVED the journey". Enter our "Pandemic Garden Project" competition before 30th November for your chance to win a $100 gift voucher generously donated by Van Loon's Nursery. The owner, Heidi Martin, is our expert judge. Conditions of entry are on our website: https://opengardensvictoria.org.au/Competition-2-3-4-5-6-7
