25.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday // We no longer have any active projects in Cambodia, but this picture from our 2007 volunteer team is bringing back alllll the memories. Can you spot anyone you know here? Or maybe you were in the team? Tell us below!
25.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday // This was one of our very first surgeries in Tonga providing life-changing cardiac surgery. Can you guess which year this was?
24.01.2022 Often, we take the quality of our healthcare here in Australia for granted. Some patients in developing countries could only dream of what we have access to. Open Heart International sends teams of volunteers overseas to provide hope to those in need. But most importantly, each team has increased their focus on training local and medical nursing staff. This training is provided with the aim that the countries may gain self-sufficiency sometime in the future. We have a heart for others and if you'd like to support us on our journey, then please donate at www.ohi.org.au/donate, raise awareness and funds or volunteer.
23.01.2022 Behind these masked faces are some of the kindest humans that you'll ever meet To our patients? These masked faces have the biggest of hearts and are about to change their life forever. We are so grateful to have an amazing medical team who serve in the operating theatre to change and save lives during our project visits.
22.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday // Those green curtains in the ICU may bring back memories for some of you reading this. Any guesses where we are in the world in this throwback photo? Let us know below!
22.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday // Operating theatres in hospitals all around the world may look similar to many people. But who can guess which country this operating theatre is in? Extra points for the year, too!

21.01.2022 This Christmas, please consider giving a life-changing gift so that women like Saili Devi don't have to suffer from uterine prolapse. Over the last few weeks, we have shared with you Saili Devi's story. After spending 15 years in pain, an Open Heart International surgical team treated her uterine prolapse, but still she worries. But with your help, together, we can stop uterine prolapse in its tracks. Your gift of $30 can contribute to one woman escape pain, shame and hopelessness. 18.01.2022 With your support, together we are able to change little lives forever! And as a result of this? We can restore hope in families who are living in disadvantaged communities and lack access to healthcare! Simply sharing our posts on social media with your friends and family is an easy way of spreading the word about what we do and how we can change - and save - more lives, both young and old. Thank you for sharing this mission with us!
16.01.2022 Here at Open Heart International, we gift surgical best practice to the most disadvantaged communities on the planet. Without your help, we couldn't do what we do. From eye surgery and women's health to burns and cardiac surgery - please donate today to help us continue to save and change lives together: www.ohi.org.au/donate
16.01.2022 Our team of volunteers often walk away from project visits with their hearts a whole lot warmer and fuller. Not only do they experience changing the lives of those living in disadvantaged communities, but they return home with lifelong memories and friendships as they work closely together as a team. It truly is an amazing experience volunteering with likeminded individuals who begin as strangers, but leave as friends. Have you ever volunteered with us? What's your favourite memory?
16.01.2022 You know what they say: not all superheroes wear capes And it couldn't be more true! Why? Because our Open Heart International volunteers wear scrubs instead! And they are most definitely superheroes in our eyes!
15.01.2022 Our mission is to provide the opportunity for those living in developing countries to receive the specialised healthcare that they deserve, yet cannot access. We provide specialist surgery to release burn scar contractures in Nepal, where burns injuries are alarmingly high. This life-changing surgery restores not only functionality for burns victims, but provides hope as well!
15.01.2022 At Open Heart International, we believe in creating change that lasts, rather than bandaid solutions. That's why our volunteer teams work alongside local teams and provide treatment to create self-sufficiency. This ensures that lives are being changed and saved long after we leave. Your gift today can not only provide uterine prolapse surgery, but also train more Nepali clinicians and support more community health workers to protect even more women from developing the condition in the first place. This Christmas, you can help make a difference, too! From simply engaging with our page and sharing our posts, to donating via www.ohi.org.au/helpmore - we are so grateful for your support which enables us to continue doing what we are doing.
15.01.2022 The operating room may be 'behind closed doors' to most, but without the work of a team of skilled and reliable operating room surgeons, perfusionists, anaesthetists and nurses - important surgical procedures could not take place. Today, we want to celebrate and thank all of our medical team that work in the operating theatre who help make our patient's operations successful.
15.01.2022 It's rare to take a selfie with one of the younger patients and have them more interested in you than the phone...but hey, we'll take it! Because boy, isn't that just the sweetest look?!
14.01.2022 Often, the countries we visit have little or no access to cardiac surgery. This means that Open Heart International is generally the only chance for patients to receive life-changing and life-saving treatment. We are so grateful for your continued support - from sharing and engaging with our posts online to spread the word, to donating or raising funds to directly support us. Learn more about how you can make a difference by visiting: www.ohi.org.au
12.01.2022 The medical teams who volunteer their time with us have a huge heart for helping others, changing lives and restoring hope where it was often lost. We are so thankful for their willingness to make a difference in the lives of those all around the world!
11.01.2022 Our friends at The Children's Hospital Westmead (CHW) have set up a touching website so people can share their thoughts, stories and commemorate Neil Street (Streety). It is a beautiful tribute you can visit via: https://crikeystreety.com For those of you who were not able to attend the memorial on Monday held by CHW, a link of the recording will be shared via the website in the near future.

11.01.2022 Uterine prolapse does not just impact women's health, but their entire lives. We've introduced you to Saili Devi over the last couple of weeks. Her journey with uterine prolapse for over 15 years not only left her feeling hopeless, but in debilitating pain - with her husband threatening to leave her. After receiving free treatment from our team of volunteers at Open Heart International, both her relationship and health were restored. Please help even more women like Saili D...evi escape a life of pain, shame and hopelessness. You can stop uterine prolapse in its tracks. Please consider donating today at www.ohi.org.au/helpmore
11.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday // This team of volunteers provided life-changing surgery to women in Nepal suffering from uterine prolapse back in 2004. Do you recognise anyone in this photo? Feel free to tag them below or if you were here, comment and tell us your favourite memory!
10.01.2022 We hope you love this patient's huge smile as much as we do! You would think this photo was taken a few days after surgery. However, this was actually taken a few minutes before this patient entered the operating theatre. So why the huge smile, then? Because he was about to receive life-changing open heart surgery! Many of our patients are incredibly excited to be receiving surgery from our team, and we are so thankful that we have the opportunity to provide people - young and old, with hope! Please consider supporting us by simply sharing this post or visiting our website for more information: www.ohi.org.au
09.01.2022 You have likely heard it before: prevention is better than a cure. Providing corrective uterine prolapse surgery to 80 women a year is life-changing. But it's like trying to flatten a mountain by throwing pebbles off its peak. By training more Nepali clinicians and supporting community health workers to help prevent the condition in the first place, the impact of uterine prolapse in Nepal can be reduced for not just one, but for many.
07.01.2022 We are grateful for our incredible team of medical volunteers who share their time and expertise with us. It's because of their selflessness and your support that we are able to continue changing and saving lives! Please consider donating today to help us continue making a difference: www.ohi.org.au
06.01.2022 We are saddened to hear the news that Dr Neil Street passed away earlier this week. Neil made an extraordinary contribution to Open Heart International, particularly in PNG where he was instrumental in mentoring clinicians and further developing cardiac anaesthesia capacity. From 1996-2018 Neil volunteered 14 times in PNG and one time in Myanmar. Fittingly he was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015 for his contribution to medicine here in Australia and abroad. He will be sadly missed by all his PNG colleagues who learned so much from him and his Australian team mates whose lives were enriched through the fun times and laughter that Neil brought to every Open Heart International project visit. Our thoughts and prayers are with Neil’s family at this time Michael Were, General Manager.
05.01.2022 Today, the World Heart Federation is celebrating #WorldHeartDay - a day to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease Here at Open Heart International, there are three areas of cardiac disease we are focused on treating congenital heart defects, rheumatic heart disease, and coronary artery disease. In Australia, a patient would receive diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and, if required, surgery - regardless of the condition. However, families who are facing the same iss...ues in the countries we visit rely on the expertise of Open Heart International. Not only do we provide treatment, but we also provide training for in-country medical staff to ensure life-changing surgeries continue to be provided long after we leave. Please consider supporting our work further by sharing our journey online or visiting our website to donate: www.ohi.org.au
03.01.2022 Today's #ThrowbackThursday is taking us back in time to the Solomon Islands in the year two thousand and...any guesses?
02.01.2022 Our team visited Tonga in 2019 to provide cardiac surgery to patients needing it most. We love being able to transform the lives of those living in disadvantaged communities with specialised healthcare that they deserve, yet cannot access. Thank you for supporting us on this journey - we couldn't do what we do without you.
01.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday // Our young patients always pull on the heartstrings! This little one received life-changing surgery on our project visit to Fiji back in 2010.
