25.01.2022 . Flow + Breakdown Sunday 9am We love that many of you are starting your day with Mysore on Sundays! We are also sorry, that this means sometimes you might miss out. It literally kills me ... For the next few weeks the 9am will be a dedicated Vinyasa flow to prepare the body for an Asana found in the first or second series. Then we will spend some time workshopping the pose and it’s many variations. So if you do happen to miss out on Mysore, join me for this! I promise it will be super helpful and relevant to your Ashtanga practice, but concepts will be explored in a playful Vinyasa setting. First off the rank is Bakasana, which is a transition in primary and a posture we hold in two variations in Intermediate. Don’t like being on your hands? No problemo you will learn lying and sitting variations, that are just as challenging in their own way. Laila x taken in Mysore by Yogic Photos. Way to scared to straighten my arms at this height, and wondering how this shorty even got up there?

24.01.2022 A feeling is a rhythm imparted to the lungs. ~ Elemire Zolla. Do you notice the fluxing rhythms of your breath? Do certain breathing rhythms evoke certain feelings? Can you feel this imprint on your lungs? Can you change the rhythm, and if yes does this change how you feel? This video is from @eddiestern @thebreathingapp. The Resonance Breathing count can help us activate the vagus nerve, known as the nerve of emotion and can help us ground when our stress levels are ...heightened. It’s an easy go to, whenever you need to stop and breathe. quote is from The Art of Breathing in the West. Studies in Comparative Religion, Vol. 2, No.3. (Summer 1968). Not a long article and easily searched for anyone interested

19.01.2022 Cultural Appropriation and Yoga Teaching What is a cultural exchange? When does appreciation overstep into appropriation? Can we draw on modern knowledge and be culturally sensitive? YES, but first we need to understand why cultural appropriation is problematic. Unless we have personally had a lived (and processed) experience, it can be hard to understand the depths of the harm it can create. Not just for the individual but for an entire culture fighting to own their n...arrative, stereotypes and colonial induced oppression. I’m going to be super clear. You cannot be a truly trauma-informed teacher, without doing this work. As a POC who has been around western yoga studio settings for 20 years, I mean this with every cell in my body. It’s complex and something that needs time and space to comprehend. If you are wanting to delve deep and teach with compassion our 350 hour Teacher Training might be for you. Applications are open and we are nearly at half capacity. More info in the link below https://www.openhouse-yoga.com//yoga-social-justice-teache Porch practice done, back to the studio to teach and then straight home to continue editing our YTT manuals. These manuals are sparking some serious joy, filled with goodness Love Laila

15.01.2022 Flow & Breakdown : Padmsana This Sunday 9am My oh my, there are so many variations of lotus pose in Ashtanga! But guess what? There are just as many ways to approach how we do padmasana. It is not necessary to have both feet on our thighs, and this is a pose that deserves to be approached patiently and with curiousity. ... This Sunday we will be preparing our hips and breaking down the mechanics of this ancient pose, so we can approach it safely in our practice. Laila x Padmasana variations pictured L- R are Matysasana, Urdhva Padmasana, Baddha Padmasana and Yoga Mudrasana

10.01.2022 Kambarang Timetable Kambarang literally translates to rains decreasing. We see the return of the hot weather and an abundance of colours and flowers exploding all around us. Kambarang is a season of plenty and foods such as fruits, yams are abundant. October is also the most likely time of the year that we will encounter reptiles as they start to awaken from their hibernation, and Koolbardies (magpies) will be out protecting their nests and their babies. Many thing...s are undergoing transformation, are you feeling inspired to come out of hibernation and create also? Our Kambarang timetable commences October 1st. We hope you enjoy the change, and the last couple weeks of Djilba Season. #noongarseasons #seasonsofthesouthwest #newschedule #decolonise

10.01.2022 ''Please do not build a stupa for me. Please do not put my ashes in a vase, lock me inside and limit who I am. I know this will be difficult for some of you. If you must build a stupa though, please make sure that you put a sign on it that says, ‘I am not in here.’... In addition, you can also put another sign that says, ‘I am not out there either,’ and a third sign that says, ‘If I am anywhere, it is in your mindful breathing and in your peaceful steps.’'' ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
