20.01.2022 Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which also marks day one of the international 16 Days of Activism. In light of the campaign, we look back at this Q&A with our Domestic and Family Violence Program Manager Marianne Ibrahim, which discusses why it is crucial not only to raise awareness on domestic violence in Australia, but also to take action to actually make a difference https://bit.ly/38wSTHS

19.01.2022 Did you know this week is Social inclusion week? For the occasion we cast the spotlight on Patricia, a vibrant member of our visit program. Her outings being sharply limited due to her role as a carer for her husband, she sometimes feels the weight of being socially isolated. She tells us how having someone to talk to regularly provides her comfort & reassurance. Read more about her story: https://opensupport.org.au/we-solve-all-the-worlds-problem/

19.01.2022 Spotlight on our mask making extraordinaire: Back in September, our wonderful volunteer Denise hand made over 100 cloth masks for staff at St Vincent’s Clinic, who are thrilled with the results. The mask pattern is made according to NSW Health guidelines and help to provide that extra layer of protection as we go about our days during Covid. The wearing of masks whilst at the clinic is mandatory so thank you Denise for your support during these trying times!

18.01.2022 This Social Inclusion Week, we want to know how you have been reconnecting with your local community! By welcoming our neighbours of all cultures, age groups, nationalities and abilities, we can help beat the isolation that so many have experienced throughout the pandemic and beyond. We’d love to hear you Social Inclusion Week stories in the comments below! https://www.socialinclusionweek.com.au/

16.01.2022 Thank you to all those who have sent crocheted hearts to create a close-knit community. We have been amazed by your generosity and the steady flow of hearts we have received! There’s still 11 days left before we start packing our Christmas letters, so please keep your hearts coming until November 9th. If you haven't had a chance to join in the fun, each heart takes only five to ten minutes. That's five minutes to stop, take a breath and help us weave more connections in the c...ommunity. Read how to crochet and send us your hearts: https://opensupport.org.au/take-five-minutes-to-create-a-c/

14.01.2022 The rain is subsiding and the weather is heating up! Why not revamp your wardrobe with some of our new summer pieces? All purchases made via the Open Support Gift Shop assist us to continue to support the vulnerable in the community. You can find us in the foyer at St Vincent’s Clinic in Darlinghurst, Sydney (Level 4, 438 Victoria Street, Darlinghurst).

12.01.2022 Take a moment to read about how the Federal Government is being urged to take "urgent and immediate" action to address a visa that traps foreign parents in Australia with restrictions the UN says have a "serious impact" on human rights. https://www.abc.net.au//call-for-action-over-aust/12832666

12.01.2022 Today is World’s Children Day, a global day of action for children. Did you know, children are present in 1 out of 3 family violence cases reported to the police? At Open Support we have a dedicated Children’s Trauma Practitioner who provides them with the targeted support they need to come out the other side stronger and better equipped to deal with past trauma.

12.01.2022 When victims of domestic violence come through our doors, we first attend to their immediate needs: their safety, their health, and access to legal and financial support. But what comes next? Beyond the point of crisis, women need time to get back on their feet, learn how to regain confidence along with emotional and financial independence. This is why Open Support provides transitional accommodation to domestic violence survivors. Living in their own space means our clients can re-establish a home and fill it with love. The privacy and security gives them a chance to rebuild a family life with their children. It gives them the opportunity to empower themselves toward a safe and independent future.

08.01.2022 This World Kindness Day, our wonderful Open Support staff share their most recent acts of kindness. What kind acts have you witnessed in your community in recent months? We’d love to hear your stories in the comments below!

07.01.2022 A big thank you to AMP Foundation for awarding Open Support $80,000 to support Women and Children escaping Domestic and Family Violence. Open Support is among 23 charities to share in $2 million in AMP Foundation COVID-19 Community Boost grants to help them support Australians through these challenging times. The funding will be used for an additional case worker to provide holistic outreach support for women and their children escaping domestic and family violence. Many c...harities are experiencing the challenge of supporting Australians through a period of enormous economic and social disruption while also dealing with substantial losses of income from fundraising events that have been cancelled, trying to meet increased demand on their services, as well as having to work through new service delivery solutions that need to be delivered online, said Helen Liondos, Head of AMP Foundation. The non-profit sector is displaying extraordinary resilience and resourcefulness to meet this demand. The AMP Foundation is proud to support 23 remarkable organisations, including Open Support that are doing their utmost to support the community at this time of great need. See more

01.01.2022 Last month our friends at Sovereign Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem (SHOSJ), hosted a literary lunch for Open Support. As a result of their hard efforts, they raised over $22,000 that will help domestic violence survivors access a safe haven. A massive thank you SHOSJ for their wonderful work and commitment!
