23.01.2022 Winter Sesshin 2018 What a blessing to practice together And to honour Peter Genjo’s closing teisho, amidst the busy-ness of life, we will always remember the one who is not busy
23.01.2022 The greater our awakening, the more clearly do we see the reality of our own sinful ignorance. The more our soul is sublimated, the more we feel real awe. Then we become selflessly modest and able to shed an unknown tear for the cruelties and wilfulness of the human karmic condition. This tear, which springs from the innermost sensitivity of life itself, flows into the original ocean of compassion; it wells up into our human desert to moisten and render the earth green. This one tear can never dry up; it streams forever, penetrating the ten directions of our endless past and future; it is the tear of Buddha, the blood of Christ, Beethoven's Prayer, the soul of each one of us. ~ Hogen Yamahata

15.01.2022 When or where can Love be an achievement? Love is never achieved or finished with; it is eternal. The work with ignorance and cruelty is, therefore, unending. We should never cease to work or to love. There is always a higher mountain beyond the one we just climbed; there are always deeper rivers to cross. We can only penetrate the mountains and rivers, and enter into the ultimate work of our everyday lives, by immeasurable love. ~ Excerpt from "On The Open Way" by Master Hogen-san
11.01.2022 BUDDHA IS YOUR DAILY LIFE If you can chant the Buddhist teachings while having a meal you are very lucky. The policeman has to have breakfast in order to chase thieves; pickpocket gets up in the morning and has breakfast in order to steal ten dollar bills from pockets of others. Breakfast is breakfast, but its world is represented in different ways by different individuals. If you have breakfast to offer your body and mind to the Buddha, to the universe, how lucky you are. Of...fering your body and mind to the Buddha is offering your body and mind to emptiness, or in other words, to the pure sense of human action. People misunderstand and misuse Buddhism. If you study Buddhism thinking that it will help you, that means you use Buddhism for your ego, for selfishness. No matter how long you do this, it is egocentric practice. If you continue to practice like this you will never be satisfied, because desire is endless. When the Dharma is close to you, you do not feel satisfied. When the Dharma is far from you, then you feel satisfied. This is important. If you take only one small step into the study of anything, physics, psychology, Zen, then you feel happy. But the deeper you go, the more you realise you do not feel satisfied. Whatever you do, not only in Buddhism but in life in general, if you are close to human life you do not feel satisfied. There is always something you have to do. As you move toward the future, studying and developing, the more deeply you enter into something the more unsatisfied you feel. This is very natural. The same is true for Buddhist practice. So do not use Buddhism for yourself. Offer your body and mind to the Buddha-Dharma. Buddha is not divine. Buddha is your daily life. - excerpt from Returning To Silence by Dainin Katagiri - image from www.exeas.org/resources/photos/teahouse.jpg
