25.01.2022 Socialising puppies is about the most important thing you can do for them. Having two dogs that can teach young dogs what is and is not appropriate is a blessing. No matter how good a trainer you are, there are some skills best taught by another dog.

22.01.2022 This time last year I was sitting at LAX pretty much bathing in my own ego thinking about the huge year I’d had and bragging about being fully booked for 2020. Well shit...... things turned out pretty different than expected. Through all the turmoil and bullshit I feel like I managed to keep moving forward personally and professionally. I got back on the tools and took on random pet clients who forced me to rethink the way I teach basic concepts to people who don’t just beli...eve and take my word for things. I was able to transition to a more online focus for getting my content out there while I couldn’t leave my state. I’ve been able to spend time as a student again and have been exposed to some concepts that will radically change the way I train in the future and when I get back to teaching I’ll be able to plug holes in knowledge and skill that I couldn’t have before. In doing all this I’ve had to work harder than ever. But I still feel like hard work is the smallest ingredient in everything I do. Lots of people put in the work. Everyone knows you have to grind. The truth is I have been incredibly lucky. More importantly I have been supported by others. Friends, family, colleagues and clients have all helped me keep my head above water this year. At times I’ve felt genuinely overwhelmed with love and gratitude for all the people in my life. All through my life, luck has put me in the right place at the right time to meet the people who would mentor and coach me along the way. Selflessly giving me what ever I needed not just to keep focused in the right direction but to keep moving forward in a way that when I look back I feel good about every step I’ve taken along the way. My only hope is that I’m able to pass on that kindness to others. See more

21.01.2022 Everything old can be new again. Before I teach any new skill I usually check that all the foundation skills I’ll be building on are where I need them to be. I’m checking my control over head position off the field and in an environment where he’d rather see what he’s walking on.

17.01.2022 The e-collar is one of the most misunderstood tools we have in dog training. Intuitively its a stopping tool. But it can be so much more than that. Of course at the high levels it can be used to create pain. But there’s a whole spectrum of functions it can be given before that. I’m missing teaching people how to use it properly at seminars and events but I’m lucky to have opportunities like these to teach it in video calls to people all over the world. One of my happiest moments was at an event in America where an attendee told me she had been secretly filming to gather evidence to use in the ban of the ecollar, but having seen the way I taught the use of them was now a convert and was excited to get started with her own dog. Education is the key!

16.01.2022 Before you start training behaviours you need a way to tell the dog what he has done is correct and a way to deliver a reinforcer that makes him more likely to do it again. This is a clicker loaded and ready for action.
