23.01.2022 One of the highlights of our planting trip last week was seeing the Posidonia meadows of Port Stephens in bloom!!! This event only occurs once a year, around spring time. Flowering is one of the characteristics shared by seagrasses that make them 'true plants' and very different to seaweeds. Read on to learn more... Simple seaweeds (algae) first evolved in the oceans over 1.5 BILLION years ago! ... Eventually, some of these organisms made their way onto land and became vascular plants, around 500 million years ago. These plants slowly developed more complex structures like roots, leaves and FLOWERS. It wasn't until 100 million years ago that these land plants adapted BACK into the ocean to become the first seagrasses! These pretty flowers we see in seagrass meadows today are signs of a very long evolutionary journey - all to end up back in the ocean.

21.01.2022 Have you been wondering what Operation Posidonia is doing during the lockdown? Here is an example! We have a lot of videos to process and data to analyse and this is the best time to do it.... In this short footage you can see a predation experiment: we use small pieces of squid (called squid pops) to measure predation in different sites. It looks like these leatherjackets are enjoying it!! #fish #predation #marine #seagrass #posidonia #tasty #squid #portstephens #nsw #fisheries

18.01.2022 Next Tuesday Operation Posidonia co-founder, Associate Professor Adriana Vergés is talking all about seagrass and seaweed restoration for the Mid Coast council's Marine Catchment and Discovery Series. If you'd like to listen in, make sure you book online via the link below, and install zoom on your device. See you there!... https://www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au//Marine-Catchment-Discover

18.01.2022 Our favourite videographers Harriet Spark and Richard Woodgett from Grumpy Turtle Creative are finalists in the Frankie Magazine Good Stuff Awards for a beautiful film about our sister project Operation Crayweed ! You can watch the film here: https://vimeo.com/368173837 and if you love it you can vote for us in the People's Choice awards here: https://bit.ly/2DzVaao

16.01.2022 Update from the field team @madelainelangley @juliaferros @operationposidonia Our fragments are looking very good!!

13.01.2022 OPERATION POSIDONIA ANNOUNCEMENT Operation Posidonia is planning one last planting event for 2020!! We want to plant as MANY shoots as possible. If you have always wanted to go collecting but never got around to it, this is your last chance (for now!).... Drop your shoots off at The Anchorage Marina Soon, we will be drawing our focus away from Port Stephens, and looking to expand to other estuaries in NSW where Posidonia is endangered.......

13.01.2022 Check out this incredible baked creation by Von Sebastian to mark #ThreatenedSpeciesDay: it features our beautiful but threatened Posidonia australis #seagrass meadows and one of the main causes for their damage today: boat moorings. This is part of #TSBakeOff - check out the other entries as they are all amazing!

12.01.2022 Happy Earth Day from us! Even if we are facing a new and challenging situation we can still do our bit to make this planet a better place! You can find short courses, conservation conversations and citizen science on https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2020/ We can't wait to go back into the water to check our restoration and to plant more Posidonia! In the meantime Operation Posidonia is working on the data collected in 2019.... Stay tuned!

10.01.2022 Spring has sprung and we are going gardening!! This week we will be planting beach-collected Posidonia fragments into old boat mooring scars in Shoal Bay. They are looking beautiful! This will be one of our last seagrass planting trips in Port Stephens before we start taking our project to other estuaries

10.01.2022 We are so excited to be working alongside the Gamay Rangers - Botany Bay to bring our Posidonia restoration project to Gamay!! Watch this great piece ABC Landline filmed recently, showcasing some of the important work, and iconic species of this incredibly resilient estuary in the heart of Australia's biggest city.

09.01.2022 It's that time of year again.... There is currently an East Coast Low bringing strong winds to much of the NSW coast, including the Port Stephens region There will be plenty of sand, seaweed and SEAGRASS washing up on our beaches!!... It's hard to predict whether there will be much Posidonia around Port Stephens, as the winds will be blowing towards to northern side of the harbour... but keep an eye out! We are still regularly collecting fragment donations left at The Anchorage Marina, in preparation for our next big planting event in August. Even if you're located closer to other coastal estuaries like Lake Macquarie, Pittwater, Sydney Harbour or Botany Bay, why not rug up and go Posidonia hunting!

09.01.2022 Thanks for the shout out Waste-Ed

05.01.2022 We're slowly getting back to business here at Operation Posidonia! Yesterday some of our team members went for a windy walk in Salamander Bay to collect some freshly beached Posidonia fragments. Back at Taylors Beach, PhD student Giulia Ferretto analysed the photosynthetic activity of the new fragments using our submersible PAM ... We are still welcoming seagrass fragment donations and regularly checking the collection point at The Anchorage. If you're out collecting please follow social distancing regulations!

05.01.2022 WEATHER REPORT This week's forecast for Port Stephens includes northerly winds, strong tides, and SUNSHINE....the perfect conditions for Posidonia collection We expect plenty of shoots to be washing up on north facing beaches like Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Bagnalls and Salamander Bay. Collection is best at the start of the outgoing tide (between 9am-12pm tomorrow) so fragments aren't left drying on the beach for too long.... Happy first day of Spring!

04.01.2022 Where there is seagrass, there are CRABS! Today we visited the Gamay Rangers - Botany Bay to talk about some of our favourite critters in the bay. We are looking forward to future collaborations ... Thanks Prof. Ian Suthers, Sam Nolan, Dan Hewitt and Rosh Hanamseth for also sharing your knowledge with us.

04.01.2022 When Operation Posidonia PhD student Giulia Ferretto is not revegetating old mooring scars in Shoal Bay, she can be found studying the effects of different oyster farming infrastructure on Posidonia. Installed by local Port Stephens oyster farmer, Paul North, this small oyster farm has been purpose built to showcase three popular styles of oyster aquaculture - floating baskets, long-line baskets, and trays. Giulia will study the interaction between each style of basket/tray and the surrounding Posidonia meadow. We hope the results will reveal the most sustainable way to conduct oyster farming while minimising damage to the seagrass meadows that underpin estuarine ecosystems

02.01.2022 It's time for @nationalscienceweek!!!! This year the Sydney Science Trail has gone virtual, making it easier than ever to find out about all of the wonderful science projects happening around us. Find our sister project Operation Crayweed in the 'plant' section of the trail and play our brand new game. Your mission... to help Reggie the crayfish find a home!... www.sydneysciencetrail.net.au
