05.01.2022 HOW DOES HOARDING AND SQUALOR RELATE TO FIRE FIGHTING? It is sad but true, today Australian homes face the threat of fire on a scale we have never witnessed before. Our thoughts, hearts, and best wishes go to all those under threat and fighting the fires. Firefighters have shown beyond human resilience and fortitude to continue to battle the fires and ultimately save lives, homes, and wildlife in the process.... Did you know that every 4 6 days MFB firefighters respond to a fire or other types of emergency in a residential property where hoarding and/or squalor is present.?* Fire risk via the accumulation of possessions results in an abnormally high fuel load and greater opportunity for ignition. What is squalor? Squalor is an unsanitary living environment that has arisen from extreme/prolonged neglect. It poses substantial health and safety risks to people or animals residing in the affected premises as well as others in the community. Hoarding What is hoarding? Hoarding is the persistent accumulation of and lack of ability to relinquish large numbers of objects or living animals. It results in extreme clutter in and around premises, compromising the intended use of premises and threatens the health and safety of people concerned, animals and neighbors. Hoarding is a progressive and chronic condition. Hoarding and squalor can exist in isolation or at the same time. The effects of hoarding can be apparent inside or outside the house or a combination of both. Commonly hoarded items include personal papers, newspapers, clothing, furniture, appliances, household rubbish, animals and hard rubbish. Over Christmas we caught up with a friend who was previously a firefighter. We were explaining what CleanAbilities does and specifically the type of cleaning operations we undertake. He commended us on the nature of our cleaning and advised us that squalor and hoarding cause more fires than we hear about. He went on to say that preparing your home for risk of fire, whether you are in the country or city, should always be a priority to remain safe. Our friend Pat wasn’t kidding. Pat and the attached Victorian MFB statistics, drive home the point that whilst fires rage in our countryside, there is more we can do to prevent fires within the homes of those who may struggle with acopia or hoarding.
