25.01.2022 Doctor: it’s not a stress fracture {mansplains the difference between bone and muscle} Me: okay well here are all the reasons why it is. ... Doctor: I’m sure it’s not Me: let the x-ray decide Doctor: I’ll refer you just so we can eliminate it. {Results come in} Doctor: so it does look like there’s a subtle line on your x-ray Me: almost exactly like a stress fracture. {also me: loving being right SO MUCH, I almost forgot I can’t run for 6 weeks} This was me on my last run on Tuesday when I pulled the plug after 5km because I just felt off. Stress fractures usually come from under-eating or from big changes in training or surface. Neither of those things are issues I have but I think the huge emotional and mental stressors of this year have just left me under-recovered for my usual training. I’m giving myself the weekend to wallow and then in Monday I’ll be at the gym doing whatever adapted training I can and hitting the pool. 22.01.2022 How you do anything, is how you do everything, including this non-running business. When you have been doing something for a long while, like I have with running, you build a confidence, a sense of safety. And that confidence allows you to do other things that are outside of your comfort zone. But when it’s not on offer, everything is outside your comfort zone. And it reminds you how hard beginning was at the start. There could be plenty of reasons to put it in the too hard... basket and do nothing, but no good reasons. And the person that running taught you that you could be is the person who sees an opportunity.

22.01.2022 You wouldn’t know when I put off running this morning in the pouring rain that it would be this nice later on. Sometimes you do get lucky! I always find the recovery run before rest day the perfect reward for hard work through the week.

22.01.2022 Kevin Bacon pre-cutting banana so it doesn’t go brown while being whisper-quiet so he doesn’t wake Kyra, who apparently has expectations of cake and sliced banana when she wakes up is exactly the kind of energy 2021 needs https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSJJgn44r/

20.01.2022 Or cardio, depending on how long it takes you

18.01.2022 A great read on the posturing within body positivity when you are too privileged to be impacted by diet culture

16.01.2022 Caught an Osprey in flight today. I’ve been a bit quiet as I get all my ducks in a row. University starts in a couple of weeks, new virtual assistant contract starts now and very soon I’ll start in person sessions in Alstonville on a Tuesday and a Friday morning. So it’s a lot. The running has been happening, but less talking about the running This morning as I ran up to the end of the North Wall there was a killer headwind and rain spitting teeny little rain bullets into ...my face and I kind of thought about turning around before the end of the wall. It seemed silly not to go to the end though. As I turned, some other brave all weather runner smiled at me NOW we get the easy part. I mean sure it’s a slog, but sooner or later you are flying.

14.01.2022 It’s #longrunday snd I had my longest run in about five months with zero leg niggles I shall now celebrate with all the coffee.

13.01.2022 Good weather for volunteering at #parkrun this morning

12.01.2022 I love this read from Lindsay Crouse on how revolutionary it is to start training without the assumed goal of taking up less space. https://www.nytimes.com//22/opin/rbg-ginsburg-fitness.html

12.01.2022 Last week I had the absolute pleasure of having Nicole from Planning With Kids on to talk all things running, life juggling and how she’s been managing in Melbourne lockdown. We also talked about her new project: Adapt drinks. Check it out (and get your pre-orders in!) https://opmove.com/plan-train-adapt-marathon-training/

11.01.2022 In this episode of the podcast I'm talking to Ness Hartge about running a 6 day, 250km stage race (but she did it in 5 days). We talk about why the term 'virtual race' is a really uncomfortable way of describing something and also all about her experience running this event locally. Look, I won't lie there are a few tangents about how much Covid sucks and how much we love carbs, but it's all good. ... https://opmove.com/podcast-episode-134-ultra-race-romania-b

09.01.2022 Does syncing up your breathing with your stride make you more efficient? Probably not, it’s probably just something that happens as you get more experience running. So this can be one of those things that you get to put in the don’t worry about basket and focus on something else whether it be running consistency, strength training or mobility.... https://www.outsideonline.com//synchronized-breathing-runn

08.01.2022 This is why I felt conflicted finishing GVRAT and although some of the affiliated races next year like Backyard Blister look fun I won’t be participating. It’s easy to dress up oppression and call it neutrality. https://www.runnersworld.com//ben-chan-great-virtual-race/

07.01.2022 Does anyone have any massage gun recommendations? I’ve been looking at the Black Friday sales but currently totally overwhelmed by all the options!!Does anyone have any massage gun recommendations? 06.01.2022 A lot of times you can think about a PB as one number. But running isn’t so much what you can do once, in perfect conditions - but what can you do consistently. Instead of looking at your PB as one number, start thinking if it as your top five average. Not what can you do once, but what can you reliably do five times. Today I had a tempo ladder of 10,8,6,4,2 minutes with 2 minutes walking recovery between each which given how warm it’s getting I was very grateful for!... I didn’t have high hopes for this run after an emotional week, but you just show up and see what your body feels like doing.

05.01.2022 Learn to Run started today (don't worry, I can still sneak you in this week if you are keen!) but here are my other dates for the year, just in case you wanted to get your planning pants on. opmove.com/learn-to-run/

02.01.2022 Your Friday probably needs this

02.01.2022 Friday always looks better when you start with an easy run Is it time for an extra big coffee?

01.01.2022 The long run recovery bed model. I could get behind this

01.01.2022 To cross an ocean You must love the ocean Before you love the far shore.... - Suzanne Buffam Words that have given me more than a small amount of strength over the last week. Grief is hard and sneaky and uncompromising. And you have to give yourself permission to know that just because you feel your mistakes and your undone words and actions hollowing you out, that doesn’t define you or your relationship. Pain only hurts. It’s what you do next that could be transformative.
