25.01.2022 It’s the moment so many of our wonderful supporters have been waiting for our PRESTON op shop will be reopening this Monday the 15th of June! The store will be open from 9.30am 4pm, Monday to Friday, and practicing the same social distancing and hygiene procedures as Knighton Ave, Fullarton Rd and Sunshine. We thank you for the patience you’ve shown as our volunteers have worked hard to get the store ready, and we can’t wait to welcome you back in! Come check it out at 6...6-68 Oakover Road, Preston from Monday onwards. *Please note we are working hard to ensure we can safely reopen at our other sites, and at this stage we have not locked in any dates for when that may be. For now, we sincerely thank you for supporting us at Knighton Ave, Fullarton Road, Sunshine and (shortly) our Preston stores, and remember to keep checking this page for updates.

25.01.2022 To all our wonderful op shoppers and pantry clients, Please note that our stores and Community Pantries will be closed this Monday, 8th of June for the Queen’s Birthday public holiday. Knighton Ave, Fullarton Rd, Sunshine, and our pantries will be open as usual on Tuesday. Have a happy and safe long weekend and we’ll see you all soon!

25.01.2022 A reminder to all our customers that the Preston, Sunshine, Fullarton Road and Knighton Avenue stores are open on Saturdays for your weekend op shop fix! These stores all trade from 10am - 4pm on a Saturday, except for Knighton Avenue (Gaye’s Vintage Shop) which is open from 10am - 1pm. Thank you all for your support during our reopening and we hope you score a great op shop find this weekend!

24.01.2022 A huge thank you to Rotary Club of Strathmore and Rotary International for their generous donation of $1000 worth of stock for our Community Pantry, as part of their community service. Coronavirus, and the subsequent panic buying and increased demand for food aid, has meant staples are hard to come by. The most in demand - and hardest to source - items in our pantry right now are pasta, pasta sauces, rice, and breakfast cereals. This generous donation from Rotary has already ...made a huge difference to the hundreds of families who rely on our aid program and are just trying to get quick, budget-friendly meals on the table during these stressful times. With more people out of work (or unable to work due to illness, home school or carer responsibilities) the demand for help through our Community Pantry has not slowed down, and we are asking our wonderful community for their assistance in keeping our pantry shelves stocked. Fullarton Road, Sunshine and Knighton (Gaye's Vintage) op shops have all reopened, and if everyone who shopped with us brought just one pack of rice or a jar of pasta sauce when they popped in it would make a world of difference. Rotary have been incredibly generous with their $1000 donation of stock, but every individual can do their little bit and collectively make a big difference. If you are able to help, donations can be dropped off at our Fullarton Road, Sunshine, or Knighton Avenue stores. Thank you.

22.01.2022 With the government easing restrictions on June 1st and with a lot of careful consideration about the wellbeing of our customers and volunteers, we have decided to open up our KNIGHTON AVENUE (Gaye’s Vintage Shop) op shop this Monday, June 1st from 10am. For now the store will operate Monday Friday, 10am 4pm (no Saturday trading) and the same safety precautions will be in place as in our other stores Perspex screens at counters, social distancing, and hand sanitizer av...ailable for use. Knighton is one of our smaller shops, so we thank you in advance for your patience and adherence to social distancing as you navigate your way through and in and out of the shop. Our wonderful volunteers are looking forward to safely welcoming you back and giving our customers greater access to low cost clothing, books, toys and other daily essential items.

20.01.2022 While our stores may be closed, our Sunshine and Airport West sites remain open to run the Community Pantries and to accept your preloved goods. Just like last time, this lockdown is a great opportunity to clear out the cupboards and support your local charity with quality donations of clothing, linen, furniture and other household items. Our Material Aid program is still running so we are always in need of these items to support families doing it tough, and we have set up a contactless donation station to ensure everyone’s safety. As always please refrain from dumping at our other sites or outside of opening hours instead visit us at 85 Hampshire Road, Sunshine, or 492 Fullarton Road, Airport West between 10am 3.30pm where our volunteers will gratefully accept your items.

18.01.2022 Today we reopened our doors at Fullarton Road and our wonderful community turned up to access low cost winter clothing, blankets, books, eggs, toys and desks for kids, and other iso essentials. We want to thank everyone for practicing social distancing, using hand sanitiser, and being kind and patient to one another (and to our volunteers). It was so nice to see your smiling faces and your response made us feel as though now was the right time to reopen. Thanks to these l...ovely people who left feedback for us on our Instagram page too follow us over there at @hhmission for more store updates, and we’ll see you all tomorrow from 10am! *Note: Fullarton Road is currently our only store that has reopened. Please follow this page or find us on Instagram for future updates on the other stores.*

14.01.2022 In light of the Premier’s announcements this afternoon, all Helping Hands Mission op shops have temporarily closed as of 4pm today. While the news of another lockdown is upsetting to us all, we understand the importance of closing our doors for non-essential visits in order to keep our team and the broader community safe. We will be following the Premier’s announcements closely and at this stage our plan is to close the op shops for the next two weeks, then review the situati...on. All updates will be posted to this page, our Instagram page and our website. Please note, our Community Pantries will continue to operate we know our Emergency Aid program is more crucial than ever during this time and we will keep providing fresh, frozen and non-perishable goods to those in need every week. Bookings for the Pantry can be made by calling us on 1300 892 010. This has been a long and difficult past few months, particularly for those in our community who are experiencing financial hardship, and we want to make sure everyone knows we are here to help. We ask you all to help spread this message by sharing this post with family and friends because like we said last time around - we are all in this together!

13.01.2022 Today’s announcement of 288 new COVID-19 cases is a devastating blow to Victoria. As an organisation we have a duty of care to protect not only the staff and volunteers who run this charity, but also those who visit our sites to donate and to attend the Community Pantry. While our shops have all closed, there are still many people at our Sunshine and Airport West site each day, exposing each other and our team to more human contact as well as contact through donated items and... boxes and bags. As a result, today we have made the decision to temporarily stop accepting donations at our sites, effective immediately. We have also made the difficult decision to close the Community Pantries for two weeks, with the last client being seen on Friday the 17th of July. All pantry clients who are already booked in for appointments after this date will be contacted over the next few days to reschedule, and we will be fitting in extra appointments next week for these clients to ensure they have plenty of food before we close. As you can tell from our previous posts this week, this decision is certainly not one we thought we would be making today, and not one we have made lightly. In the past five or so months since this pandemic really took hold in Australia, we have kept our pantry doors open the whole way through and worked really hard to do so. This week we have had many calls from clients telling us they are not comfortable leaving their homes even to come to the Pantry and we know that most of them will understand why we’ve had to make this choice. We will take this day by day and watch what happens with the case numbers over the next two weeks, and as always we will post any updates to this page and our website. This has been a really hard call to make as we know how important the Pantry has been during COVID-19, but we know now we have a greater responsibility to do our part for the community and our Helping Hands family and ensure our two sites are not places where people can be exposed to, or pass on, the virus.

13.01.2022 *Fullarton Road op shop re-opening* To our Helping Hands Mission family, With a lot of careful consideration, we have decided to reopen the doors to our op shop at 492 Fullarton Road, Airport West, this coming Monday the 4th of May. The shop will be running on a reduced timetable Monday to Friday 10am 4pm. Saturdays at this stage will remain closed. ... Over the last four weeks, we have been inundated with calls for support. We have worked really hard to keep the doors to all three of our Community Pantries open and our Material Aid program continues to operate providing families with access to furniture, whitegoods, bedding and household goods. Every day we take calls from people asking about clothing and we know now more than ever many in the community need access to warm winter clothing, linen and sleepwear. We originally closed our doors to keep our customers, clients and volunteers safe and we don’t take the decision to reopen lightly. Throughout the store we now have signage reminding customers of the importance of social distancing, hand sanitiser stations, Perspex screens and gloves available at the front counter. Our older volunteers and those considered high risk will continue to remain at home, and we have put in place a more thorough cleaning process for our front counter and toilets. The dining room remains closed in line with government rulings and we will closely monitor the number of people in the shop at any one time. Please remember we are happy to receive donations particularly warm clothing from baby sizes right through to adult sizes and warm linen. As always, if there is someone you know who is doing things a little tough, please let them know they are welcome to contact us on 1300 892 010 to arrange an appointment for our Community Pantry. Please note at this stage it is only our Fullarton Road site that is reopening. All other Helping Hands Mission Op Shops will remain closed until further notice.

13.01.2022 Thank you so much to all those in our community who have supported the reopening of our Sunshine, Preston, Bridgewater, Knighton Avenue and Fullarton Road op shops in our first week back! It has been a huge couple of days for our teams and we have loved seeing all your faces. All Melbourne sites will be closed this Tuesday the 3rd of November for the Melbourne Cup public holiday, to give our volunteers a quick break before another busy week. Bridgewater will remain open on Tu...esday. A reminder that the following locations have reopened. We will provide updates about other sites as soon as we have them for you. - Sunshine and Fullarton Road: 10am 4pm, Monday Saturday. - Preston: 9.30am 4pm weekdays, 10am 4pm Saturday. - Knighton Avenue: 10am 4pm weekdays, 10am 1pm Saturday. - Bridgewater on Loddon: Tuesday to Friday, 10am 4pm. - Fullarton Road Community Pantry: Reopening Monday 2nd November; appointments must be set by calling 1300 892 010.

11.01.2022 We remain committed to the people of Bridgewater on Loddon and surrounds in supporting them through this tough time. We are all affected by the closure of businesses and the reduced stock levels on shelves and this is especially true in small country towns. Our Community Pantry (on the same site as our op shop) is still open and providing access to food for those in need on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm. No appointment necessary just pop in to 11 Main Street, Bridgewater on Loddon (the old church) and our friendly volunteers will be there to assist you. Please note that while the op shop itself is closed, we are still gratefully accepting your quality donations at the door. We encourage you to share this post and tag or message those who would benefit from our Emergency Aid services.

10.01.2022 It’s National Volunteer Week and in 2020 this week looks very different some of our op shops are still closed and we have not been able to welcome back all of our wonderful team at this stage. For so many of our volunteers, giving their time to the charity is a big part of their week and we know that lockdown has been really hard for them they miss their friends, customers, and the sense of purpose that volunteering provides. Right now we may not be able to be together as we usually are, but this week we are reflecting on the incredible support that volunteers have given Helping Hands Mission since 2007, and their unwavering support in our efforts to protect and reopen the charity. Happy National Volunteers week to our volunteering family thank you for your dedication, stay safe, and we hope we can see you soon.

09.01.2022 With 532 new COVID-19 cases, and sadly 6 more deaths, announced in Victoria today we have again had to make some difficult choices for the safety of our staff, volunteers, pantry clients and customers. While our aim was to reopen our Community Pantries on Monday the 3rd of August, we will now delay that opening date and remain closed for at least a further week. Our goal is always to get back on site as soon as possible but we will be closely monitoring the numbers each day a...nd waiting for a clear down trend before we ask our team to return. This is not the news we were hoping to share with you all, and 500+ cases is certainly not what anyone wanted to hear today. It’s a tough message to have to post but we are so grateful for how understanding you have all been during these difficult times. We will keep you informed as soon as we have any further information and all updates will be posted to this page, on Instagram and on our website. Thank you.

08.01.2022 Helping Hands Mission Inc. Op Shop Update Following on from yesterday’s announcements regarding the lockdown of suburbs, we will be temporarily closing our Fullarton Road and Knighton Avenue (Gaye’s Vintage) op shops at 4pm today. As both of these shops are located in Airport West (3042), it is important that we play our part to keep our staff, volunteers and our broader community safe. Our Community Pantry in Airport West will remain open but we will once again shift to ...distributing pre-packaged food hampers to reduce contact. We will also continue to accept donations at Fullarton Road and our eggs will be available for purchase from our carpark. Many of you know that our Sunshine and Preston op shops have reopened. As neither of these sites are in lockdown suburbs they will continue to trade. We look forward to your understanding and once again can’t wait to welcome you back.

08.01.2022 In early April, Moonee Valley City Council threw us a lifeline through a partnership agreement an offer of $20,000 to help keep our Community Pantry in Airport West running when the local community needed it most. At a time when we had just closed down our stores and therefore the source of funding for our Emergency and Material Aid programs and we were wondering how we would get through this crisis, it was a HUGE relief to have the backing of our local Council. With ...this support we’ve been able to keep feeding the 3,000 people who now rely on our pantries and keep up with the 65% increase in pantry bookings that we’ve seen over the last 5 weeks. It’s also helped us keep our truck on the road, picking up from supermarkets and food rescue organisations each day. A huge thank you to Moonee Valley City Council for helping to keep a local charity going and others through their COVID-19 Recovery Grants (more info here: https://mvcc.vic.gov.au/how-do-i/apply/grants) - we truly appreciate it and we know that those who rely on our services do too.
