01.01.2022 #challengeaccepted @hillarybuckman This photo is not a photo of me but #KylieMooreGilbert What a great opportunity to raise awareness of Australias Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert a Middle East expert at the University of Melbournes Asia institute specialising in the Arab Gulf States. Moore-Gilbert has been in jail in Iran since September 2018. Moore-Gilbert was invited to attend a conference in Iran in 2018 aat the conclusion of the conference she was arrested at Tehran Internation...al airport allegedly on charges of espionage. It is alleged because actually, no one knows on what basis Moore-Gilbert was arrested and subsequently convicted of. She was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment at Evin Prison and has been in solitary confinement, sleeping on a concrete floor for the last 2 years. She has had to endure lights on 24 hours a day without medical attention, adequate food or phone calls to her family. This treatment is cruel and inhumane but it has become even worse. Earlier this week, MooreGilbert was moved to Qarchak prison as punishment for forming a protest choir with other inmates at the prison. Qarchak prison was labelled by the US Department of State as being responsible for gross violations of internationally recognised human rights, extrajudicial killings and torture. While this week a spokeswoman from DFAT said, "Dr Moore-Gilberts case is one of the Australian Governments highest priorities, including for our embassy officials in Tehran", in the words of Jason Rezaian, an American journalist once a prisoner in the same wing at Evin prison, ultimately governments tend to act in these cases when there is a public uproar Others need to force the issue first. Peter Greste, UNESCO chair in journalism and communication at the University of Queensland, wrote surely the time has come to shift gears and get shouty to ramp up public pressure on both Australian diplomats and Iranian politicians. While you may think that governments dont give a damn about Twitter, Facebook or Human Rights Watch, this public outcry is exactly what gets the politicians notice and keeps them focused. Well then. Lets not make some noise, lets ROAR. #roarforkylie
