23.01.2022 In 1978, a 1 in 20 year flood ripped through the Shoalhaven. With it went a lot of the coastal and river bank vegetation. A professional fisherman by the name of Charlie Weir started an organisation in the early 1980s to help rehabilitate the river. As a fisherman Charlie saw the impacts of his industry on the environment and realised the importance of mangroves for river health and fish habitat. Over time Charlie, a passionate advocate for the environment, propagated and p...lanted over 100,000 mangroves and 25,000 casuarina trees along more than seven kilometres of the Shoalhaven riverbank. Here you can see, almost 40 years on, the fruits of his labour.
