24.01.2022 Remind yourself and your loved ones to stay hydrated at all times! Drinking plenty of water is very important for good health. Water is an essential part of a healthy balanced diet because the body relies on it to function properly. Between 50% and 80% of the human body is made up of water. To stay hydrated, its important to drink before you feel thirsty. This is especially important if you are exercising or if its a hot day. Even if youre not thirsty, try to drink water ...regularly throughout the day. You can stay hydrated by: Always carrying a water bottle with you. Choosing water rather than tea, coffee or drinks that contain caffeine these make you go to the toilet more regularly and so make you more dehydrated. Keeping chilled water in the fridge on hot days. Flavouring water with lemon, strawberries or mint to add flavour. Always having water on the table when youre eating. #OptimalHealth #MedicalCentre #Health #Reminder

18.01.2022 Australia has one of the highest melanoma rates in the world. But what is Melanoma? Melanoma is a form of cancer that develops in the skins pigment cells (melanocytes). Melanocytes produce melanin to help protect the skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation i.e. sunlight. When melanocyte cells aggregate together in the skin during childhood or adolescence they form a mole. The first symptom of a melanoma is usually the appearance of a new spot, or a change in an existing freckle... or mole. The change may be in size, shape or colour and is normally noticed over several weeks or months. To prevent melanoma, you have to practice sun safety at all times (especially with children). This means avoiding exposure to the sun during the hottest parts of the day, as well as protecting your skin with sunscreen, clothing and a hat whenever youre outside (even on cloudy days). The best way to monitor changes on your skin is by taking photographs every few months and comparing them to identify any changes. React quickly if you see something growing and/or changing. #OptimalHealth #MedicalCentre #HealthInformation #Melanoma

17.01.2022 Measles is a viral disease that may have serious complications. It is usually spread when a person breathes in the measles virus that has been coughed or sneezed into the air by an infectious person. The first symptoms are fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose, sore red eyes and feeling unwell. A few days later a rash appears. The rash starts on the face, spreads down to the body and lasts for 4-7 days. The rash is not itchy. Young children (especially infants) may also experi...ence diarrhoea. Up to a third of people with measles have complications. These include ear infections, diarrhoea, and pneumonia, and may require hospitalisation. About one in every 1000 people with measles develops encephalitis (swelling of the brain). The best protection against measles is immunisation with two doses of measles containing vaccine, given at least 4 weeks apart. You can contact the practice at 4647 1133 if you want to be protected against measles. #OptimalHealth #MedicalCentre #Immunisation

14.01.2022 Looking after your mental health during the coronavirus outbreak is important. Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. Fear and anxiety about a disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults and children. Coping with stress will make you, the people you care about, and your community stronger. Here are some things you can do to support yourself:... Try to maintain perspective. While it is reasonable for people to be concerned about the outbreak of coronavirus, try to remember that medical, scientific and public health experts around the world are working hard to contain the virus, treat those affected and develop a vaccine as quickly as possible. Try to maintain a practical and calm approach. Widespread panic can complicate efforts to manage the outbreak effectively. Do your best to stay calm and follow official advice, particularly around observing good hygiene habits. Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting. Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs. Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy. Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling. Its normal to feel overwhelmed by news of the outbreak, particularly if you have experienced mental health issues before. Acknowledge feelings of distress and seek further professional support if required. #OptimalHealth #MedicalCentre #ManageStressAndAnxiety

13.01.2022 Gastroenteritis (gastro) is a common and often highly infectious condition that affects the stomach and intestines. It is not usually serious but it can make you very dehydrated. If you have gastroenteritis, you may have: vomiting diarrhoea... nausea (feeling sick in the stomach) stomach pains fever headaches no appetite You can reduce your risk of catching or spreading gastro by washing your hands well after using the bathroom, changing nappies or handling food. The most important treatment for gastroenteritis is to drink fluids. Frequent sips are easier for young children than a large amount all at once. Keep drinking regularly even if you are vomiting. See a doctor immediately if your child cannot keep down a sip of liquid or has dehydration (dry mouth, no urine for 6 hours or more, or lethargy). Babies under 6 months should always be seen by a doctor if they have gastro. Adults and older children should seek medical advice if their symptoms include a fever, severe abdominal pain, blood in their diarrhoea or signs of dehydration, such as thirst and decreased urination, lethargy, dry mouth, sunken eyes or feeling faint when standing. #OptimalHealth #MedicalCentre #Information

10.01.2022 Are you eating too much sugar? Its time to start cutting down your sugar intake. You can cut down on sugars by eating fewer sugary foods and drinking fewer sugary drinks. Too much sugar in food or drink can make it high in kilojoules, or energy dense. This can make it harder to control your weight. It has also been linked with tooth decay. Not all sugars are the same. Sugars occur naturally in foods such as fruit and milk, but we dont need to cut down on these types of s...ugars. Across a wide range of foods, however, including sweets, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, and some soft drinks and juice drinks, sugar is added. These are the sugary foods and drinks that we should aim to reduce in our diets. #OptimalHealth #MedicalCentre #Nutrition

09.01.2022 Hand hygiene is crucial in reducing transmission of infections. It includes both hand washing with plain or antimicrobial soap and water, and use of alcohol-based products (gels, rinses, foams) containing an emollient that do not require the use of water. Heres an infographic on how to wash and dry your hands properly. #OptimalHealth #MedicalCentre #HealthInformation #HandHygiene

08.01.2022 GP APPOINTMENTS: Public service announcement. New legislation announced today and in effect from tomorrow. Please be advised that from tomorrow (Monday 30 March 2020) EVERYONE is entitled to telephone based consultations with their GP. ... This is to avoid unnecessary crowds of people waiting in surgeries and eliminate spreading of coronavirus. GP care plans and mental health plans, scripts and referrals can be done over the telephone and sent to pharmacies and pathology companies, specialists and the like. Telephone advice can be given for simple problems and questions. Some people will still need to present to the doctor for immunisations, for a physical examination, for wound reviews etc, however much of the history taking and information can be gathered beforehand to avoid you spending more time in the surgery. Hopefully this will mean less people in surgeries and less risk of spread of covid-19 to patients and doctors alike. Each GP practice will operate differently as to how they book these appointments so please speak to your GP reception staff. Please consider a telephone consultation in the first instance from the comfort of your home! Please stay safe.

08.01.2022 Are you eating plenty of fruits and vegetables? Fruits and vegetables should be an important part of your daily diet. They are naturally good and contain vitamins and minerals that can help to keep you healthy. They can also help protect against some diseases. You will get the most health benefits and protection against disease if you eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Australian dietary guidelines recommend t...hat adults eat at least five kinds of vegetable and two kinds of fruit every day. Foods of similar colours generally contain similar protective compounds. 07.01.2022 The New Year is traditionally a time for making good resolutions. While many of these fall by the wayside, often before the end of January, this is a good time to think about changes we might make in our lives that will benefit our health. These resolution ideas might be common but these will make a big impact to your health and well-being. To enjoy life more.... To eat a healthy diet. To get more sleep. To exercise and move more. To reduce alcohol intake. To quit smoking. Sticking to your new years resolutions isnt easy. To help you achieve your resolutions, you can take baby steps, be realistic, break down the big, daunting tasks into more manageable ones and try to limit the number of resolutions you set for yourself. #OptimalHealth #MedicalCentre #GregoryHills #2020 #Resolutions

04.01.2022 ? As of 28 January 2020, there are four confirmed cases for 2019-nCoV in NSW. Keep up to date with number of cases at: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/news/Pages/default.aspx... - ? Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe lung diseases. A novel coronavirus (CoV) is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. As of 21 January 2020, more than 570 cases of a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) have been reported which originated in China, in December 2019. The novel coronavirus is closely related to SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) coronavirus and in the same family as MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) coronavirus. 17 deaths have been reported. ? The most common symptoms are: fever. runny nose, cough, sore throat, headache and shortness of breath. Symptoms will likely take 2 to 14 days to present. ? ? Person to person spread of the novel coronavirus occurs through contaminated droplets from a person who is sick with the illness (through coughing or sneezing) or contaminated hands. So covering of the mouth when sick and washing of hands is very important. Close contact is defined as 15 minutes face-to-face contact with a person with confirmed coronavirus in any setting, or sharing a closed space with a person with confirmed coronavirus for more than 2 hours. . ? If you have travelled overseas, (especially to Asian countries) in the past 14 days and have a fever and respiratory signs and symptoms, please call the public health unit directly on 1300 066 055 for advice on what to do. They will let you know whether to go to hospital or call the GP for an appointment. / ? Avoid close contact, when possible, with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing. Do face masks protect against the virus? Which face masks? P2 masks are likely to provide some protection against the virus, but these must be fitted and worn properly. These masks are not needed outside of the health care setting and not needed ? 03.01.2022 Taking care of a sick person at home? If you are caring for a sick family member with flu-like symptoms, there are things you should do to help stop the spread of infection.
