25.01.2022 Our three tips for an optimal running shoe: 1. A firm heel counter 2. Flexion through the big toe joint only and not through the mid-sole 3. An even balance of cushioning and support. Extra cushioning is not always good.

21.01.2022 Podiatry Pointer | Massage the arch of your foot with a spiky/tennis ball for 2-5 minutes once a day for simple arch pain relief. This is best done whilst sitting and using the weight of your leg alone. Also avoid excessive massage at the heel bone or ball of your foot. You can thank us later.

21.01.2022 Bunions | More accurately known as hallux abductovalgus, these bad boys are a source of much grief and discomfort for many people. With so much false information on the internet we thought we would clarify some things. 1. Bunion splints that claim to reverse bunions are not proven in the literature. So be wary of the marketing involved. 2. Surgery is always an option, but only after all conservative measures have been taken.... 3. Conservative treatment is often simple but can make a significant difference. Deflective lacing, simple taping and appropriate footwear are just some examples. 4. Orthotic therapy has a great role to play in limiting progression of bunions, especially if an underlying biomechanical issue is present exacerbating the condition. Get your yourself checked out early. 5. There is a genetic predisposition with bunion, so there's always someone in the family you can blame!

15.01.2022 Ingrown nails are not fun | Make sure you act early and get them treated. Nail surgery is a last resort and can be easily avoided with early intervention.

12.01.2022 Fun Fact: Did you know that men's feet stop growing around the age of 20 and women's feet at the young age of 14? However, women's feet sometimes change at the certain stages of life such as during and post pregnancy.

07.01.2022 Interesting article to help you select a running shoe that's fit for you http://www.aapsm.org/selectingshoes.html

07.01.2022 Morton's Neuroma | This condition involves the thickening of one (or more) of the nerves running to your toes. Consequently, the nerve is compressed and burning or sharp symptoms are experienced at the ball of the foot. Morton's neuroma may feel as if you are standing on a pebble in your shoe or on a fold in your sock. High heels, ill-fitting footwear and particular foot types often predispose to this condition. Neglecting the early signs and symptoms of Morton's neuroma can... cause the nerve to thicken further and cause more pain. Treatment often involved biomechanical adjustments at the forefoot to de-compress the nerve, footwear modifications and/or cortisone injections amongst others.

06.01.2022 Heel Fissures | Dry heels are always a problem in summer. For some people it becomes a major problem and the heels begin to crack and eventually fissure (longitudinal split at the heel) causing a lot of grief and pain. Make sure you moisturise regularly this summer and get your heels sorted before any heel fissures arise...they can be a real nuisance!

02.01.2022 Case Study | A middle aged lady presented to our clinic with a chief complaint of severe bunions, worse on the right side. Her foot morphology, history of repetitive trauma and severe bunions have limited her footwear options and mobility. Upon assessment we advised her of all her options from simple conservative taping to surgical re-alignment. The patient was very interested in the surgical approach and we have referred her to a very reliable Podiatric Surgeon three months ago. Today she presented to our rooms once more with a great success story. The left side is to follow soon. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to investigate the conservative or surgical options for your bunions.

01.01.2022 Ever wondered how orthotics can help with foot and ankle pain? This is one way. Correcting an over-pronated foot type can often reduce arch, heel and ankle pain dramatically in certain situations,

01.01.2022 From all of us at Optimal Podiatry, we wish you a happy and safe holiday season
