19.01.2022 ARE YOU NOW WORKING FROM HOME? Recently announced by the Australian Taxation Office is a remodel to a concept many taxpayers will already be familiar with; Home office running costs. Its purpose is to simplify and increase a taxpayers right to a deduction for working from home as result of the COVID-19 virus while performing genuine work duties.... The changes are directed at the set rate method which will see a rate of 80 cents per hour come into effect from the period 1 March 2020 to 30 June 2020, an increase from 52c per hour. The 80c per hour is set to cover: Electricity expenses Cleaning costs of a dedicated workspace Phone and Internet expenses Computer consumables including printing/stationery Depreciation on office equipment The ATO have temporarily removed the requirement that a taxpayer must have a dedicated work area to be eligible to claim the 80c per hour and that multiple people in the same residence can individually claim the 80c per hour deduction. The only recording requirement is that the taxpayer must keep a record of the number of hours worked during the period 1 March 2020 to 30 June 2020 and can include time sheets, notes, rosters or diary entries. Prior to 1 March 2020 any home office running costs incurred will still need to be substantiated and apportioned to be an allowable deduction. Not all taxpayers stand to benefit from this newly revised rate as existing arrangements for home office running costs may outweigh the benefit in which the 80c per hour has to offer and will be determined on a case by case basis. We also look at the other economic indicators that paint a picture of the health of the economy, including consumer sentiment, movements in the Australian dollar, unemployment and wages as well as the state of the property market across all of the capital cities.

17.01.2022 The Australian Federal Government has recently announced an extension to the JobKeeper scheme which will effectively extend the scheme for a further six months until 28 March 2021. Key points to note are: The existing JobKeeper rules will continue to apply as originally introduced until 27 September 2020.... The JobKeeper Extension will apply for an additional 6 months from 28 September 2020 until 28 March 2021. The current $1,500 per fortnight JobKeeper subsidy is to be reduced to the amounts noted in the table below with effect from 28 September 2020. Under the JobKeeper Extension, the turnover tests will now be based on actual rather than projected turnover. The existing JobKeeper and JobKeeper Extension will be available to new participants if the relevant tests are met. See more info at: https://www.optimapartners.net.au/jobkeeper-update

16.01.2022 ITS A SMALL WORLD Our SMSF manager Liz Gibbs has been meeting with a client, Robert Atkins at our Osborne Park office for the last 5 years. Since merging with the Guildford Office, Liz suggested they might like to meet to discuss Roberts superfund affairs at the Guildford office being closer to his home. After further discussion Robert mentioned that his great grand aunt, Grace Brockman lived at what is now our office - Brockman House, 143 James Street, Guildford - and tha...t he had always wanted to have a look around the home. Today they met at Brockman House! Its wonderful to think that Roberts ancestors stood in the very place he did. A little history - Grace & Frederick Brockman moved to their home in about 1876. Frederick Brockman was the son of Swan Valley pioneer William Brockman. Grace Bussell was historically known for her heroic involvement with the rescue of ship wrecked passengers aboard the Georgette. Grace and her servant, Sam Isaacs, rode backwards and forwards through the surf bringing passengers from the wreck. Grace was later awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society. Frederick Brockman heard of her bravery and rode 170 miles to Margaret River, where he fell in love with her . They were later to have seven children.

15.01.2022 COVID RESTRICTIONS - From Monday 1st Feb to Friday 5th Feb 2020 our office will be closed but we ARE working remotely! We are still here to assist so give us a call or email!

14.01.2022 JUST ANNOUNCED: Weve frozen WA household fees and charges. In the State Budget, household fees and charges were set to go up by, on average, $127 per household... from 1 July this year. This decision means that wont happen - and West Aussies wont have to pay more for power, water, public transport, vehicle charges and the emergency services levy in 2020-21 than they do now. It also means there is more relief available for those who need assistance to pay their bills. Its part of our $607 million stimulus package to provide immediate additional relief for WA households, seniors and small businesses. The package includes a freeze on household fees and charges until at least 1 July 2021, a doubling of the Energy Assistance Payment to $600 and a number of measures to support small business. We are in uncharted territory and theres no doubt our economy is going to feel the effects of COVID-19. We had been examining ways to provide relief to households as part of the upcoming State Budget but, due to the ongoing concerns around COVID-19, we have opted to announce the freeze now, to give families some certainty going forward. I urge Western Australians to continue to support local businesses, and each other, as we continue to manage the impacts of the virus.

13.01.2022 Great to be supporting local footy. Looking forward to seeing the kids back on the track next week.

09.01.2022 Your financial well-being and plans for the future can be impacted by various economic events, so below is a video to assist you to stay up to date with the latest indicators. September was a month of continuing uncertainty for global markets. The ongoing US-China trade dispute, the looming Brexit deadline and a drone strike on a Saudi Arabian oil processing plant all weighed on financial markets. Despite the uncertainty US shares were up around 3% for the month, with Austral...ian shares also recording gains of close to 2%. The RBA cut interest rates to a new record low of 0.75%. The decision was undertaken to support employment and income growth and to provide greater confidence that inflation will be consistent with the medium-term target. We also look at the other economic indicators that paint a picture of the health of the economy, including consumer sentiment, movements in the Australian dollar, unemployment and wages as well as the state of the property market across all of the capital cities.

06.01.2022 Phil Carulli gives a summary of yesterdays announcement from the Prime Ministers for Commercial Landlords and Tenants. How does the code work? The code will be mandatory, and includes the following set of principles: ... - Landlords must not terminate the lease or draw on tenant security; - Tenants must honour the lease; - Landlords will be required to reduce rent proportionate to the trading reduction in the tenants business over the course of the pandemic, through a combination of waivers of rent and deferrals of rent; - Waivers of rent must account for at least 50% of the reduction in the rental provided to the tenant during that period; and - Deferrals must be covered over the balance of the lease term, and in no less period than 12 months. Please carefully consider how you will structure the rent relief package and legally document it. Both parties will need to work together and have open and frank discussions with the underlying principle being that everyone shares some of the pain. The moratorium on evictions for a period of six months still applies. Hopefully this provides some clarity to move forward.
