19.01.2022 CHILDREN WITH LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES AND THEIR PEERS. When listening to spoken sentences, children must immediately make sense of sounds that disappear as soon as they are spoken. Typically developing children rely primarily on complex working memory* for sentence comprehension and can easily and automatically ‘chunk’ information for fast processing (*the complex working memory is fed into by relationships with pattern recognition, controlled attention, and long-term memory la...nguage knowledge). However, children with Language Difficulties have a poorer complex working memory, making sentence understanding into an effortful process. They have greater difficulties with pattern recognition abilities as well as long-term memory language knowledge. This directs them to rely on a word-by-word comprehension strategy, which does little good. 18.01.2022 THERE ARE SIX STAGES OF PLAY: 1. Unoccupied play (0 12 months) The random movements that infants make with no clear purpose is the beginning of play; 2. Solitary play (0-2 years) When children start to play on their own;... 3. Onlooker play (18 months 2 years) When children watch others play; 4. Parallel Play (2 3 years) When a child starts to play side-by-side with other children without any interaction; 5. Associative Play (3 4 years) When children start asking questions of each other; 6. Social Play (4 5+ year) When children begin to share ideas and toys, and also establish rules and guidelines. The late Dr Karyn Purvis, Director of Texas Christian Universitys Child Development Centre has stated: Scientist have recently determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions. This is a great statement to further support the importance of play to learn a new skill in a fun and engaging way. OPTIMAL SENSORY INPUT An Occupational Therapist is able to assist a child with play by modifying toys or the environment to provide optimal sensory input to the child. An Occupational Therapist is able to also recommend age-appropriate toys to encourage learning and assist with play strategies to promote a child engaging in a healthy lifestyle and relationships with their parents, siblings, friends and other members of the community. 01.01.2022 ROTATOR CUFF INJURY The rotator cuff is a group of 4 tendons (attached to 4 muscles) that supports the shoulder joint. Imagine that the shoulder joint is a ball on a tee, except the tee moves up and down with the ball too. Together, the rotator cuff provide stability to ensure the ball does not fall off the tee when you move your shoulder up and down. Most of the time, the rotator cuff is injured through overuse from repetitive stress and micro-trauma like a worn-out rope. Th...is either causes the tendons to tear or cause a partial injury which makes them more vulnerable to tears In other times, it could be from a severe traumatic injury such as falling on an outstretched arm, sudden force when pushing or pulling or a shoulder dislocation. In most cases, they occur through either only overuse or overuse AND a traumatic mechanism. The tear can affect just one or multiple tendons and can be full or partial tears. Age-related changes, inflammatory or autoimmune health conditions, or smoking can also reduce the strength of the tendons which places you at a higher risk of having a rotator cuff tear.
