20.01.2022 Optimum Equine turns #1! One whole crazy year since launching Optimum Equine! So many kms travelled covering regional areas, lots of amazing regular local clients, hours spent studying and reading dissertations, days spent with the amazing Carly Hannaford, seeing horse after horse gaining an incredible amount of knowledge. Cant thank those people enough who have supported me, whether its been booking in your horse or spreading the good word or simply liking my page -you gu...ys are the best! Heres to the next 12 months

18.01.2022 North/Barossa Clients, I need a 3rd horse to add to my Case Study for my NKT Certification. Ideally the horse needs to have a physical and noticeable issue. For example one of my existing studies presents with an undiagnosed (veterinary investigated) lameness. But I am also interested in a horse with asymmetrical atrophy, history of specific muscular pain etc. Any unresolved ‘issues’ if you will You need to be available 1-2 hours every second weekend, plus willing and able... to do 5-10 minutes of simple exercises with your horse 2-3 times a day for 4-6 weeks. There is no charge to you! The closer to Gawler the better, but willing to travel. NKT is not an invasive therapy. Please feel free to send me a message, happy to answer questions

18.01.2022 **Applications close 11:59pm tonight** I have already had some really amazing applications, its going to make choosing between you all quite difficult

17.01.2022 Introducing my Sponsored Rider, Lauren Roberts and Kilmallee Murphy I was asked by Lauren to work with Murphy when I first began performing equine manual therapy. Like a number of horses, he had some initial complaints, which I worked on with Laurens help in the form of ‘owner-homework’.. We now predominantly work to keep him supple with the added bonus of being able to pin point minor issues in advance before they become major problems. He is a pleasure for me to work w...ith! A word from Lauren I was lucky enough to be born into a horsey family, so was riding pretty much before I could walk! I grew up going to Pony Club, eventing and hacking, and have competed up to National level in both Eventing and Dressage. My current competition horse, Kilmallee Murphy, is a 9 year old Connemara x Warmblood who my family bred. He hasn’t always been the easiest of horses, but is really starting to grow into himself! I primarily compete in Eventing and Dressage, and although our 2020 season was very disrupted, we won 2 out of our 3 Eventing starts. My goals with Murphy for 2021 are to consolidate ourselves at EvA80 level, with the aim to have an EvA95 start at the end of the year. Murphy has a tendency to get tight over his back and through his poll, so he loves his regular treatments from Sophie to keep him nice and loose and supple and performing at his best! Shortly I will be on hunt for a 2nd Sponsored Rider, applications open soon! by Emma Woolman Photography of Lauren and Murphy at Naracoorte Horse Trials 2020

17.01.2022 Great Sunday afternoon spent at the SA launch of the Custom Saddlery range @ The Lane Vineyard! Big thanks to Kylie Agnew from CMF Saddle Fit for inviting me to do a talk on Equine Bodywork and how it can benefit your horse! I'll do a quick write up shortly on my topic of conversation, the deep and lesser known Spinalis muscle, and how its affected by ill-fitting saddles, what to look for and how I can help! Stay tuned!

17.01.2022 Home and unwinding from another whirlwind visit to Pt Augusta, Quorn and surrounds! Emphasis on the wind because all it did was blow, strongly, for the entire three days! Big thanks to all my usual bunch of regular offenders and the new faces Your owners were pretty cool too, see you all next time!

17.01.2022 Stretching 101! We are always taking on board new ways of keeping our equine friends happy and healthy, but how many of you include stretching as part of their well-being routine? Stretching keeps the muscles healthy by maintaining their strength and flexibility. That same flexibility also supports joint range of motion and enhances the sensory nerve endings in the muscles tendons, ligaments and joints.... Stretching can influence the length and quality of the stride and a regular stretching routine can greatly reduce the risk of pulled muscles and tendons. Where appropriate, I try to leave clients with stretches they can continue to do at home. I notice a huge difference and positive changes in those horses whose owners follow my recommendations and regularly use stretches!

14.01.2022 A very good write up by Kirsty Swinton (Musculoskeletal Therapist) about incorrect terms used when it comes to describing Musculoskeletal issues in horses

11.01.2022 Introducing Sponsored Rider, Steph Sneddon and Ace Steph has been a long-term regional client residing in Pt Augusta SA! Ace has always been a little favourite of mine, as a barrel racer he tends to be sensitive in his pectorals and brachiocephalicus muscles. Steph does a great job of keeping up with her homework to help Ace stay supple so he can perform well in his discipline. A word from Steph ... I was lucky to be introduced to horses when I was 7 and then before long I had my very own pony, every little girls dream! I did a bit of pony club, some local ag shows and did some show jumping before finding the speed of barrel racing and Gymkhanas and changing disciplines. My current competition horse is Ace, who is a rising 14 year old, Quarterhorse gelding that was bred by a local stock contractor. He hasn’t been the easiest, and there was even a stage where I had advertised him for sale as I was absolutely petrified of him. Since then we have overcome a lot together and have had some great achievements in the 11 years together. Ace and I mainly compete in barrel racing with the occasional Gymkhana and team penning. This year, after a long holiday in 2020, we hope to get back out and run some solid runs and add to our list of great achievements! Although Ace is a little star, he has a bad habit of tightening up throughout his neck and pectoral muscles so he absolutely loves his visits from Sophie which help keep him loose and helps our performance as barrel racing is quite intense on the horses body. 08.01.2022 A great simple explanation and diagram about the balanced foot!

07.01.2022 MUSCLE ATROPHY Muscle wasting, or atrophy is generally defined as a decrease in the mass of a muscle. As a therapist, there are two types of atrophy I most commonly see in horses; physiologic and neurogenic... Physiologic (or Disuse) Atrophy is caused by not using the muscles enough, i.e.: restricted movement due to box rest, poor nourishment or difficulty moving limbs due to a neurological illness. It can be reversed with exercise and better nutrition -in other words, use it or lose it! Neurogenic Atrophy arises from an injury or disease to a nerve that connects to the muscle, i.e.: damage to a single nerve or nerve damage caused by an injury. It tends to appear more suddenly than physiologic atrophy and is more serious, but may also be reversed through exercise and/or better nutrition Atrophy causes muscle weakness and a decrease in strength, usually identified when we see a reduced range of motion or movement (i.e.: a reduced cranial swing due to hamstring atrophy) There are a few ways we can address skeletal muscle atrophy - Manual therapy to assist in releasing restricted tissues - Exercise, usually in the form of a strengthening-based program - Veterinary intervention in more complicated cases
