25.01.2022 I get a lot of people asking me about all sorts of fad diets. It's important to understand that just because Celebrity X endorses a certain fad diet, or because you see some hard bodied Adonis promoting a particular eating system on You Tube that it is an effective and / or healthy way to feed yourself. Recently several people have asked me about ketogenic type diets. These are a group of diets that advocate removing as many carbohydrates from the diet as possible because the...y believe that the best way to stimulate fat burning is by manipulating the amount of the storage hormone insulin our bodies produce when certain foods are eaten. Like most fad diets this approach myopically focuses on only one aspect of human nutrition and energy metabolism and then flogs it to death. In reality the key to a sustainable and effective eating plan is balance and moderation. Here is a link to a recent study that found ketogenic diets ineffective in the long term, and that what little progress was made in the short term was not from what proponents of these systems claim it is. 24.01.2022 My clients often ask me what their ideal heart rate is and the answer can be complicated. Like most things in fitness and nutrition the answer will be determined by several factors including, your genetics, your current health and fitness, and your goals. Here's an excellent short article that sheds some light on the mysteries of heart rates. Enjoy :-) http://www.abc.net.au//understanding-your-heart-r/10178600

Kudos to every athlete in every discipline from every part of the world for achieving the level of excellence required to compete at the Olympic Games. Whether you win gold or come last in your event you are already a champion. Don't let any shallow minded people make you think any different. http://www.abc.net.au//2016-08-19/body-shaming-wha/7751516

20.01.2022 People are always asking me what exercises I do to train my butt muscles. I often answer that it's a combination of the exercises that we learned in martial arts for improving our kicks and strengthening our stances, and more common things like squats and lunges etc. It's important to understand that any exercise that you do is really just a movement pattern through specific angles and planes of direction. Often, what differentiates one exercise that follows a particular move...ment pattern from another that follows the same movement pattern is your contraction focus. In other words, what muscles you are consciously contracting to perform the movement. Here's an article I found on glute training that explains nicely how to get great conscious contraction of your glutes with some common and not so common exercises through multiple planes of movement. There's not really anything new in here, it's really just variations of some long ignored exercises that we used to do in squillions of in "the old days"... Enjoy :-) https://www.t-nation.com/training/dispelling-the-glute-myth

15.01.2022 I often use the first two months of the year after the eating and drinking excesses of the Christmas & New Year periods to do my own 8 week body transformation challenge. This year my goal was to lose 8kg between Monday 3rd January & Saturday 29th February and it was especially important to me as its the first year since turning 50 that I have seriously applied myself to a structured fat loss program in this way. Most of my training for the last few years has been performanc...e oriented towards strength gains rather than aesthetics oriented. To do this I follow exactly the same types of training programs and eating plans I would prescribe to my personal training clients that would like to achieve this type of goal. You can see in the photos of this post the significant changes in my physique. I have lost 7.5kg with 4 days left till my target date and with most of the weight lost coming from body fat. There's a couple of clarifications that need to be noted about the photos. The "before" shot was not originally intended to be used as such. At the time I was just trying to see where I was. (physique wise) The shots were done in different locations under different lighting with a different smart phone camera. If you want these types of results and you're ready to start your own body transformation shoot me a message and we'll get to work on achieving your goals together. Come and train at our fully equipped micro personal training studio in Newtown, (check out the new cover photo of the studio at the head of this page), or I can work with you online providing you with a training program and nutrition plan. For more info and pricing head over to our website at: www.optimum.zone

04.01.2022 Hi everyone, it's been a while since I posted anything on this page but I'll be getting back into doing regular posts with interesting information on training and diet related topics over the next few weeks. For now here's an interesting article on how to reduce the caloric impact of rice in your diet. Thanks to the fierce and talented Ash Richards for the link. http://www.abc.net.au//feat/stories/2015/04/08/4211953.htm

04.01.2022 Today's post: Lockout training Lockouts are a technique of loading up an exercise through a very small range of the movement with a load much heavier than you would normally do than if you were completing the full range of movement. The end goal is to increase confidence to lift a heavier weight and of course to increase strength and/or power. A lockout set achieves this primarily by training the nervous system.... The squat lockout I'm demonstrating in the video is not intended as a leg strengthening exercise but instead for core strengthening. Many people could actually perform a heavier squat if their core strength was balanced properly against their leg strength. Basic lockout technique involves lifting the weight from the rack or safety rails and holding it for a set number of seconds in the fully extended, or "locked-out" position. You can define the number of seconds as you wish but a common starting point is around 10 seconds. It's also important to note that the term "lockout" doesn't mean that you are locking or hyperextending any of the joints involved in the movement as that can be extremely dangerous even under light loads. Under a heavy load the danger increases exponentially and could result in a severe injury. As with all advanced exercise techniques always get expert instruction from an experienced trainer before you attempt these. Anyone interested in ramping up their performance can contact me through Messenger, text, or email. Happy training! N

02.01.2022 I often get asked by clients how much protein they should be eating. The answer amount is actually different for everyone but the principles of how it should be done are the same. Here's a great little article on when and how much protein you should be getting each day. Enjoy. http://coach.nine.com.au//27/how-to-eat-protein-the-right-

02.01.2022 Many of my clients come to me early in the week and sheepishly state they had too much fat or sugar over the weekend and they have ruined their "diet". As most of you know I don't like to use the term "diet". I prefer to say "eating plan" or "lifestyle plan". That's because the term diet in this context is often misinterpreted to mean simply a restriction of food intake, instead of managing your food content and portions appropriately and relatively to your activity levels an...d goals. Anyone who has had me help them with an eating & lifestyle plan will also know that I advocate a path of moderation, not extreme eating habits or fad diet methods. For a lot of people however it's still difficult let go of the idea that they have to be extreme and completely cut out one macronutrient such as carbs or fats, and they also have to starve themselves. This is quite simply not true. Here's a great article from precisionnutrition.com on sugar with a balanced perspective from both sides of the for and against argument. This is a long article but it is well worth the read to get some clarity on some of the issues around dietary sugar intake. Hope you enjoy. If you need help managing your lifestyle plan because you aren't achieving your goals feel free to contact me and book a consultation. I'll get you back on track. https://www.precisionnutrition.com/truth-about-sugar
