15.01.2022 Should we talk about procrastination now - or leave it until tomorrow There’s plenty of time - let’s start tomorrow - and tomorrow - and tomorrow : oh good grief! there’s no time..!!! How do we let ourselves get into situations like this - sometimes over and over again..?... Having a problem with procrastination presents us with a great opportunity - an opportunity to gain control of a much broader issue of which procrastination is a relatively minor example - avoidance. Now avoidance can be a very useful strategy - avoiding traffic when crossing the road is a very good idea - but avoidance can also become a very unhelpful habit - because we avoid dealing with our challenges in the short term, but instead pile them into mountains ahead of us. Here are some options for you - which ones will you choose and how often? a) you could wait until you feel like starting a task - or you could choose to start now and generate a feeling of accomplishment, b) you could focus on the "mountain" ahead of you - or you could focus on the first step - and then on the one after that, c) you could do the "easy bits" first and put the hard parts off until later - wait that sounds familiar! d) you could try to do it all in one hit - or you could break the intimidating parts into smaller bits - then tackle one e) you could do something nice for yourself now so that you feel like starting - or you could begin the task - take even a small step towards your goal - then do something nice for yourself and reward your progress. f) if you like, you could tell yourself that you "work best under pressure" - the pressure applied by missed deadlines and other consequences - or you can apply some constructive pressure now - and relax and enjoy yourself later while those around you are tearing their metaphorical hair out - harming their immune systems - fighting with their partners - and falling in a heap. Let us know what you decide :-) Photo by Daniel Chekalov on Unsplash #performancepsychology #positivepsychology #learning #mindset #anxiety #wellbeing #performance

01.01.2022 One for the actors - for the writers How do the characters you portray on stage and screen differ from the characters you portray in other parts of your lives? We’re assuming that there are differences in the characters you present to others when you’re meeting with your kids’ teachers, when you’re up before a judge or in a job interview, on a first date, having breakfast with your partner of forty years, or visiting your parents.... Underneath all of these, is there a ‘real’ you? - and how do you understand what it is that causes that ‘real’ you to be as it is? Some understanding of this question is a great asset in creating characters - other personalities - in your artistic endeavours. Whether you’re writing and creating a character from scratch, or presenting a character in performance. Sometimes questions like this lead to very poetic responses. This is just who I am (be sure to hit that am to make it sound loaded with meaning and significance). I’ve a soft heart, but I’m gutsy My natal moon is in Cancer Taking a scientific approach still presents many levels of explanation that we can draw on: genetic biological neuro-structural neuro-chemical endocrine cognitive behavioural The levels of explanation on which we focus depend upon the question we’re asking, the answer we seek, the problem to be solved #performancepsychology #sportspsychology #socialpsychology #positivepsychology #learning #wellbeing #performance #acting #writing
