25.01.2022 LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE THROUGH THIS FREE MEDICINE We know that blood pressure is a vital and easy measure of our general health, however, do we know what it actually is? Blood pressure basically means the amount of pressure on the heart and arterial walls in the body with normal readings at 120/80. If either of these numbers is high, it could be an indicator of abnormalities such as narrowing of artery walls, stiffening of arteries, irregular heartbeat, higher volumes of b...lood, and strength and size of heartbeats; this equals high blood pressure aka hypertension. These abnormalities can be heavily influenced by a lack of exercise in one’s lifestyle as it impacts the function of arteries and the heart. Arteries lose their flexibility and ultimately become less pliable which leads to poor cardiovascular conditioning. FIND OUT HOW EXERCISE CAN HELP: www.opt.net.au/lower-blood-pressure-free-medicine/

19.01.2022 ROTATOR CUFF INJURY The rotator cuff is a group of 4 tendons (attached to 4 muscles) that supports the shoulder joint. Imagine that the shoulder joint is a ball on a tee, except the tee moves up and down with the ball too. Together, the rotator cuff provide stability to ensure the ball does not fall off the tee when you move your shoulder up and down. Most of the time, the rotator cuff is injured through overuse from repetitive stress and micro-trauma like a worn-out rope. Th...is either causes the tendons to tear or cause a partial injury which makes them more vulnerable to tears In other times, it could be from a severe traumatic injury such as falling on an outstretched arm, sudden force when pushing or pulling or a shoulder dislocation. In most cases, they occur through either only overuse or overuse AND a traumatic mechanism. The tear can affect just one or multiple tendons and can be full or partial tears. Age-related changes, inflammatory or autoimmune health conditions, or smoking can also reduce the strength of the tendons which places you at a higher risk of having a rotator cuff tear. 18.01.2022 You may have heard that play is an important aspect of childhood. However, did you know that play is a tool that greatly influences a child’s life and how they make sense of the world? A child’s goals during childhood are focused around growing, learning and playing. It is through a child’s participation in play that they learn to make sense of the world around them. It is their job during these critical stages of life to develop physical coordination, emotional maturity and social skills to interact with other children. They also learn to develop self-confidence, try new experiences and explore new environments. See The Six Stage of Play: www.opt.net.au/six-stages-play/

14.01.2022 THE WHO LAS’ is a common problem and occur at a rate of one injury per 10,000 people a day. It makes up a quarter of all sports injuries. The highest incidence of LAS was found in aero ball, basketball, volleyball, field sports and climbing (reference), soccer/football.... There is a greater chance of sustaining a LAS If you have; Limited dorsiflexion range of movement (bringing your toes/foot up towards your shin) Reduced proprioception (reduced ability to know where your body is in space, in your ankle) Reduced strength in the foot/ankle muscles Reduced coordination Reduced cardiorespiratory endurance Decreased reaction time of peroneal muscles (muscles responsible for stabilising your ankle) THE HOW A LAS is caused by the ankle rolling in whilst the foot pointing downwards. In this position the ligament on the outside of the ankle (strips of supportive bands that hold the ankle joint together) are placed on a stretch, therefore causing them to sprain or potentially tear The severity of ankle sprains is divided into three grades. Grade I mild stretching of the ligament without joint instability Grade II partial rupture (tear) of the ligament with mild joint instability Grade III complete rupture of the ligament with joint instability READ THE REST: www.opt.net.au/the-who-what-how-on-lateral-ankle-sprains/

13.01.2022 WHAT ROLE CAN EXERCISE PLAY? As for exercise physiologists, we understand the research to show strong evidence suggesting exercise can help reduce the risk and prevent some cancers. Extensive research has been completed for a variety of cancers particularly breast, colorectal, lung and prostate cancers with a sedentary lifestyle the biggest link to the development of these cancers. Due to the prevalence of these cancers, we as exercise physiologists encourage completing 30-60... minutes of exercise at least 5 days a week to reduce the risk of these cancers. 11.01.2022 WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A ROTATOR CUFF TEAR? Patients with rotator cuff tears often have problems doing overhead activities such as lifting the arm up beyond 90 degrees. They may feel sharp pain with or without a feeling like a shoulder is going to give way. The pain can be localized around the shoulder joint, usually at the very top or the front and, less commonly around the back of the joint.... 10.01.2022 CHILDREN WITH LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES AND THEIR PEERS. When listening to spoken sentences, children must immediately make sense of sounds that disappear as soon as they are spoken. Typically developing children rely primarily on complex working memory* for sentence comprehension and can easily and automatically ‘chunk’ information for fast processing (*the complex working memory is fed into by relationships with pattern recognition, controlled attention, and long-term memory la...nguage knowledge). However, children with Language Difficulties have a poorer complex working memory, making sentence understanding into an effortful process. They have greater difficulties with pattern recognition abilities as well as long-term memory language knowledge. This directs them to rely on a word-by-word comprehension strategy, which does little good.
