24.01.2022 Womens Health Week: Female Athletes and Leaking. Yes it happens, no you dont have to have had a baby for this to occur and yes its normal. Check out this helpful post from @physiowithcierra to learn more! Are you a female athlete? Do you ever experience leaking? Well dont worry youre not alone! Leaking has historically been associated with body changes through pregnancy and child birth, but with womens sport continually becoming more popular, the level... of competition increasing each year and the increased participation at such a young age its actually very common for female athletes to have some leaking especially during high impact activities. Leaking is typically a result of stress urinary incontinence where the increase in pressure on the pelvic floor causes some leaking of wee. Even for a relatively low impact sport like swimming 15% of women still experience this type of incontinence. If you experience anything like this or would like to know more about it, book an appointment with Dawn, Cierra or Kath! #womenshealth #womenshealthweek #physiotherapy #sportsphysio #richmond3121 #richmond #bridgeroad

18.01.2022 WRONG Often when our physios tell a male client that clinical pilates would really benefit their.....back pain, sports injury, rehab after surgery or injury prevention program, the standard response is isnt pilates for girls? We are here to tell you pilates is for everyone! It doesnt matter if you are a AFL player, a weight lifter or training for a triathlon OR recovering from surgery, have chronic back pain or suffer from tight calves. Pilates can build strength..., reduce pain and improve your performance! We hear you ask how with suspicion in your voice.... Pilates can do the following Improve flexibility! Most guys focus on building muscle mass, pilates helps you prevent injuries and muscle sprains by stretching out those muscles and increasing your range of motion. Develop neglected muscle groups! A big part of pilates is focusing on the muscle groups that you dont hit during day to day activities, movement or during lifting! Teaches your brain to control your muscles better! This might sound funny but bigger/stronger clients are commonly the ones who are less in tune with how their muscles activate and move! Builds Core Strength! We know you all know about the importance of core strength, pilates will get those Abs burning!

17.01.2022 For episode 3 of KPs WFH niggles we look at Chest Tightness! Not to be confused with chest pain (seek out your GP if you are concerned about chest pain). Chest muscle tightness is probably a result of the way you sit, especially for prolonged periods of time. Over time your muscles will shorten, causing your shoulders to pull forward and result in poor posture. Break up your day by incorporating these exercises which will stretch and help build strength - taking away that tightness and also helping to improve your posture!

16.01.2022 KP discusses why we saw so many back injuries during COVID

16.01.2022 As promised yesterday, here is KPs first exercises for common WFH niggles Has lockdown 2.0 got you sitting more? Are you starting to feel your hip flexors tighten up? Thats because excessive sitting causes the muscles to tighten and switch off. They can become progressively weaker and shorter, sometimes contributing to painful conditions, and changes to the actual muscles may take a while to reverse, including adaptive shortening (the muscles shortening due to prolonged positioning) and weakness! Check out KPs top exercises for keeping those hip muscles activated!

07.01.2022 We are so excited to announce the first in a series of health webinars for our local community Starting on Tuesday 6th October at 6pm, Dr Tom Dickson from Richmond Medical and Senior Physio Cam Steptoe will discuss Mens Health with a focus on Mental Health and Exercise & Rehab. The effects of COVID on mental health have been widely reported during lockdown, so we asked ourselves ‘what stops an Aussie bloke from going to see a doctor regarding how he is feeling/his ment...al health?’ It’s our aim to help lower the barriers by providing the what, why, how, where and who our local guys can go to, to seek advice, if or when they need it AND ask any other health, fitness or rehab questions they may have. Exercise and mental health go hand in hand, but what if there is an injury in the equation? We know that if there is pain, exercise is the last thing we want to be doing so Cam is here to guide us on what to do if it hurts. Tailored exercise plans with a focus on rehab is what Optimus does best! Make sure everyone tunes in when we go live on facebook via Zoom on Tuesday at 6pm. Send us any questions by DM, comment below or email through to [email protected]

07.01.2022 We often get asked what exercises can I do if I am in a moon boot? It is really important that you keep both your affected and unaffected limb strong while you recover from your injury! 07.01.2022 Why should you be counting out aloud during hopping after #aclreconstruction? See our insta takeover from @bryanphysio in stories for detail: In summary - let your imagination play a part in training the correct movement patterns!... When you play sport, your focus and attention is NOT on controlling your knee. A lot of #aclrehab programs train controlled hopping (which is still important), but skip straight to RTT (return to train) WITHOUT training distracted hopping / running/ jumping/ landing Triple hop tests are not enough! This is the most commonly missed part of acl rehab in months 5-9 #acl #aclrecovery #aclrehab #aclsurgery #acltear #aclinjury #mclrehab #mclrehabilitation #meniscustear #meniscusrehab #meniscusrepair

04.01.2022 Squat Stance Squatting is a fundamental movement in most fitness programs, but also in our day to day lives. If we can properly assess and correct a squat stance, it becomes an essential exercise that will make life much easier If you haven’t ever performed a squat before. It's important to know what stance you should set up with before completing a rep.... There are many factors we look at, but one of the main ones is our hip-width. Are your hips wider? Then your stance is usually similar. Are your hips narrow? Then your stance will be narrow. But there are also many other contributing factors in how your squat stance is set up. Why is this important? If you squat incorrectly, niggles may start to become a problem. This may be due to knee valgus (collapsing knee), poor ankle mobility or pelvic instability. If these aren’t assessed, it can lead to further joint problems - hence why getting the basics right is so important! Here is @coach_drumm taking you through two of the most common stances.

04.01.2022 Stage 4 restrictions have moved a lot more people to the home office...although its great being able to stay in your PJs all day, we are seeing more and more people coming in with pain and niggles that are caused by their WFH desk set up and generally being more sedentary This week KP will be providing you all with a daily post with the most common pain & conditions that WFH can cause along with some exercises and movements that can help with the pain. Her...e is KP with an overview of whats coming up this week! Make sure you stay tuned for tomorrows first top tip - keeping your hips moving during Lockdown 2.0!

04.01.2022 Shoulders and Scans...One of our biggest challenges as physiotherapists is educating our clients that the results of their scans dont necessarily correlate with pain or restrictions in function. Scans can be confusing and sometimes highlight what could look like a serious issue or structural change but what you need to understand is that these changes in your shoulder joint or muscles/tendons/ligaments etc may or may not have anything to do with your symptoms or problem. ... As you get older changes, or abnormalities, seen on a scan of your shoulder, may very well be normal for your age. This has been shown to be particularly true for those who have had spinal scans - disc degeneration or facet joint arthropathy are quite normal as we get older and do not mean you cannot continue your normal level of activities! By doing less, you can sometimes increase your levels of pain, getting stuck in a cycle that is really hard to break out of! Radiologists are obligated to comment on these changes even though they may have nothing to do with your symptoms. This is why it is so important to see a physiotherapist after getting a scan. We can help translate your scan results into normal language, working out what the results mean for YOU and YOUR issue, and guide you with appropriate exercises to get you on the mend!

"Find Your 30 is all about finding practical ways in which anyone can work half an hour of activity into ...their day, whether you are at home, the office or in need of new ideas to get the kiddos active! Exercise can benefit your brain, heart, lung, bone and mental health not to mention the social elements many exercises can include! Lacking inspiration while at stuck at home? Remember to follow the local COVID-19 restrictions for your area and have some fun while you get moving!
