04.01.2022 Optometry practices should consider sticking to tap and go for payment and ensure scrupulous cleaning of glass and stainless steel surfaces after CSIRO research found that SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, can survive for up to 28 days on common surfaces including banknotes, glass such as that found on mobile phone screens - and stainless steel. The research found that SARS-CoV-2 survived longer at lower temperatures, tended to survive longer on non-porous or smooth surfaces such as glass, stainless steel and vinyl, compared to porous complex surfaces such as cotton and survived longer on paper banknotes than plastic banknotes.
04.01.2022 [ COVID-19 update - NSW members please check your email] We have been informed by the NSW Chief Allied Health Officer that all NSW local health districts and specialty health networks have been moved back to 'Amber' risk level. This advice means that all state government employed health workers are required to wear a surgical mask if they are within 1.5m of patients, AND that patients should also wear a mask where possible. This advice applies to hospital and community healt...h settings. Whilst this advice from NSW Health is not a legally enforceable directive for private health practitioners in the community ( such as optometrists working in private practices ), Optometry Australia recommends that in geographic areas with community transmission all optometrists and practice staff should wear a surgical mask if they are within 1.5m of patients, and ask patients to wear a mask also. The NSW Government regularly updates case locations online. For further detail please read the email you should have received around 2pm AEDT today. Optometry Australia and Optometry NSW / ACT will continue to monitor the situation and update NSW members as required. For further assistance, please email Optometry NSW / ACT on [email protected] or Optometry Australia national office [email protected]
