21.01.2022 You get plenty of bad-news stories on the TV each night... so here is one that may restore some faith in humanity. Last night I got a call at 3am from our security company. That is never a good sign. And sure enough, they werent calling to thank us for 10 years of continued custom... they were calling to say our Optus store had been broken into. Now, this has happened before. In fact, normally it happens about once a year. Its been about 15 months, so I guess we were due.... I stumbled out of bed, got dressed and headed down to the store. Normally what happens next is the same old story... we find a smashed in window and a messy shop, the floor littered with broken glass and the tears of the burglars who escaped empty handed due to our impenetrable safes (that we acquired from a bank about 20 years ago when people knew how to make strong stuff). There is also usually a blood trail from their ears because our alarm system is as noisy as it is reliable. But today was different. Oh so different. I arrived to find a flock of police cars and three big dudes being taken into custody. That NEVER happens. Not in the last 20 years of break-ins has that happened. How did they catch them so fast? Normally the bad guys have done the runner long before the cops get there. Well, it turns out that Wollongong is a town where people still look out for each other. Across the road is an old-school workshop called Eckersley Radiators. Its named after Simon Eckersley, local radiator guy turned local hero. Simon had come into work early today because he is such an awesome radiator fixer that he has more customers than he has time... so he was in his shop at 3am. He heard some strange noises coming from across the street. Instead of being a selfish muppet and figuring it was someone elses problem, he came out of his shop, climbed the drive way and poked his head over the fence... where he saw our store being broken into. He calls the cops, the cops come fast, the bad guys get caught and none of our stuff gets stolen. So... cheers to you Simon. Thanks for seeing a problem that wasnt yours and making it your problem. Thanks for being a great neighbour. May your day be filled with joy. May you enjoy the beer we bought you as a small token of our appreciation. And may customers with broken radiators queue up for miles to get their radiator fixed by the best neighbour that Wollongong has to offer. Cheers mate. Tony.
