25.01.2022 September 23 is International Day of Sign Languages! International Day of Sign Languages is a day in the International Week of the Deaf from 21 September until 27 September, to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign #language users. The UN General Assembly has declared the 23rd of September as International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise #awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realisati...on of the #human rights of people who are deaf. According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are approximately 72 million deaf people #worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages. #Signlanguages are fully developed natural languages that are different in structure compared to spoken languages. There is also an international sign language which is used by deaf people in international meetings and informally when travelling and socialising. It is considered a basic form of sign language that has a limited vocabulary and is less complex than natural sign languages. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with #Disabilities recognises and promotes the use of sign languages. It makes clear that sign languages are equal in status to spoken languages and obligates states parties to facilitate the learning of sign language and promote the linguistic identity of the deaf community. 18.01.2022 Today is a special day for Orana as we celebrate our 70 year anniversary of supporting people with disability and working towards creating a more inclusive society for all. We are proud to be marking our 70th anniversary a significant milestone that few companies achieve. This landmark represents the fruits of the labours made by all our past and present staff, employees and volunteers dating back to the founding group of devoted parents. We have a long and proud history o...f supporting people with disability. From our humble beginnings where a small group of progressive and visionary parents seeking opportunities for their children with intellectual disability met at a public meeting in Adelaide in 1950, to becoming one of SAs largest and respected disability service providers, Orana has evolved and developed along with the disability sector over the past 70 years. Dedicated to our vision of a society where people with disability are equal citizens, we have played an active role in improving awareness and progressing the nature of disability support in Australia. On our journey through the evolution of disability support, we shifted our focus from caring for people to supporting people by providing them with the skills to become more independent as individuals and as members of our community. Now our goal is clear, to empower people to live the life they choose. We look forward to continuing on our journey, driven by the vision of a society where people with disability are a part of our mainstream society. To all staff, volunteers and customers, thank you for your continued commitment to Orana and the vital support you provide to our clients and employees. Heres to another 70 years! Kind regards, Nicholas Mihalaras Chief Executive Officer Orana Australia Limited

06.01.2022 From stutter to stand-up comedy and the long journey of self-acceptance in between Vikesh Anand is the head of the Australian Speak Easy Association, the peak body supporting people who stutter. Vikesh didn’t let having a stutter hold him back from getting into stand-up comedy! Since starting to dabble in amateur stand-up last year, a lot of people told him that they could never do that. For Vikesh, he says that stand-up brings him out of his comfort zone and gives him conf...idence. "I have a stutter it's just the way I'm wired. It also means that you're gonna be here for a while." Vikesh grew up thinking of himself as a shy kid but after some time, realised that he was quiet out of a fear of his stutter and judgement. He says, "Society still has these misperceptions that people who stutter are less intelligent, people who stutter must be nervous or lying. All of those misperceptions fed into the fear." A turning point for Vikesh was the first time he met others with his experience with stuttering while attending a self-help meeting. Read the full story here: https://ab.co/35mXKdS
