25.01.2022 Countdown to "Snake Season" Depending on the weather, I will normally begin getting calls about snakes early in September. I am a proponent of people in "snake...y" areas learning to live alongside the native wildlife. Killing a snake or having me come and remove it will do nothing to reduce the number of snakes you will have on your property if you ignore the reasons they are there in the first place. Below are some things you can do in the next few weeks to help reduce snake activity around your homes come spring and summer. You won't be able to stop snakes from moving through your property but if they do turn up you can take steps to make it less to their liking so they are motivated to keep moving and not stay around. 1) Don’t give snakes a place to hide. Remove all loose ground cover. All rubbish, logs, wood, sheets of tin and rocks have to go and if you have a rock garden seal up as many gaps and holes under the rocks as you can. 2) Check for holes and gaps going underneath concrete slabs and fill these in. Snakes won’t dig holes themselves so any gaps appearing or made by other animals will be used by snakes for shelter. 3) Remove overgrown vegetation that sits on the ground. Ground level vegetation gives snakes areas to bask without having to expose themselves completely so they love it. Instead, plant shrubs that grow up off the ground or prune your plants so that there is a gap between the ground and the first branches. While any snakes can climb, it is unusual for the ones in our area to do so. 4) Rock retaining walls with overgrown vegetation and a pool or pond nearby is 4 star snake heaven, particularly if they are north facing. Cut back overgrown shrubs and fill in holes and gaps in the rocks. 5) Keep your grass short. Pay particular attention to grass and weeds along fence lines and the walls to your home or sheds. This is what snakes will often use to travel along undetected. 6) Install weather strips/seals under all doors. A snake only needs a gap about 1/3 of its thickness to squeeze through and the scent trail of a mouse that has been in your home can still be detected by a snake for months later and can lead them into your homes. Also when the weather becomes very hot, snakes may come into homes looking for somewhere to escape the heat. 7) No bird seed, compost, chook feed or any other rodent attractants to be left out. Keep it in air tight bins. Anything that attracts rodents and you are basically setting up a McDonalds drive through for hungry Eastern Brown Snakes to come and hang around. If you see a snake around the yard the best advice I can give you is to stand back and watch it and eventually it will move on. If you can detach yourself from the disproportionate sense of fear we feel towards snakes, they really are pretty fascinating animals to watch. If you live in town or have pets or young children then I certainly understand a person's reluctance to have a snake around and so in this case you should have the snake relocated by someone experienced in handling venomous snakes. Be sure to watch it from a distance until the snake catcher can arrive. Photo: Highland Copperhead, Gosling Creek Reserve.

06.01.2022 What a brilliant feed bin idea!!! No scrapping around and wasted feed on the floor and the feed would be kept dry in the rain (Ps not my photo) **this was pos...ted originally in 2016 and is gaining a lot of attention again(2020). I never got around to making one but with winter on its way here in Australia and possibly some spare time on our hands in isolation, who knows I may actually make one. If anyone has made one or found instructions to make this please add to this post or the community posts on this page. Stay safe everyone xxx See more
