20.01.2022 The Ekka Silhouettes by S John Ross There would be a few of these tucked away in Brisbane homes I am thinking.... S John Ross known as The Silhouette Man was a regular at the Ekka and could be found just inside the main entrance to the showbag pavilion. American born and famous for his silhouette portraits he first visited Brisbane in 1942 as a US Serviceman. He married Australian WAAF Phyllis Counsell in 1945. Moving permanently to Australia in 1950 he became well known making appearances at numerous shows including the Sydney Royal Easter Show and Brisbanes Ekka. S John Ross received numerous Show Leglend awards and was held in high regard by the Australian Show Society. He was also fondly known as 'Scissors John's S John Ross passed away on August 24th. 2008 aged 89 years. His last appearance at the Ekka was in 2007. Trivia Note: Mr Ross maintained throughout his some sixty year career that the only people who knew what the S in his name stood for were those at the Australian Tax Office. It was Sebastian.
