18.01.2022 Thank you for looking after us: Melbourne's tribute to unsung heroes Emotional tributes to health workers around the world toiling on the front lines of the battle against coronavirus have included people singing from their balconies and entire cities of people applauding. A tribute with a difference has popped up in Melbourne in the form of a giant photo essay to recognise our frontline medics.... The portraits on a hoarding in Parkville, the city's hospital precinct, pay tribute to health workers including Professor David Story, who is pictured in his blue scrubs, with a stethoscope draped around his neck. Professor Story, deputy director of the Centre for Integrated Critical Care at the University of Melbourne and staff anaesthetist at Austin Health, is thrilled to be among those depicted, and to see the collective effort recognised, in what has been an especially gruelling year. Coronavirus, among its many quirks, had flipped the usual psychology of healthcare, he said. Health practitioners traditionally worried about being a threat to patients, especially in the operating theatre, but that had changed with this disease. Suddenly the patients were potentially a threat to us. Professor Story is quick to point out the threat is, of course, COVID-19, not the patient: "It’s almost like they’ve got an alien in them." Recent analysis by Amnesty International found that at least 7000 health workers have died around the world after contracting the disease. In Victoria, almost 3500 health workers have contracted the virus so far. Professor Story said the photo essay was a lovely recognition of healthcare workers, who had faced uncertainty, anxiety and dramatic change during the pandemic, taking on major physical and emotional challenges and consequences, he said. 09.01.2022 Working Together To Re-Open Victoria Safely The Victorian Government will release its reopening roadmap this Sunday, 6 September, providing certainty and clarity to communities and businesses alike. Ahead of this release, the Government will commence an intensive, and extensive, round of discussions with industry, unions and community organisations to inform the final development of Victoria’s roadmap to ‘COVID Normal’.... This consultation will be based around six principles for industry on a COVIDSafe re-opening, based on the best advice from our public health experts and imperative to keeping our community safe. We need the voices of industry to inform how this re-opening can happen practically, safely and steadily. This will be vital to planning what a ‘COVID Normal’ will look like, industry by industry. Many of the key principles are things Victorian businesses and workplaces continue to practice every day: ensuring physical distancing, including following density requirements, making sure staff work from home wherever possible, limiting the total number of staff and customers in an enclosed area, and stopping carpooling wearing a face covering at all times in the workplace and ensuring full PPE is worn in high-risk settings requiring hygienic workplaces, with high-touch points regularly cleaned, staff regularly washing their hands, and hand sanitisers available for all staff and customers continuing to act quickly if staff become unwell by having a strict policy that supports them to stay home and get tested, even if they have mild symptoms. All places of work need to have a plan to act immediately if there is a confirmed case and records must be kept of all staff, customers and visitors. 05.01.2022 The Victorian Government has established an $80 million rental assistance fund to provide rent relief payments of up to $3,000 to Victorians experiencing rental hardship due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The one off grant is specifically for tenants living in their primary residence to help them maintain safe, secure and stable accommodation. It is paid directly to the tenant’s agent, lessor or landlord to contribute to the tenant’s rental payments, under their new ...rental agreement. 01.01.2022 Trap Plan: 1Students have been contacted through a phone call from someone usually speaking in Mandarin and claiming to be a representative from a Chinese authority. 2The caller convinces the victim that they have been implicated in a crime in China, and that they must pay a fee to avoid legal action. 3 The victim is then threatened or coerced into transferring large amounts of money into unknown offshore bank accounts.... In some instances, victims are convinced to fake their own kidnappings known as a ‘virtual kidnapping’. 4When the victim’s family is unable to establish contact with their child in Australia, they send large ransom payments in exchange for their ‘release’. 5 Police have asked students who feel they may have been targeted to contact the Chinese Consulate or Embassy, and report the incident to police.
