25.01.2022 We might be far from the coast, but you can marvel at the stunning Western Australian coastline in our travelling exhibition ‘A Portrait of Australia: Stories Through the lens of Australian Geographic’. The Cape to Cape Track covers 135 kilometres from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia. Surfers like Michael Harvey, as well as fishermen, cavers, climbers and walkers, use the track to access the state’s wild south-west coast. ‘A Portrait of Australia: Storie...s Through the lens of Australian Geographic’ is a travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia developed in collaboration with Australian Geographic. 24.01.2022 This poster by Australian artist Norman Lindsay for a WWI nation-wide recruitment campaign was hugely controversial and is one of the most iconic Australian First World War posters. Lindsay’s portrayal of this German character called the Hun was also used in many cartoons produced for the Sydney Bulletin. It is a prime example of how propaganda campaigns sometimes used offensive stereotypes, crude caricature, and vilification of an enemy to incite an emotional reaction in t...he viewer and was employed as a tactic in many countries. Visit us to find out more about war propaganda and the art of poster making. 23.01.2022 We asked Ricky Ah-See from the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council, what his favourite object was in the 'Inherit' exhibition. He was pleased to see a number of items tie back to the Indigenous culture of Orange. He chose a set of boomerangs painted by school children as part of a workshop run by the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council, c.2010, which is displayed alongside two boomerangs made by Bob Tobin, c.1910. I love seeing cultures combine and that’s why this set of... boomerangs stood out to me, Ricky said. The concept of a boomerang is just extraordinary. They were used as a weapon for hunting and when they were thrown they made a noise that would distract the animals. I think it’s important for everyone to understand significant parts of the Indigenous culture such as boomerangs and the role they played. 'Inherit' is our new long-term exhibition, featuring stories and objects from across the Central West. Visit us today to learn more about the events, personalities and everyday experiences that have shaped our past and present. Orange Regional Museum is open 9am-4pm daily, and entry is free. 22.01.2022 Did you know that almost 50% of gamers are women? Maybe, but how much do you know about the integral role that women have played shaping gaming? Though they still comprise less than 10% of the industry, the contribution of women is enormous. 'Code Breakers: Women in Games' is the first Australian exhibition celebrating the achievements of women working in the games industry. Whether it’s making commercial hits or indie titles, these women know games, contributing as directors..., programmers, developers, artists, writers, producers and designers. 'Code Breakers: Women in Games' is showing at Orange Regional Museum until 14 October 2020. The exhibition is an ACMI touring exhibition supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria. 18.01.2022 Today we commemorate the signing of the Armistice that ended the First World War on 11 November 1918. . Molong local, Hugh McArdle, enlisted in the First Australian Imperial Force in September 1915 and departed Australia twelve months later for France. It was there in 1917 that he sent this silk embroidered postcard back to his family in Molong. Hugh was one of more than 400,000 Australians to serve in World War I and almost 150 from Molong and districts. He returned from the War after the cessation of fighting, arriving home in June 1919. 18.01.2022 #Onthisday The Sydney Olympic Games relay torch passed through Orange in the year 2000, which was the 87th day of the torch being in Australia. There were 2000 limited edition torches produced for the relay and this particular torch in our collection is numbered 0342. The torch traveled to various island nations as part of a tour of Oceania before beginning an extensive journey around Australia. For the first time the Flame was taken underwater, with a special flare-like torch taken on a dive down to the Great Barrier Reef. The design of the torch reflected three famed areas of Australian culture: the boomerang, the Sydney Opera House, and the waters of the Pacific Ocean. This object is in Orange Regional Museum's collection, donated by Orange City Council.

16.01.2022 Meet Angelos and Dexiopy Kalatzis. Angelos left his home in Greece in 1925 in search of a better life for himself and his young wife, Dexiopy. It would be more than ten years before they reunited, Dexiopy joining her husband in Cowra in 1936. This photograph was taken during the 1940s, when the couple ran the Royal Café in Eugowra. They became an important part of the community there, sponsoring community activities and providing refreshments for functions and events. 15.01.2022 This simple cross-stitch sampler was worked in wool by eight-year-old Catherine ‘Kitty’ Frost of ‘Campdale’, Orange, in 1872. The name ‘sampler’ comes from the Latin ‘exemplum’, or example. Samplers date back many hundreds of years and were used as part of a domestic education for young girls, teaching needlework skills used in later life to mark and mend clothing and decorate furnishings. Don’t miss Kitty’s sampler on display in our local history exhibition ‘Inherit’. It returns to the Orange & District Historical Society Inc. next week.

14.01.2022 During the First and Second World Wars posters were an ideal method of communicating propaganda because they could be printed and distributed quickly in large quantities, reaching a vast audience. Some Americans misunderstood this poster, designed by Glenn Grohe, reminding citizens to be wary of enemy spies. A public survey conducted by the Office of Facts and Figures in 1942 found that the German soldier's stylised helmet was misinterpreted by some to be the Liberty Bell, an... iconic symbol of American independence. Other factory workers thought the message of He's watching you, referred to their boss watching them, rather than German spies. In June 1942, the U.S. government created the Office of War Information (OWI) to review and approve future government war posters. Visit us at Orange Regional Museum to see more original propaganda posters from the First and Second World Wars in ‘Hearts and minds: wartime propaganda’, an Australian War Memorial touring exhibition. The Museum is open daily from 9am-4pm and entry is free. Image: Glenn Grohe. ‘He’s watching you’, 1942. Lithograph printed in colour. 08.01.2022 October is mental health month and we wanted to share one of the very personal objects on display in our local history exhibition, ‘Inherit: old and new histories’. This hand-embroidered tablecloth offers insight into mental health treatment in the region. It was made by a patient at Bloomfield Hospital in the 1950s for Sister Mary Bates, a long-serving nurse there. From its official opening in 1925, gardening, sewing, crafts, and sport were seen as an important aspect of treatment at Bloomfield Hospital. Patients were also encouraged to make use of the open-air and landscaped grounds. Orange Regional Museum is open 9 am-4 pm daily and entry is free. Image: Hand-embroidered tablecloth, early 1950s. 08.01.2022 Fun fact! #onthisday in 1860 the Municipality of Orange was proclaimed. Residents hoped the incorporation would assist in the progress of the township, with the deplorable state of its roads a pressing concern. Built in 1864, the Metropolitan Hotel on Byng Street dates form the earliest years of the Municipality. It began life as the Manchester House store and was run by John Woodward, who served as an alderman on the first Orange Municipal Council and later as Mayor. This 19th-century photograph of the Metropolitan Hotel covered in snow is in the Orange Regional Museum collection.

05.01.2022 Today we celebrate the Lunar New Year as well as the 170th anniversary of the discovery of payable gold in NSW. Though there are several claims on the discovery, it was Edward Hammond Hargraves’ widely publicised find on 12 February 1851 that spurred the gold rushes and with them a large wave of Chinese migration. The influx of Chinese labour also meant new cultural traditions like Lunar New Year and the Orange Regional Museum’s local history exhibition ‘Inherit: old and... new histories’ has some remarkable objects that relate to Chinese culture on the goldfields. This soy sauce bottle was kindly lent to the Museum by Rod Mendham of ‘Greenbrook’ Station, near Blayney. Chinese miners were known to work on the property from as early as 1866. 05.01.2022 Today is day of the programmer! To celebrate we want to introduce you to Rebecca Fernandez, an Australian games programmer currently living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. "I think this exhibition is an excellent way to give Australians a peek behind the curtain of game development, and highlight that women are playing an integral role ...within the industry. I really hope it helps to inspire girls and women to begin making their own games." - Rebecca Fernandez. 'Code Breakers: Women in Games' is the first Australian exhibition celebrating the achievements of women working in the games industry. Whether it’s making commercial hits or indie titles, these women know games, contributing as directors, programmers, developers, artists, writers, producers and designers. 04.01.2022 Introducing William and Henry Lee of Blayney, whose photograph you can see in our exhibition ‘Inherit: old and new histories’. When this photo was taken in around 1905, Henry was four years old, William was six, and they had a little brother Horace who was born around this time. All three attended Blayney Public School, and their parents, Susie and Jahun ran a shop in town. Later, William established the Leeholme Plant and Seedling Nursery in Blayney, and when he died in 1979, he bequeathed his estate for the creation of a retirement home, now the Lee Hostel. 04.01.2022 Mayor of Orange, Reg Kidd, has a favourite object in our new exhibition ‘Inherit: old and new histories’ and it is a can of ‘Mt. Canobolas Ozone’. He said The reason why this one did stand out for me is because of my aunty Janette Morgan, who was crowned Miss Cherry Blossom at the festival that was traditionally held on the October long weekend... I remember this festival as the biggest event on the Orange calendar back in its day. The whole town would celebrate by attending... the ball, the street parade and so on. It was a fantastic time of year for the people of Orange and those visiting. The can was sold as a novelty souvenir for the Orange Cherry Blossom Festival in the 1960s. ‘Inherit’ is our new long-term exhibition, featuring stories and objects from across the Central West. 03.01.2022 Hello, Dorrie! Dorothea ‘Dorrie’ Godfrey was an accomplished piano player and mezzo-soprano, but was forbidden by her mother Rose to perform at concerts. Despite this setback, Dorrie’s daughter, Thea, remembers growing up with lots of music in the house. 02.01.2022 Are you a publicly funded museum or gallery working with a bushfire affected community? Are you looking for a community engagement project that might help fill a gap in your exhibition schedule that's been disrupted by COVID-19? We've developed a free toolkit for museums and galleries to run a 'Regenerate' project in their local area. The toolkit includes guides for everything, from finding information to create a regionally specific project through to an installation guide.... 'Regenerate' is a creative exploration of how the Australian bushland responds to fire by Orange's school students. The project was developed by Orange Regional Museum, Orange Regional Gallery and the SPARKE Learning Network. Contact us or our project partner Orange Regional Gallery for more info.

02.01.2022 The Molong Football Club was formed in 1885, following rules codified at the elite Rugby school in England and well established in Sydney and regional NSW by that time. This 1903 Molong FC ‘cap of honour’ was offered by The Molong Argus as a prize for the best all-round player of the season. Awarded to Club Secretary Albert Couch, he gratefully accepted the honour, stating he had ‘always done his best for the Club and no man could do more.’ The cap, on loan from the Molong Historical Society Inc., is on display for a few more in our local history exhibition ‘Inherit’.

02.01.2022 Member for Orange, Phil Donato recently visited our local history exhibition ‘Inherit: old and new histories’ and said it’s the perfect way to learn about the history of the region. I was instantly drawn to the pair of percussion action pistols that were owned by Edward Montague Battye. It is amazing to think about what these pistols would’ve been faced with, escorting wagons from the Goldfields in the days of bushrangers. They would’ve played a really significant role in ke...eping people safe. Phil encouraged people to come down and find pieces that they connect with on a personal level, as he did. Battye’s pistols are on loan from Sydney Living Museums. Orange Regional Museum is open 9 am-4 pm daily and entry is free. Image: Phil Donato inside Orange Regional Museum's new exhibition 'Inherit'. 01.01.2022 When owner of Groundstone Café Katie Baddock was asked what she loved most about our current exhibition ‘Inherit: old and new histories’, she said she was drawn to a set of glazed ceramic jars that were used to hold ginger in the 1900s. I have a passion for ceramics and the ceramic jars instantly grabbed my attention, Ms Baddock said. It wasn’t until I read about the exhibit a little more closely and discovered that the jars used to hold ginger, so this connects with Chine...se heritage in the area. These distinctive glazed ginger jars are evidence of the many Chinese market gardens that operated throughout the region. Unearthed close to the site of a known garden in the north-west of Orange, these jars point to the tradition of Chinese cooking. ‘Inherit’ is our new long-term exhibition, featuring stories and objects from across the Central West. Orange Regional Museum is open 9am-4pm daily and entry is free. Image: Owner of Groundstone Café Katie Baddock inside Orange Regional Museum's new exhibition ‘Inherit’. Photograph by Ellie Bryce.
