24.01.2022 The holidays can be a tough time for many people - especially our friends experiencing homelessness. Orange Sky has a goal to provide 1,000 shifts these holidays so friends, like Crystal, have a place to sit down and form genuine connections with volunteers. Support our friends these holidays at https://www.orangesky.org/FB-Holidays #noholidayfromhomelessness

24.01.2022 As 2020 comes to a close, we need your help to provide 1,000 shifts over the holidays. This will ensure that Orange Sky volunteers can continue supporting our friends doing it tough with access to free laundry, warm showers and genuine conversation. Thanks to two very generous donors, your gift these holidays will be matched dollar for dollar - which means double the impact for people in need. Support our friends today with a matched gift at: https://www.orangesky.org/FB-Holidays

21.01.2022 "With Orange Sky, I think it's so true - the positive connections that people form. [Friends] don't want to be bogged down; some of them like to share their problems, but a lot of them, they just want to be happy. They want to be around happy people. They want to share a joke. And I've learned so much [as an Orange Sky volunteer]... every shift I go home and I say to my husband, 'Hey hun, do you know that just...'. Everything's a learning thing, so I think we can learn from each other, can't we?" - Mary-Anne #noholidayfromhomelessness

19.01.2022 Eddie and the team over in New Zealand were featured on The Project NZ last week! A massive shout out to our friends and volunteers across the ditch for helping to share the Orange Sky story. It was an amazing opportunity to get the word out to more Kiwis about the importance of a genuine conversation.

19.01.2022 A huge shout out to our volunteers in Adelaide for continuing to support our friends at this time. We were able to run three shifts over the weekend, and with some restrictions easing overnight, we're hoping to be back soon providing free laundry and conversation across all of our shifts.

18.01.2022 "Conversations are so important. They make you feel connected, important and worthwhile. Everyone needs to connect to others. It is in our human DNA." Maryam is hanging up her Orange Sky shirt after more than five years as a volunteer in Melbourne. Read more about her Orange Sky journey and some of the lessons she’ll take away from her time spent sitting down on orange chairs.

14.01.2022 Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann was awarded Senior Australian of the Year. She has done some incredible work across communities to advocate for education, art, culture and opportunity as a way to empower young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In her speech, she shared the concept of 'dadirri' and its meaning; deep listening and silent still awareness. "It's time for you to come closer to understand us and to understand how we live and listen to what needs are in... our communities." 14.01.2022 The 50 Words Project aims to provide fifty words in every Indigenous language of Australia. We talk so much about the power of conversation at Orange Sky, and we think it’s really special to not only have the opportunity to learn more about the way our First Nations people communicated so many years ago, but play a small part in keeping it alive for future generations. Jump onto the website and encourage others around you to connect with some of the oldest languages in the world. https://bit.ly/36jvo4G

12.01.2022 Reconciliation Australia's 2021 theme, ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action’, urges us towards braver and more impactful action. The theme provides us all with the opportunity to reflect on our own contributions towards reconciliation in Australia and strive to do more. It’s been 20 years since Reconciliation Australia was founded, and although there’s a greater understanding in the community of First Nations’ cultures and knowledges, we still have a long way to go.... More people are speaking up, speaking the truth, asking the hard questions, seeing the hard facts, and informing themselves about issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. - Reconciliation Australia. Orange Sky is committed to finding ways to support Reconciliation in Australia and taking more impactful action. #MoreThanAWord You can learn more about the theme here: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/more-than-a-word/

09.01.2022 We've loved sharing content this NAIDOC Week celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Earlier this year, Orange Sky made a commitment to do more to support our First Nations people by listening and better educating ourselves, making space for more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, and continuing to provide our free laundry service in communities. It's been five months since then, and we wanted to provide ...you with an update. Our laundry services in Palm Island, Maningrida and Lockhart River have continued to safely operate throughout 2020. This year across the three services, we've been able to support communities with more than 45,000 kilograms of laundry. At our full team meetings every Monday morning, a staff member identifies and explores a Traditional Owner group from one of our 32 services and shares what they’ve learnt. We are continuing to explore how we can more formally acknowledge Traditional Owner groups, and we plan to share more information with you in 2021. Our website has been updated and we’ve made it easier to learn more about our services in remote communities and get in touch with us to chat about growing our services. You can check it out here: orangesky.org.au/remote We are continuing to share stories and make space for more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices - not just from our laundry and shower services, but from across different communities. This remains an ongoing commitment for us at Orange Sky and we will continue to learn and explore how we can better support the First Nations people of this country. If you would like to get in touch or chat with us about anything, please send us email us at [email protected].

09.01.2022 Our laundry and shower services could not operate without the backing of some incredible partners across Australia. Thanks to support from the team at City West Water, Orange Sky is able to provide 17 shifts in Victoria for our friends doing it tough. #partnerloveandthank

09.01.2022 "Sleeping on the street outside, the hardest journey of my life. Being a female is especially scary. Night to night was different. For people who don't know what it's like, some people can be very judgmental. And everybody's journey is so different. Everybody's story is so different." - Crystal #noholidayfromhomelessness

08.01.2022 Our thoughts go out to everyone in South Australia as the state goes into day two of a six day lockdown to help curb the spread of COVID-19. Orange Sky is monitoring the situation closely, and at this stage, we are continuing to operate laundry shifts - with COVID-19 safety controls in place - as long as our service provider partners remain open. We are mindful that things continue to change, and we will make decisions in line with government advice to ensure the safety of ou...r friends, volunteers and wider community. If you are looking to access our services, you can find the most up to date information at orangesky.org.au/locations. We're thinking of all our friends at this difficult time and hope that we can continue supporting the Adelaide community with free laundry, warm showers and genuine conversation.

07.01.2022 It's been amazing to see so many new shifts pop up around the country - like this one in Chelsea, Victoria. Our teams are working incredibly hard to make sure we are out there supporting our friends doing it tough. You can help us out by signing up to become a volunteer at https://bit.ly/3pBxO7G

05.01.2022 "My name is Dani, and I'm the Fundraising Officer at Orange Sky. As part of my role, I work really closely with philanthropists and foundations to help keep our vans on the road, and our volunteers and friends connected. There's a misconception that giving is only for people who are very well off and have lots of money to spare - and that's just not true. Over the next few weeks, I wanted to share some stories of giving that I've come across since I joined Orange Sky. I've ...met people from every walk of life and I've learned that everyone has something to give." Keep an eye out tomorrow for the first story from Dani to kick off our Many Faces of Giving series this December. #manyfacesofgiving

04.01.2022 "What’s being built here by the Orange Sky team is a really different proposition to how it originally began in a garage six years ago. The maturity of a governance system has got to match the maturity of the organisation, and Orange Sky today is a different beast to Sudsy, and Nic and Lucas with two washing machines in 2014." It's been one year since Andrew Fraser joined Orange Sky as Chair of the Board. He looks back on the past 12 months, in what was the most challenging y...ear in our history, and shares a bit about the role he’s playing to ensure Orange Sky’s sustainability and long-term success. 04.01.2022 Today is World Kindness Day, which highlights the power of small gestures that can have a big impact on someone's life. At Orange Sky, kindness has always gone hand in hand with what we do; it's in every load of washing, in every shower provided and in each conversation held around our vans. In a year that's been filled with so many challenges, we continue to be blown away by the kindness of volunteers who want to support our friends with something as simple as a conversatio...n. #MakeKindnessTheNorm The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation

02.01.2022 The Western Australian Government has announced a mandatory 5-day lockdown across the Perth metropolitan area, and the Peel and South West regions. Orange Sky is an essential service, and as long as our service provider partners remain open and we have sufficient volunteers, we will continue to operate shifts across Perth. We have complete trust in our COVID-19 controls to ensure that volunteers and friends are safe, and that the likelihood of transmission on shift is signi...ficantly reduced. There are currently five shifts that have been paused this week. If you're looking to access our services, please visit our locations page for the most up to date information: https://locations.orangesky.org.au/ We’re thinking of everyone who has been impacted by this lockdown, and we hope we're able to continue supporting the community during this time.

01.01.2022 Richard has played an important role in the supporting Orange Sky's laundry service on Palm Island over the past two years. Without his leadership, guidance and dedication to community, there's no way we could have supported more than 50,000 kilograms of laundry on Palm Island. Hear a little bit from Richard below. "I'm a Traditional Owner here on Palm Island, it's my Grandfathers country. We have seen some incredibly sombre times on this island. I have a sense that if our people feel like they can take their rightful place on their country, healing will come. NAIDOC is an important time to celebrate our culture and bring others on the journey to understanding our First Nations people." #NAIDOC2020
